Bloodshot Bill sings King Khan & BBQ Show gets 7-inch vinyl release!

Bloodshot Bill's two-song tribute to King Khan & BBQ is out June 22nd via Cacoophony Clan Records outta Texas. 

Here's the scoop...

Bloodshot Bills' rock n' roll wizardry birthed the "June 19th Special" in the year of 2020. I quickly snagged this digital only release which featured two beautiful stripped covers of The King Khan and BBQ Show. But these musical gems became elusive as the release was available for only 24 hours and then vanished into obscurity. I reached out to Bloodshot Bill asking if he'd be down for putting those dead stock covers to wax for charity. This 7-inch vinyl is a testament to the magic that can happen when passion, talent, and charitable spirits converge in the world of music. It's out June 22nd but you can preorder your copy now right here.

This 7-inch vinyl record is the first release in a charitable initiative titled "Singles Only." In this project, the label produces the vinyl, the artist chooses a charity, and all proceeds from the vinyl sales are donated directly to the selected charity. Bloodshot Bill has selected The P.K. Mark Sultan releasing live LP for Record Store Day

It wasn't that long ago that Mark "BBQ" Sultan recorded two albums worth of unusual covers backed by his pals Choyce from Red Mass, Jared and Cole fom the Black Lips, Erin from the Spits and others which In The Red issued last October as the 14-track Whatever I Want LP and the 12-track Whenever I Want LP. And our man still had material left over for a couple of singles.

Now just a few months on, Sultan is announcing a vinyl release of his live album The War On Rock 'n' Roll to coincide with the Record Store Day cash-in on April 21. Although Sultan has made The War On Rock 'n' Roll available on his site as a free digital download since October, this new limited-run vinyl version boasts artwork by Gary Panter who created the amazing LA punk scene handbills for the Screamers and the Germs. Like many RSD-related releases it's a slight repackaging of something you may already own.  

"In The Red Records has decided to release this recording on vinyl to celebrate Record Store Day and I am thrilled," says Sultan. "While you listen to this recording, keep in mind that it is one take, live, and that the sides of the LP split the recording, obviously due to vinyl's time limitations upon pressing.

"At the time of this recording, yes, I was hellbent on converting my live sound to what you hear on this LP. It had been my first and only attempt at this sound, and while I am myself curious how I pulled it off in that one take, and while I really enjoy how it sounds, I never tried doing it again. Maybe I will for some of these upcoming shows."

Max and Mark's Ape-tastic adventure continues Thursday @ Shitty Cheers

On Thursday night, Deadly Snakes keyboardist turned thespian Max McCabe-Lokos and fellow part-time selecta Mark "BBQ" Sultan return to Shitty Cheers aka The Unlovable (1415-B Dundas West) for another chimp-crazy Ape Sodom vinyl throwdown where they will again attempt to confound douchey hipsters by playing nutty-cool records from their collections that sound nothing like lame indie-rock or 80s retro blather. To that I say, right on my primate brothers!    
Because Sultan has a prior performance engagement with DOA (at 1266 Queen West) starting at 10 pm, the opening of the Ape Sodom night will be left in the capable monkey paws of McCabe-Lokos with the slightly sweaty BBQ boy joining the party later in the evening.
At least that's the plan according to Sultan's Facebook posting:
"i recommend coming this time but not if you are douchey, like last week. Still, we will have fun. Max will be spinning solo while I play a show with DOA, but we will reunite to play you a mixed bag of shit: Ornette Coleman, The Fugs, The Seeds, Throbbing Gristle, Heart, Bad Brains, etc x 1000000."

Ding-Dongs calling and Melvin Davis too!

Another day, another Mark Sultan side project, right? This time our favourite turbaned drum thumper who is alternately known as BBQ has thrown in with fellow Montrealer, psychobilly rebel Bloodshot Bill last seen raising a ruckus in Berlin with King Khan as the Tandoori Knights. The gruesome twosome from the city of smoked meat are calling themselves The Ding-Dongs and they ain't messin' around. Well, a little. Evidently, the 13 unhinged tracks of trashy terror they waxed together proved a bit too rock 'n' roll for labels here in Canada  ("We don't really get it – with a name like the Ding-Dongs, we were expecting to hear some glockenspiel").

However, it's just the sort of recklessly raunchy slop that Billy Miller and Miriam Linna have built their Norton recording empire upon so they jumped at the chance to release the Ding Dongs dandy debut which is available now on CD and LP at all right-on record retailers.
To help sell their hot new product, Mark and Bill took a camera out onto the snowy streets of Montreal and forced unsuspecting citizens to listen to a Ding-Dongs tune, then documented their puzzled/annoyed reactions for the info-mercial below. Watch for a cameo appearance by my pal Denis, very convincing in the role of the bemused owner cool Montreal record shop Le Pick-up (169 Avenue des Pins Est at Avenue de l'Hotel de Ville).

 



Melvin Davis comes crawling back

Also new from Norton is a 7-inch single from Detroit R&B swinger Melvin Davis which pairs an unreleased thriller I Won't Come Crawling Back To You recorded in 1962 at D-town's famed Fortune Records cinderblock studio on Third Avenue with his rare rookie brush-off belter for the Jack Pot label, I Don't Want You No More from 1961 – a very good production year. Fans of Davis' Detroit contemporaries such as Gino Washington, Nathaniel Mayer and Andre Williams should take note.

Even better news is that the 67 year-old Groovesville great is still active and will be celebrating the single release with a Detroit performance backed by the Party Stompers featuring former Detroit Cobras guitarist Jeff Meier at the Park Bar (2040 Park Avenue at West Elizabeth) on Saturday, May 15.
As an added attraction, Danny Kroha (of the Gories, Demolition Doll Rods and Rocket 454) will be introducing his new group with a lively opening set and the mayor of Downtown Soulville, Mr. Finewine along with Ann Arbor Soul Club members in good standing Brad Hales and Breck T. Bunce will be spinning an astonishing selection of vintage 45s you're unlikely to hear anywhere else.  Advance tickets for this dyn-o-mite Detroit getdown are just $8 and available from The Crofoot (call 248-858-9333 or see link below).
