Red Mass assemble all-star cast for A Hopeless Noise

Montreal's Red Mass are joined by Mike Watt, King Khan, Mac DeMarco, etc for their new concept album A Hopeless Noise, in the works since at least 2014.

Here's the scoop...

"The album tells the story of the Diamond Girl. You follow her as she falls from grace and loses touch with reality. It is The Mass’ modern day retelling of Don Quixote. As the Diamond Girl develops a psychological disorder and suffers delusions of grandeur. She still believes that she is living in the utmost luxury when in reality, her world crumbles around her. Amidst her trauma, she wanders aimlessly through the city and falls prey to the most decadent of low lives. She wallows in vice as the wings of temptation carry her from one nightclub to the next. When she finally breaks she goes on a violent rampage.

"In order to mirror the Diamond Girl’s multiple personalities, the group worked in numerous punk sub genres and picked different artists to bring each song to life. Musicians from all over the world joined in, including members of The Black Lips, Duchess Says, Human Eye, Fly Pan Am & Godspeedyoublackemperor as well as Mac DeMarco, Rick Froberg (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu), John Kastner (Doughboys, Asexuals), Evan Dando, Hugo Mudie (The Sainte Catherines), producer/musician Martin Bisi, Jered Gummere (The Ponys), King Khan and Mike Watt. The Sadies issuing split 7" single with King Khan

Both aware of how "beefs" can often juice record sales, Dallas Good and King Khan are settling their differences on brown wax January 24th.

Here's the scoop...
King Khan and The Sadies are proud to announce a split 7" single, to be released digitally and on limited-edition brown vinyl on January 24 via Khannibalism / Ernest Jenning Record Co. / Sadisks. King Khan is joined by Mary Simich and Natalia Avelon on the A-side, "Old Gunga Din," while The Sadies alone are featured on "The Most Despicable Man Alive."

"I met Dallas Good when I was about 18 years old... For many years we would sneer and jeer at each other for no explainable reason... Could it have been a deep sexual tension, well of course it was, anyways those strange emotions turned rancid and volatile up until one day Jon Spencer wanted to cover a King Khan & BBQ Show song... Dallas refused to play it and his only reasoning was because 'King Khan is the most despicable man alive.'

This news travelled fast amongst our little community and this beef was thrown on the fire and doused in beautiful laughter, LSD, and a blood brotherhood that is stronger than said "rock" in "Like a Rock". I proudly exclaim my profound love for Dallas Good, he is my brother and this single is proof that Indian men are built like brick shithouses and make love like snakes."

Mark Sultan releasing live LP for Record Store Day

It wasn't that long ago that Mark "BBQ" Sultan recorded two albums worth of unusual covers backed by his pals Choyce from Red Mass, Jared and Cole fom the Black Lips, Erin from the Spits and others which In The Red issued last October as the 14-track Whatever I Want LP and the 12-track Whenever I Want LP. And our man still had material left over for a couple of singles.

Now just a few months on, Sultan is announcing a vinyl release of his live album The War On Rock 'n' Roll to coincide with the Record Store Day cash-in on April 21. Although Sultan has made The War On Rock 'n' Roll available on his site as a free digital download since October, this new limited-run vinyl version boasts artwork by Gary Panter who created the amazing LA punk scene handbills for the Screamers and the Germs. Like many RSD-related releases it's a slight repackaging of something you may already own.  

"In The Red Records has decided to release this recording on vinyl to celebrate Record Store Day and I am thrilled," says Sultan. "While you listen to this recording, keep in mind that it is one take, live, and that the sides of the LP split the recording, obviously due to vinyl's time limitations upon pressing.

"At the time of this recording, yes, I was hellbent on converting my live sound to what you hear on this LP. It had been my first and only attempt at this sound, and while I am myself curious how I pulled it off in that one take, and while I really enjoy how it sounds, I never tried doing it again. Maybe I will for some of these upcoming shows."
