Mulatu Astatke & BJE return with To Know Without Knowing

Ethio jazz innovator Mulatu Astatke & Black Jesus Experience issued To Know Without Knowing via Germany's Agogo Records.

Here's the scoop...
A grooving transcontinental gem, To Know Without Knowing is Mulatu Astatke's second collaborative album with Black Jesus Experience and was recorded in Melbourne, Australia and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Filled with the warmth of the mentorship and friendship of their creative partnership honed over a decade of performing together in Africa, Australia and UK/Europe.

Mulatu Astatke is the Father of Ethio-Jazz and one of Africa’s most influential and enduring musical figures. Black Jesus Experience is a community of artists, centred around a twelve piece global-funk-machine born of Australia’s vibrant multiculturalism.

Mulatu and Black Jesus Experience met in Addis Ababa in 2009, embarking on both a musical relationship and a friendship that has led Mulatu Astake to describe Black Jesus Experience as, “My favourite backing band” and, “…they’re family.”

Mulatu’s great contribution to music has been to to combine Jazz and funk grooves with Ethiopia’s distinctive pentatonic scales. His musical genius is the sensuality and sophistication with which Mulatu contrasts these minimalist scales with richly chromatic harmony.

But Mulatu’s equally great contribution has been to share both his enduringly unique modernity and Ethiopia’s timelessly spiritual music with the world. Black Jesus Experience treasure the special relationship of generosity, mentorship and collaboration they have been privileged to share with this master musician. Rudresh Mahanthappa vs. Mingo Saldivar

Jazz saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa takes on Mingo Saldivar in a "Ring Of Fire" challenge.

Joe Pernice's new solo album, Richard out now!

Singer/songwriter Joe Pernice follows up the Pernice Brothers' Spread The Feeling with a solo set recorded while in lockdown.

Here's the scoop from Joe...
Greetings.
On June 19,  I will release a solo album. It’s called RICHARD. It’s basically me and a nylon string guitar I recorded in my basement bike shop during Covid lockdown. There are no world-altering songs of protest on it. There are no songs that poetically and compassionately describe the lives of our fellow citizens who have lived within a system braided with racism. I wish I could write that song. God, knows I have tried, but they always come up short. (Maybe the title song goes part of the way there. I don’t know.)

But I tried to make as beautiful thing as I could with the idea of adding to the net positive of the world. It’s what I try to do with all my records. It’s not a lot as far as contributions go, but so far music is the best way I feel like I can give. (For those who think my music blows, I say, “I completely understand that, and you should see my paintings.”)

My record will be available on June 19th via Bandcamp for immediate digital download, plus LP and CD preorder. On that day Bandcamp will donate all per-sale fees to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. And for every record from my Bandcamp catalog that sells or is pre-ordered on that day, my partner and I at Ashmont Records will make a matching contribution to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Like I said, it’s not a lot, but it’s an additional way we’re able to contribute.

I sincerely hope the new record can help to briefly soothe people. But make no mistake: It’s not intended to make people forget and ignore the times we are in. Quiet is not the same as Peace, And I’ll keep trying to write that song.
Love to all,
JP

Whaddya mean you don't know Geoff Krozier

Here's a rare peformance clip of the late Aussie synth-shaman Geoff Krozier in action. Check out the Tranceformer album issued by Finders Keepers.

Imagine a coven of Jodorowsky, Daevid Allen, Mr. Crowley, Rameses and Arthur Brown then combine them into a one-man mutant magician and add the finest Australian synth duo since Cybotron. BEHOLD Geoff Krozier & The Generator.

This faithful reproduction of one of Australias rarest synthy post-prog vinyl artefacts bequeths the only recorded fruits of the precious magick months before Geoff Krozier’s untimely death in 1981. Combining shamanic spoken word with nodding kosmische instrumentation this album is fuelled by ARP/Roland/ETI (Aussie synth) technology and leaves fans of synthetic soundtracks, electronic experimentalism and stubborn synth pop salivating for more (and more there is).

Meet this Ex Kongress (NY punk band) collaborator, Sydney’s official 1980 Magician Of The Year and “the high priest of exorcism-rock” and watch him, and his trusty studio wizards, provide fans of Bruce Haack and Doris White with one of the most absurd electronic private press LPs to come from either end of the pointed planet.

Welcome to the house of the sun. You can get a copy of Geoff Krozier & The Generator's Tranceformer double LP or digital download directly from the Finders Keepers label right here.

“Finders Keepers really hit the crackpot, erm I mean jackpot this time! This is most excellent and a must have gem – I promise you won’t regret owning this glimpse of Krozier’s weird and wonderful world… It took me two seconds to love this record”Anton Newcombe (Brain Jonestown Massacre)

Harlem Gospel Travelers release new protest single "Fight On!"

The Harlem Gospel Travelers recorded "Hold On!" with guitarist/producer Eli "Paperboy" Reed. Watch the video below.

Group member and songwriter Thomas Gatling says:

“During slavery, songs were a form of communication for black people. These songs became known as hymns, or as our seasoned saints call them, the songs that brought us over. “Fight On!” was inspired by a hymn called ”Hold On (Just A Little While Longer)”, a song used to encourage black people to not give up. Through that song, God gave me ”Fight On!” It was written to amplify the voices that for so long have fallen on deaf ears and to encourage and uplift people to continue the fight for equality and against white supremacy. Be empowered, my people. We are not thugs, we are innovators. We are intelligent and our feelings, hopes, dreams, and lives matter. Fight on, and everything's gonna be alright.” – Thomas Gatling

Mekons knock out an Exquisite new album

While in lockdown, Jon Langford reconnected with fellow mekons to create Exquisite out today! Listen to "Escalera" below.

Here's the scoop from MEKONS HQ...

Current plague year 2020.

After an April rendezvous in Valencia was necessarily cancelled, mekons adopted the "exquisite corpse" method as a means of collectively assembling lyrics and tunes and recording their new album.

Locked down in various locations stretchinfrom the West Coast of California to the East End of London, mekons sang and played into their cellphones, e-mailing, uploading and Whatsapping their wailings, beatings, scratchings and strummings across the globe through the billions of interconnected nodes of our networked panopticon.

Exquisite was recorded in splendid physical isolation on mobile phones, broken cassette recorders, clay tablets & other ancient technologies in Aptos, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York & Devon in April and May 2020. Mike Hagler assembled the results in Chicago, which were mixed by The Baron (Dave Trumfio) in LA soon after.

Exquisite is only available as a digital download and only through Bandcamp, beginning on Juneteenth (June 19). On that day, Bandcamp is donating 100% of their share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, with the pledge to do so "for every Juneteenth hereafter." https://mekons.bandcamp.com

Yeah Right! releases punk protest comp Black Lives Matter

Yeah Right! has brought together 31 bands for the Black Lives Matter benefit available now via Bandcamp.

Here's the scoop from Yeah Right! Records...
There's a common saying that goes back centuries which states that evil prevails when good people do nothing. We're witnessing the culmination of years of outrage at a lack of justice as it spills out into the city streets. Things have to change. We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, and we step aside so that their voice may be more clearly heard.

Proceeds from this compilation will be donated to Black Lives Matter and other organizations that empower Black Communities.

Power to the people.

Quarantunes: Michael Weston King

Michael Weston King performs his song "Riding The Range" in honour of the late great Townes Van Zandt.

Writes Michael...
This years Townes Van Zandt International Festival was cancelled for the obvious reason but organiser Andrea Parodi has been asking previous performers to film a Townes song so as to bring the festival online. Some really fine interpretations have been posted over the past few weeks. Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Steve Forbert, James McMurtry, Malcolm Holcombe, Gurf Morlix, Andrew Hardin, Andrea himself and many more from Europe and the US. If you dig Townes, check them out. Andrea asked if I’d play my song “Riding The Range” and tell the story behind it and how it came about that Townes sang on it and then later cut his own version. So, here It is, just after Jono Mansons fine reading of one of my favourite yet more obscure TVZ songs, ‘Harms Swifts Way’. Enjoy. M x

Obscure swingers fuel New Breed R&B: Saturday Night Special

Ace's 24-track Saturday Night Special comp features tracks from Esko Wallace, Flora D, The Corvairs and guitarist Curley Mays.

Here's the scoop...
New Breed is back with a bang on July 31. The opening track and title inspiration is Aaron Collins & the Teen Queens’ ‘Every Saturday Night’. Its R&B pedigree is inestimable; Aaron was a member of the Flairs/Flares LA vocal group and wrote songs for Z.Z. Hill, Jackie Day, Cookie Jackson and others and, in 1972, Ray Charles recorded his ‘Every Saturday Night’ for ABC. The Modern tape vaults have given up this original 1966 R&B take of the song with both Aaron and his sisters, the Teen Queens, performing at their best. All the more remarkable as the girls had not recorded since 1962 and it was to be their last session, both dying tragically a few years later.

More unissued beauties come from East Coast outfit The Corvairs with ‘I’ll Never Do It Again’, Oakland’s funky bluesman Johnny Talbot and ‘Satisfied’, Gay Meadows’ Atlanta-recorded ‘Head Doctor’, a trio of obscure Ohio R&B outfits – Little Macey & The Valiants, Big Charley & The Domans and Pee Wee Foster. Rare 45s come courtesy of Curly Mays, Pat Garvis, Esko Wallace and the Tren-teens. There are Ace CD tracks that went largely undiscovered by the New Breed crowd from Prince Conley, Rob Robinson and the Lon-Genes, while other highlights come from the very recently discovered Freddie Williams track ‘Purty Li'l Mama’ recorded for Norman Petty in New York, Slim & The Twilites’ New Orleans-sounding ‘Family Man’ and Tony Clarke’s early Detroit rocker ‘Your Love Must Be Taboo’ – presented digitally from master tape for the first time. We have stunning photos of Margaret Lewis, Flora D, the Metallics, Rob Robinson and Johnny “Guitar” Watson, along with some fax ‘n’ info courtesy of compiler Ady Croasdell. Check out the track list following the song clips. Pre-order a copy of New Breed R&B: Saturday Night Special directly from Ace right here: https://www.acerecords.co.uk/new-breed-rb-saturday-night-special

Chris Cacavas knocks out new solo album Burn The Maps

Legacy member of Giant Sand and Dream Syndicate, Chris Cacavas recorded Burn The Maps while at home in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Sez Chris...
"After recording my last studio record in 2009 I kind of ground to a halt for various, sundry and unfortunate reasons. Shortly before the end of 2019 I started writing and recording again. At 11:30 pm on New Year’s Eve 2019 I was strumming my guitar and immediately ran to my computer to start recording a multi track demo which seemed to be the crack in the dam.

"I started revisiting song ideas that I had recorded on my cell phone and proceeded to record them with electronic drums, multiple guitars and keyboard tracks and the occasional 3 part vocal harmony. This process brought me and my songwriting back to life and what you’re about to hear are the fruits of this joyful labor. The result is kind of a high fidelity lo-fi record which I’m really pleased with – Enjoy!"

Chris
