April March sings Kelley Stoltz EP due for Record Store Day

The 4-song April March Sings Kelley Stoltz 12" EP is being released by Agitated Records on April 20th. Read all about it!

April March Sings Kelley Stoltz EP

Four special tracks recorded by April March and Kelley Stoltz, whereby April sings Kelley Stotlz songs in french, and vice versa, a one-off meeting of underground pop legends, and overground garage rock royalty. Mixed & masterd by Warren DeFever at Third Man, issued with two different bagette-enhanced sleeves, and two different colour vinyl options. Blue and Red. Ooh La La! C'est Magnifique!

April March: "I was in Nashville with Olivia Jean on a little break from shooting our "Allons Y" video at Third Man. I got in her car and she cranked up her playlist. Out jumped "Double Exposure". I went bananas right there in the passenger seat. "Kelley Stokes!", she smiled wide. It reminded me of something I'd heard in a dream. I went around singing songs from "Double Exposure" for a few weeks zeroing in on "Are You My Love" and "Your Face". I thought to myself cover-wise there's nothing to add here, they're perfect as is but maybe some French versions would be a kick so I asked for an intro. A few months later I was in San Francisco kicking out the Bonne Mamans with Kelley in his studio. Lucky me and thanks to Agitated Records lucky you too."

Kelley Stoltz: “Like almost everyone in the world I was dazzled by April March's take on "Chick Habit" back in the late 90s. It was such an up feeling and joyful sound in the music and vocals. At odds with the manly wails and bleak outlooks that were standard song fare of those days. You can develop a crush on the voice in your speakers, you know! I did anyway. I was so pleased to hear from her in person and out of the blue, years later, and find out she wanted to do her own versions of my songs. I soon got to re-recording the music bits, and as she asked, stayed pretty true to their original form… maybe even improving on them just a tad. She appeared at my door one day and we instantly hit it off and laughed and sang and climbed on an elliptical machine. We did some recording and then took a walk and ate tacos. She even gave my daughter her first book. We're just friends, but I'll always have that crush when I hear her voice! I hope you enjoy April March Sings Kelley Stoltz as much as I did working on them.”

Tracks: "Es-Tu Mon Amour," "Ton Visage," "Are You My Love," "Your Face"

You can also pre-order a copy of Kelley Stoltz's forthcoming La Fleur album (out June 7th) right here

Young Fresh Fellows return to The Egg for Toxic Youth LP

Scott McCauhey and crew went back to Conrado Uno's Egg Studios for their new Toxic Youth album out Record Store Day via Yep Roc.
Here's the scoop...
The Young Fresh Fellows are back with an electric new toaster, Toxic Youth. Remember their 1989 anthem “Two Guitars Bass & Drums”? Well, nothing has changed, except everything.  Hopes have been dashed, but the men still love music. Subtitled Back To The Egg, the Fellows return to where it all began, with one last roundup at the infamous Egg Studios, Seattle WA, produced once again by Conrad Uno (who also struck gold with The Presidents Of The United States Of America).

When the Fellows heard that Uno was closing up his studio and retiring from the limelight, the band grabbed a last weekend to record a couple songs (they had THREE in various shape of decomposition). A couple days later there were 17 tracks, of which 12 were deemed PERFECT. “Gear Summer 2013” is Everything-Is-Falling-Apart-In-Three-Minutes, and was planned to be a smash summer single — in 2013 (amazingly, things have gotten worse).  The Buzzcocks and Rezillos concur. “Never Had It Bad” heralds the spring with blue jays and more sad punk-pop problem-solving, Ramones-style. And don’t miss the heart-rending saga of a rock and roll band(s) (#47 in a series) “Bleed Out”.

The fine folks at Yep Roc are pressing up 2000 copies of Toxic Youth on 'toxic green' vinyl for release on Record Store Day which is April 18th. Watch the Young Fresh Fellows preview a couple songs from the album following the video for "Never Had It Bad" below.

Now-Again's 2LP gatefold version of Earth Rot includes a bonus album of instrumentals. Watch the promo clip below.

1970’s Earth Rot, the final album in David Axelrod’s Capitol Trilogy, and the first of his solo releases to incorporate choral vocals, set the visionary composer/arranger/produer up for his final stage as an architect of jazz fusion and ensured that his productions would help future architects of hip hop.

Gatefold 2LP contains bonus second album with Earth Rot’s instrumentals, never before released.

This is the third Now-Again issue in a series of reissues centered around Axelrod’s Capitol Trilogy in 2018 – Song of Innocence saw release in April, and Songs of Experience was released in July.

Audiophile reissue, lacquered directly from Axelrod’s original master tapes at Capitol Records by Ron McMaster.

Something Weird this way comes on Black Friday

Modern Harmonic dives deep into Something Weird's vault of cult film soundtrack madness for a boffo 2LP set.
Take an auditory trip through a wacky world of oddball and obscure “classick” exploitation cinema soundtracks from the 1960s and early 1970s, presented by one of the most beloved genre film video companies of all time… Something Weird! Two LPs chock-full of oddities and earworms with great sets of liners and track-by-track factoids!

Something Weird Video was founded in 1990 by Mike Vraney in Seattle, Washington. He was inspired by his teenage job as a theater projectionist. His love for the obscure films that never made it to video prompted him to transfer hundreds of ancient reels of film to VHS and DVD. Although Mike passed away from lung cancer back in 2014, his partner, visual artist Lisa Petrucci now runs Something Weird Video (see clip below) which still specializes in bizarre low-budget exploito films of the '30s through the '70s. Iconic purveyors of the lost and the strange, Something Weird Video have partnered with Modern Harmonic to bring you Something Weird: Greatest Hits – 2LPs of the greatest songs and soundbites from their voluminous catalog of filth and general grindhouse fodder.

Calexico plans to issue RSD live album many fans already own

If you already believe that Record Store Day has devolved into nothing more than a cynical cash grab, ANTI-'s announcement that they'll be re-releasing Calexico's live album Spiritoso on April 20 should do nothing to convince you otherwise. As longtime fans of the desert-dwelling titans of twang are no doubt aware, the 12-track disc  – which the UK-based City Slang label issued last year – features songs spanning Calexico's 23-year career performed live in Germany backed by the Radio Symphonie Orchestre Wien. Those who own the City Slang version of Spiritoso which Calexico has been selling at shows, won't need this straight repressing that is said to be limited to 3000 copies.

Whether Calexico is creatively tapped of unique RSD release ideas or couldn't be bothered to come up with something new and exciting their most dedicated followers would appreciate, the decision to simply put out an album previously issued in another territory sets a new low bar for Record Store Day product previously set by labels pressing up limited vinyl versions of their CD-only titles.

Considering how thoroughly Calexico documents just about every note they play, it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult for them to assemble a unique release for Record Store Day just out of leftover demos and live tracks. How much trouble would it have been to cobble together a few songs they've contributed to tribute albums and various collections over the years?

Their inspired takes of Casey's Last Ride (off Nothing Left To Lose: A Tribute to Kris Kristofferson), Tulsa Telephone Book (from Real – The Tom T. Hall Project) and Will Oldham's I Send My Love To You (from I Am Cold Rock, I Am Dull Grass) would make one great side of a fantastic10" EP, with maybe John Fahey's Dance of Death (off I Am The Resurrection), Alejandro Escovedo's Wave (from Por Vida) and Arcade Fire's Ocean of Noise on the flip. Who knows, the covers concept record might even introduce the wonders of Calexico a whole new audience. Of course, it would require some effort and a little ingenuity so you may have to settle for the clip below.

For the wineskin equipped interested in seeing Calexico in the great outdoors, the group will be appearing at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Wakarusa Festival and the Nelsonville Music Festival in the coming months. They've also booked some club and soft-seater dates, most notably being a stop at the Mod Club in Toronto on June 12. Here's the complete tour itinerary so far...

Misfits for Record Store Day

Get out yer devil-locks! To mark the 30th anniversary of the Misfits' Walk Among Us album released by Slash in 1982, Rhino has pressed up a "limited" run of 4,500 copies of the horror-punk classic for Record Store Day this Saturday (April 21).

Since just about everyone on the planet who ever wanted a copy of Walk Among Us already owns it, this "faithful reproduction of the original with music cut from the original analog masters and packaging that duplicates details down to the printed inner sleeve” (i.e. no bonus tracks, liner notes or photos) is aimed squarely at obsessive Misfits collectors. As such, the vinyl will come in three different colours in the U.S. with 1,250 on red, 1,250 on blue and 500 on clear vinyl randomly distributed to participating RSD stores.

Those adept at arithmetic are probably wondering "what about the other 1,500 LPs?" Well, there will also be a purple edition of 1,500 copies earmarked for international export. That means Misfits fans in Canada will likely be buying multiple copies so they can swap their purples for alternate colours with U.S. hoarders er... dealers. It's sad but true.

Mark Sultan releasing live LP for Record Store Day

It wasn't that long ago that Mark "BBQ" Sultan recorded two albums worth of unusual covers backed by his pals Choyce from Red Mass, Jared and Cole fom the Black Lips, Erin from the Spits and others which In The Red issued last October as the 14-track Whatever I Want LP and the 12-track Whenever I Want LP. And our man still had material left over for a couple of singles.

Now just a few months on, Sultan is announcing a vinyl release of his live album The War On Rock 'n' Roll to coincide with the Record Store Day cash-in on April 21. Although Sultan has made The War On Rock 'n' Roll available on his site as a free digital download since October, this new limited-run vinyl version boasts artwork by Gary Panter who created the amazing LA punk scene handbills for the Screamers and the Germs. Like many RSD-related releases it's a slight repackaging of something you may already own.

"In The Red Records has decided to release this recording on vinyl to celebrate Record Store Day and I am thrilled," says Sultan. "While you listen to this recording, keep in mind that it is one take, live, and that the sides of the LP split the recording, obviously due to vinyl's time limitations upon pressing.

"At the time of this recording, yes, I was hellbent on converting my live sound to what you hear on this LP. It had been my first and only attempt at this sound, and while I am myself curious how I pulled it off in that one take, and while I really enjoy how it sounds, I never tried doing it again. Maybe I will for some of these upcoming shows."

Record Store Day 2010, Part II: Black Friday

While it's not officially designated as a Record Store Day, Friday, November 26 – the day after Thanksgiving in the US – will see a similar sort of hubbub at independent record retailers as some labels are taking advantage of the post-turkey shopping frenzy by issuing special limited-edition singles, LPs, CDs and DVDs available only on Black Friday.
The big difference here is that it isn't a holiday in Canada so expect a crush of frantic vinyl junkies at Rotate This, Soundscapes, Vortex and Sunrise during the lunch hour with a second wave starting around 5 pm. Incidentally, Rotate This kicks off their annual pre-inventory "There Goes The Neighbourhood" weekend sale today with 15% off all new and used vinyl and CDs and on Saturday and Sunday used vinyl will be 40% off.

Here are a few of the more interesting Black Friday exclusives up for grabs:

Black Keys - Brothers Double box including the album released as 45 rpm double vinyl set along with a limited-run poster and 6-song 10" LP with previously unreleased live versions of Everlasting Light, Next Girl, Tighten Up, Howlin’ For You, She’s Long Gone and Too Afraid to Love You
