Martin Bisi's Sound & Chaos doc screens @ Collective Arts, Saturday

The screening of the Sound & Chaos doc will be followed by performances of the Martin Bisi Collective and Crying High. Starts at 7:30pm.

Here's the scoop...

Martin Bisi presents the Canadian premiere screening of Sound And Chaos: The Story Of BC Studio, a feature-length documentary about his Brooklyn recording space at Collective Arts Toronto (148 Markham St) on Saturday (September 14) at 7:30 pm. There'll be a Q&A with the director followed by performances by the Martin Bisi Collective and Toronto band, Crying High. Get tickets right here

Martin Bisi is an original No Wave and Post-Punk producer from New York City who has been part of it's musical history for the past four decades. Bisi made landmark recordings by Brian Eno (On Land), Sonic Youth, Swans, Unsane, Lydia Lunch, John Zorn, Africa Bambaataa, JG Thirlwell/Foetus, Cop Shoot Cop, Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", Helmet, Live Skull, White Hills, Dresden Dolls and countless others.

For over 40 years, Martin Bisi has recorded music from his studio in Brooklyn's Gowanus neighborhood. After a chance New York encounter, the studio was founded with money from Brian Eno, who subsequently worked on the album On Land there.

Working with Bill Laswell and the band Material, Bisi recorded Herbie Hancock's hit Rockit in this underground space. This was the first mainstream, popular song to feature a DJ and a turntable, utilizing "scratching". Following that success, Bisi worked with many other influential musicians there, including Sonic Youth, Swans, Angels of Light, John Zorn, Foetus and the Dresden Dolls. He has recorded across many genres, from experimental music, to hip hop and indie rock in the old factory building by the contaminated Gowanus Canal.

However, the future of the recording studio is in question as it is being squeezed in by the encroaching gentrification of the neighborhood. A new, massive Whole Foods supermarket across the street, is the latest addition to this once out-of-the-way area that Bisi fears will increase property values to the point of pushing out long-time renters and artists like himself.

The documentary includes interviews with musicians such as Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Michael Gira of Swans, Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls, Bob Bert, who played on Sonic Youth's Bad Moon Rising, Bill Laswell of Material, JG Thirlwell aka Foetus, Grand Mixer DXT and Michael Holman of Gray (with Jean-Michel Basquiat) and creator of famed 1984 hip-hop TV pilot Graffiti Rock.

Red Mass assemble all-star cast for A Hopeless Noise

Montreal's Red Mass are joined by Mike Watt, King Khan, Mac DeMarco, etc for their new concept album A Hopeless Noise, in the works since at least 2014.
Here's the scoop...
"The album tells the story of the Diamond Girl. You follow her as she falls from grace and loses touch with reality. It is The Mass’ modern day retelling of Don Quixote. As the Diamond Girl develops a psychological disorder and suffers delusions of grandeur. She still believes that she is living in the utmost luxury when in reality, her world crumbles around her. Amidst her trauma, she wanders aimlessly through the city and falls prey to the most decadent of low lives. She wallows in vice as the wings of temptation carry her from one nightclub to the next. When she finally breaks she goes on a violent rampage.

"In order to mirror the Diamond Girl’s multiple personalities, the group worked in numerous punk sub genres and picked different artists to bring each song to life. Musicians from all over the world joined in, including members of The Black Lips, Duchess Says, Human Eye, Fly Pan Am & Godspeedyoublackemperor as well as Mac DeMarco, Rick Froberg (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu), John Kastner (Doughboys, Asexuals), Evan Dando, Hugo Mudie (The Sainte Catherines), producer/musician Martin Bisi, Jered Gummere (The Ponys), King Khan and Mike Watt. We ended up with collaborations with some of our favourite musicians, our friends and even our dad's added to the mix. Love is supreme."  – Roy Vucino, Red Mass

Watch the new Red Mass video for "To Fall From Grace" featuring King Khan followed by a live clip of Red Mass developing material for A Hopeless Noise at Portland's Star Theatre back in 2014. Check out A Hopeless Noise on the group's Bandcamp page or stream the album here

Watch the video for Martin Bisi's "Save Sludgie The Whale of Gowanus"

"Save Sludgie The Whale of Gowanus" is off the BC35 Vol. 2 celebrating Martin Bisi's Brooklyn recording studio.

Here's the scoop on BC 35...
BC35 refers to the weekend of performances and resulting album making the 35 year anniversary of Martin Bisi's BC Studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Musicians spanning the history of the studio were grouped into ensembles— mostly improvisational, although there was new material written specifically for the occasion— and performed and recorded live before an audience of BC Studio supporters and members.

There were also some long-awaited reunions. Martin Bisi with members of Sonic Youth, Swans, White Hills, JG Thirlwell, Cop Shoot Cop, Live Skull reunion, Pop 1280, The Dresden Dolls, Alice Donut, Lubricated Goat, Sxip Shirley, Parlor Walls and many more!

Recorded with a live audience comprised of sound pioneers, social deviants, and studio fans, these tracks were mixed and edited with care over several month by Martin Bisi and by veterans of the studio throughout the decades.

The results were compiled into Volumes 1 and 2, this is the second chapter that will be released on April 19, one year after the first one. Martin Bisi founded BC Studio in 1981 in the desolate and post-industrial (but now rapidly developing) Gowanus section of Brooklyn, along with Bill Laswell, and with financial and technical help from Brian Eno. Eno’s record On Land (released 1982) was the first recorded session at BC Studio.
