Cassandra Wilson celebrates 30 years of New Moon Daughter @ Koerner Hall, Wednesday
Cassandra Wilson reprises the music of her acclaimed 1995 album New Moon Daughter with the musicians who cut it.
Toronto Jazz Festival presents Cassandra Wilson
at Koerner Hall (273 Bloor St. West)
Wednesday, June 24
Tickets: Starting at $95 available here.
The Grammy Award-winning jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter, and producer from Jackson, Mississippi makes her Koerner Hall debut with an all-star band from her critically-lauded New Moon Daughter (Blue Note) album from 1995 including Sisters Euclid guitarist Kevin Breit, bassist Lonnie Plaxico. guitarist Brandon Ross and percussionist Jeffrey Haynes in addition to Swiss-born, NYC-based harmonica ace Grégoire Maret (who has worked with Herbie Hancock, Sting, Pat Metheney).
Critic Gary Giddins described Wilson as “a singer blessed with an unmistakable timbre and attack who has expanded the playing field” by incorporating blues, country, and folk music into her work. Her honours include two Grammy Awards, the Django d'Or Award, the Edison Award, and a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail. Ms. Wilson also performed in one of the leading roles for Wynton Marsalis’s Blood on the Fields, the first jazz album to receive a Pulitzer Prize. In 2022, she was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship and was named an NEA Jazz Master alongside Stanley Clarke, Billy Hart, and Donald Harrison.
Wilson’s tour celebrates the 30th anniversary of her release New Moon Daughter, which artfully blended jazz and Americana, and catapulted her to a new echelon of fame in the jazz world – hitting #1 on the Billboard Jazz Chart, and earning her a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. Her Koerner Hall performance features four of the musicians who joined Wilson for the New Moon Daughter recording.

One For The Weekend: (The New) Orchestra Baobab
The new version of Orchestra Baobab (below) – entirely different from the legendary ensemble you knew – has a new single "Togne Bakhoul" and a UK/EU tour.
Orchestra Baobab – Made In Senegal
‘Togne Bakhoul’ is the first new release in almost a decade from the legendary Senegalese group Orchestra Baobab, heralding a new collaboration between the Orchestra & Strut Records.
Formed over 50 years ago as the resident band of the Baobab Club in Dakar, their timeless fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms, Wolof griot traditions, mbalax, Congolese rumba and jazz continues to resonate across generations and continents. Now, the celebrated big band marks a new chapter in their illustrious history
"Made In Senegal," to be released by Strut Records UK in conjunction with Madoky Music in October 2026, is Orchestra Baobab's first new studio album since "Tribute To Ndiouga Dieng" in 2017 — celebrating home, heritage, love and resilience, recorded entirely in Dakar.
With the sad passing of Baobab's founding guitarist Barthélémy Atisso (in 2021) and saxophonist/percussionist Rudy Gomis (in 2022) – who together helped create the group's signature sound – the new version of Orchestra Baobab has very little real connection to the group that began in Dakar back in 1970. Today's line-up – led by 77 year old saxophonist Seydou Norou “Thierno” Koité (who was a member of Baobab's contemporaries in Senegal: Le Sahel and Super Etoile de Dakar), with Zacharia "Papino" Koité (lead vocals), Korka Dieng (lead vocals), Taga Koité (drums), Moussa Cissokho (percussion), Yahya Fall (rhythm guitar), Malick Sy (bass), René "Bolero" Sowatche (guitar), Wilfrid Zinzou (saxophone/trombone) blends veteran musicians with a younger generation determined to preserve Baobab's enduring sound. Made In Senegal is another modern Baobab classic — the perfect time for a new generation to discover one of Africa's greatest ever big bands.
More to come, but for now, check out their beautifully composed new track ‘Togne Bakhoul’ (with lyrics by Rudy Gomis) along with a 30-minute performance from 2025. You can catch the new version of Orchestra Baobab on tour in Europe and UK – see dates below.

Isaiah Collier: Collier Plays Coltrane @ Hugh's Room, June 22
Isaiah Collier's highly anticipated Toronto appearance – which clearly should've been held at a much larger venue – is now sold out.
at Hugh's Room's Green Sanderson Hall
Monday, June 22, 2026
Tickets: sold out!
Doors at 9 pm, Show at 930 pm.
The Toronto Jazz Festival is excited to present Isaiah Collier in “Collier Plays Coltrane” - a special celebration of John Coltrane’s centennial.
Saxophonist Isaiah Collier has emerged as one of the most exciting voices in contemporary jazz, known for blending the rich traditions of the past with the urgency of the present to forge the sound of the future. Described as a maverick of creative and improvisational force, he has collaborated with jazz luminaries such as Kahil El’Zabar, Ambrose Akinmusire, Craig Taborn, Joe Dyson, Azar Lawrence and NEA Jazz Masters Billy Hart, Marshall Allen, and Denardo Coleman (son of free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman), among many others. A proud member of the legendary Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), Collier stands firmly within the lineage of Chicago’s rich tenor saxophone legacy.
DownBeat Magazine has hailed him as “The Next Sax Giant”—a title befitting an artist who continues to reshape the sonic landscape of modern jazz. Watch Isaiah Collier in action below.
New Velvet Underground book by Richie Unterberger "Do What You Fear Most"
Richie Unterberger's Velvets study Do What You Fear Most – out in the UK since May – is finally coming to North America.
Here's the scoop from Omnibus Press...
No band has reshaped the possibilities of popular music like The Velvet Underground. Formed in New York in 1965, the Velvets emerged from the nexus of art, fashion, politics, music and counterculture. Although widespread popularity and acclaim evaded them during their four-album lifespan, their enduring, cross-generational appeal meant the Velvets could count iconic contemporaries like Leonard Cohen, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix as fans, alongside future legends such as Roxy Music, the Pretenders and Sonic Youth.
Do What You Fear Most chronicles how an unlikely group of upstarts came to define the musical zeitgeist. In a sprawling and engrossing narrative, Richie Unterberger follows the group from their disparate origins to their ascendancy as Andy Warhol’s Factory house band in New York City. It explores the creative alchemy between the core trio of Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico, the shocking exits and ever-changing lineups, as well as the wider New York cultural scene of the period.
Rigorously researched and packed with previously undocumented insights, this book features many first-hand interviews with the group’s associates, as well as material newly unearthed from the Lou Reed Archive and the Andy Warhol Archive, alongside never-before-seen images and ephemera.
"Of all the books I have read on the story of the Velvet Underground, Richie’s is probably the best. He brings us the voices of the people who were also important to those times, but who either go unmentioned, unheard, or not written about in a balanced way. I also like the way he writes, and some of the many reviews of recordings and live shows were insightful in a way l have not come across in the work of anyone else. Bravo, Richie" — Jonathan Richman
The hardcover edition of Do What You Fear Most: The History of The Velvet Underground (Omnibus, 816 pp) is out in the US now and will hopefully be available in Canada by June 26th. If you can't wait for your local bookseller to stock it, you can pre-order it via Amazon right here... but do you really think Lou would want you to line the pockets of Jeff Bezos? Listen to Richie Unterberger chat about the Velvet Underground on the Rock 'n' Roll Book Club podcast right here.

Robbie Fulks joins members of the Waco Brothers for new Davy Crockett musical
Frontiersman Davy Crockett's political career is the focus of Congressman Davy with catchy tunes voiced by Robbie Fulks and his Chicago pals.
Davy Crockett for President? It almost happened!
Congressman Davy recounts that fascinating slice of U.S. political history in a new musical with 22 new songs by Deano from the Waco Brothers (aka Dean Schlabowske) and award-winning playwright/journalist Richard Byrne (Nero/Pseudo, Burn Your Bookes, Hotel Mayflower).
Some of the most distinctive voices in Americana to help tell this tallest of tales, including Robbie Fulks, The Mekons' Jon Langford & Sally Timms, The Meat Purveyors' Jo Watson, Four Lost Souls' Bethany Thomas,The Flat Five's Nora O’Connor & Kelly Hogan along with Chicago's Gerald Dowd and Kent Rose. As Davy might say: “Just go ahead and give it a listen!” Check out a few songs from the CD following a synopsis below.
It is 1833. Legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett is running to return to the U.S. House of Representatives. (Tennessee voters kicked him out in 1831.)
Anne Royall is the first American woman to publish her own newspaper. (“The Ballad of Anne Royall”) She travels to Tennessee to watch Davy Crockett lay out his populist platform. (“Poor Man’s Friend”) Crockett wins.
In Washington City, boarding house proprietor Mrs. Ball and her employee, Sarah, await Crockett. Yet they face competition from Mrs. Brown – who runs a fancy hotel across the street. The two women joust over their vision of Washington’s future. (“Washington City”)
The 1833 election created a nation deeply divided between the Democrats supporting President Andrew Jackson and the Whigs opposing him. The two parties address their differences in a song. (“A Faction.”) as they try to claim Crockett as their own. But Crockett lays out his own independent vision. (“A Permanent State of Affairs”)
Mrs. Ball and Mrs. Brown’s skirmish ends when Crockett chooses the cozy familiarity of the boarding house (“The Comforts of Home”). Mrs. Brown plots with the Lead Whig to bring Crockett to her hotel.
Anne Royall notices the forlorn figure of Edgar Allan Poe – who has been evicted from Mrs. Ball’s establishment to make room for legislators. They bemoan the anti-intellectualism of the time. (“The Bitter End”)
The moneyed Whigs want Crockett as their presidential candidate. (“The Proper Party”) But how can they convince The Poor Man’s Friend? Mrs. Brown appeals to Crockett’s vanity and desire to advance in life. (“The Finer Things”) He moves to her hotel and joins the Whigs as he evokes his famous motto: “Be sure you're right, then go ahead!” (“Just Go Ahead”)
Act Two
Sarah sings a short mournful song (“Sarah’s Song of Hopeless Longing”) before Anne Royall and the Whig Party sweep Crockett up into a frenetic political tour. (“Davy Crockett’s Tour to the North and Down East”) The frontiersman also discovers the power of industry. (“Busy Hands”)
Mrs. Ball and Mrs. Brown’s feud continues. Anne Royall chides them both for seeking to influence politics from behind the scenes. (“A Song About Power”)
The Democrats scheme to defeat Crockett. Lead Democrat advocates chicanery (“Hickory Dockery”). Adam Huntsman – a lawyer who lost his leg in war – volunteers to run against Crockett. (“Down A Peg”)
Edgar Allan Poe’s return to town unleashes more tumult. He seeks high minded journalism (“Poison Pens”), but Crockett uses Poe’s negative review of his book as target practice and then blazes deeper into populism to win votes. (“The Betsy Song”).
The Whigs commission a portrait of Crockett with a stuffed Bear. When Crockett falls asleep, the Bear becomes his nightmare. (“A Bear’s Life).
On the day the votes arrive back in Washington City, Mrs. Ball tries to pluck Crockett’s conscience and recall a happier moment. (“I Don’t Need You”)
When the tally is announced, Crockett loses. (“The Song of the Great Licking”) He takes leave of Washington for a new life in Texas with a brazen farewell song (Hell or Texas”).
You can get a CD version of the Congressman Davy soundtrack via Bandcamp right here. Listen to a few of the songs voiced by Robbie Fulks below. Stay tuned for a radio play version of the entire show that debuts on June 29, 2026, weaving the songs into the text of the musical.

The All Seeing Eyes
Born of a parade, the All Seeing Eyes are the pride of Dayton, Kentucky. The three-piece of multi-instrumentalists developed into the house band at Masonic Sounds Studios in that Kentucky river town. Housed in a Free Mason Blue Lodge, they created the new LP “In Us We Trust”, now available on Mauvias Foi Records (available via Bandcamp right here). The trio was recently defined as “the MC5 of the country blues” by Tav Falco, in the truest of descriptors.
Trone des Fleur, their second LP, is a brilliant follow-up to their debut and is set to explode.
Johnny Walker fronts the band, playing harmonica and guitar. He is the progenitor of the Soledad Brothers, Pearlene, and Cut in the Hill Gang who has toured singing for MC5/DKT. It should be noted that Walker has done session work with the White Stripes, the Detroit Cobras, the Greenhornes, Low Cut Connie and James Leg, and dozens more. Walker has also been championed by noted DJs John Peel and John Sinclair. Kane Kitchen (bass) has been keeping time for Barrance Whitfield and Savages and alt-country singer Jeremy Pinnell. Lance “Lucky” Kaufman is a multi-instrumentalist playing drums and singing for the All-Seeing Eyes. Lucky has toured the world with his trad-rockabilly band, the Star Devils, his collaboration with Cut in the Hill Gang as well as lending his talents to many session recordings and many other bands.
The All-Seeing Eyes was formed to play a party on a parade route for the largest annual celebration in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was quickly realized that the trio could fill the role as house musicians for Walker’s newly established recording studio, Masonic Sounds Studios, across the Ohio river. The All Seeing Eyes began writing and recording their LP in earnest while working in and recording for various artists in the Masonic Sounds Studios. They have played extensively in the Midwest and South of the United States, the UK, and France.
The bands live set has been showcased warming up for Jon Spencer, the Cobras, the Demolition Doll Rods, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds,Dead Weather, Cedrick Burnside, Tav Falco, CATL, the Melvins, and so on. They have managed to play over 60 shows a year, in spite of Walkers professional obligations as a psychiatrist and MD. The All-Seeing Eyes will be performing at Blues, Psych Rock and Garage Festivals all over the US and Europe in 2026 with a stop in Toronto for a show at the Monarch Tavern with Equator and Lunchmeat on Saturday, June 13. Advance tickets are $20 online @ Leap (Showclix) here.

R.I.P. Jamaican music legend Stranger Cole, 1942-2026
Sadly Stranger Cole – who had deep ties to the Toronto reggae scene – has passed away at 83. He'll be greatly missed.
Jamaican Ska and Reggae legend Stranger Cole moved to Toronto in the early 1970s leaving stardom behind. Despite his talent he was forced to work at the Tonka Toy factory and as a security guard at Eaton's to make a living. His entrepreneurial spirit took over and he opened his own record store and label in Kensington Market at 58 Kensington Ave. Some 40 years later, Stranger Cole returned to Toronto to visit his old neighbourhood for Chris Flanagan and Graeme Mahieson's excellent short documentary Ruff and Tuff which you can view below following a few of Stranger Cole's classic recordings. Stranger Cole has passed away but his music and legacy will live on.
