Toronto MC D-Sisive reconnects with Muneshine for The Blue Boat

D-Sisive's new 6-track Blue Boat EP was produced with longtime collaborator Muneshine for headphone listening.

Here's the scoop from D-Sisive...

I'm proud of all of my releases. Well...the ones from 2008 and onwards [haha]. But this one? THIS...ONE? Yikes.

The story behind The Blue Boat has been living in my head for 32 years. I can still vividly remember standing at Tony's bedside completely overwhelmed by the experience. I didn't fully process what was happening, but it impacted me major. Every now and then, something would trigger a memory of Tony, and I'd be right back in his apartment on Northcliffe Blvd.

Once I started releasing more introspective-type music, Tony went from a memory to a story I had to tell. But the moment had to be perfect. And after everything I've been through over the past 8 years - it can't get any more perfect than now.

The Blue Boat isn't a conventional EP. It's unlike anything I've ever released. This is in a league of its own. It's not Hip-Hop. It's not background music at a party. The Blue Boat requires commitment, and is best experienced via headphones. You need to close your eyes, and really take the story in. Feel the words and music. I know that's a lot to ask, but I believe this story is very powerful, and has potential to shift the world.

I pray The Blue Boat gets the attention I believe it deserves, and I pray you love it as much as I do. The idea of Tony is in all of us, and it's our responsibility to make sure we don't fade out like he did.

I want to thank my brother, Muneshine, for bringing this to life with me. None of this could be done without you. I believe our lives will change as soon as this is unleashed.

I also want to thank YOU. Because without you, I'd be rapping to the walls, and this would all be pointless. I truly mean it.

I called my radio show The Unknown because I plan to tell you shit that's unknown to you. Originally, it was going to be an hour of my favourite songs. But after a conversation with Orin Isaacs, who’s producing the show, we came up with something a bit better. I realized there’s already one Ryan Seacrest. And he’s gorgeous. Why try to step on his toes? I’d rather step on my own toes.

D-Sisive takes a tip from GG Allin

Toronto rapper D-Sisive prefaced the release of a gritty new Alex Colthart video for the Munshine-produced track GG Allin from his forthcoming Run With The Creeps album with the following note:

100 compliments can be presented to you, but that 1 insult has the power to completely ruin your day. Two bloggers earned that small victory against me a few months ago. When critiquing my last album, Jonestown 2, explaining why my music shouldn't walk amongst the artists eventually short-listed for the Polaris Music Prize, they succeeded in throwing me off slightly with their jabs.
 

One called my writing 'uninspired' and 'lazy'. Said I relied solely on pop culture references and humor. There was no substance in my verses. He made me feel like an episode of the Family Guy. The other called my writing 'juvenile'. He was annoyed by the excessive foul language I used and felt my writing belonged in the hallways of a high school. Not out of the mouth of a 31 year old. He made me feel like Andrew Dice Clay.
 

Seth McFarlane is one of the highest earning writers for television. The Dice Man once sold out Madison Square Garden, selling millions of records in the comedy genre. Regardless, I'm neither of those. A handful of fans came to my defense, causing me to feel proud with a pinch of embarrassment. One of the bloggers took back a few of the jabs and said he'd check out my other music. I respect that. The other was...well, I didn't follow up. Probably twisting the whiskers of his beard, listening to an ambient record while writing another letter to a television network.
 

My new single, well...My first single from Run With The Creeps, GG Allin, is dedicated to them. Dedicated to, not inspired by. Dedicated to those who don't get what I'm trying to do. Not everybody will. Not everybody should. Not everybody will like it, and I understand that. I've been faced with much worse than those two bloggers. The scars and bruises in the video represent something. Apologies for not using the radio edit in the video.
 

My album release date has been pushed back one week. November 8th. One Week...Like that time Pacey Witter from Dawson's Creek and I rode our motorcycles around Canada because he had cancer. Pacy: We must have made a wrong turn. We're in New York! Derek: New York? Pacy: Yeah, the Big Apple! Derek: No. This is an apple pie shop off of the 401, you fucking idiot! Ohhhhhhhhh! There was never any doubt that some opportunistic hip-hop artist would turn the footage of violence and vandalism shot at the G20 protests in Toronto on Saturday afternoon into a viral video clip but by Sunday? Yep, while you were watching news anchors trying to get a handle on what was happening to "Toronto the Good," the latest images of burning police cruisers on Queen Street West were being edited into a new video to accompany the K-Dot-O-Dot track Critical Bill from his Arkeologists-produced Buckwheats album, which itself was recorded in just one day. K-Dot doesn't waste any time.




If you want to see what K-Dot-O-Dot can do in front of a crowd, he'll be ripping it live with Buck 65 & King Reign, The Von Drats and Timbuktu & Chokeules at the release party for D-Sisive's Vaudeville album set for the El Mocambo on Thursday, July 8.

D-Sisive's Cult Classic

 Love it or loathe it, there's no denying that the pitcher of Kool Aid makes for a provocative sleeve image on D-Sisive's new Jonestown (Urbnet) CD, released today (Wednesday, November 18) to coincide with the 31st anniversary of the Peoples Temple mass suicide in Guyana.
It's difficult to say what's more remarkable about the concept – the fact that something so innocuous as a fruity beverage has become a cultural signifyer for a horrifying grand-scale human tragedy or that capitalizing on such deeply troubling events in recent history to help sell a product is now considered to be an effective marketing strategy.
Whether the striking design of the Jonestown disc has a positive or negative consumer impact is something for the bean-counters to fret about. D-Sisive's never been overly concerned about how his twisted sense of humour is perceived any more than his sales numbers. Heck, he's giving away the album for free right here.
The surprisingly quick follow-up to his critically acclaimed Let The Children Die album, Jonestown is a welcome return to more of the punchline-style approach upon which our battle-ready boyo established his rep on the T.O. hip-hop scene. Way back in the 90s, before the whole mask thing, D-Sisive was masquerading as a gangly goofus in glasses that sucka MCs quickly learned not to test, especially if their girlfriend and/or crew happened to be watching in the audience.
While the 12-track album ain't all fun 'n' games, D-Sisive's fond reminiscence that is 1974 suggests the passing of his father still weighs heavy on his mind, he still packs in enough clever word-play wallop throughout Jonestown to shake off the unfortunate "emo-rapper" tag.
On point production from Marco Polo, Muneshine, MoSS, Anonymous Twist, Murr, Shinogo, 9th Uno and The Dirty Sample should help turn some headz and the kooky cameo from his electro-billy homeboy Slim Twig on Around The World is definitely good for a larf, much like the non-reference to Jeff Goldblum in They Got Guns. Yeah, it's dope.
