Buddy Guy launches his 90th birthday tour @ Massey Hall, Wednesday

Blues legend Buddy Guy turns 90 on July 30th but he's starting the celebration tonight in Toronto – 59 years after his first visit.

A true Canadian institution, ‪Blue Rodeo brings its sound to the stage once more in a dazzling concert at Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall. Instantly captivating the audience, the Canadian music legends kick off the evening as they deliver the opening notes of Rose-Coloured Glasses, quickly setting the tone for the night. 

It's the perfect union of two Toronto institutions: the legendary Massey Hall as the perfect backdrop for Jim Cuddy, Bazil Donovan and Greg Keelor’s vibrant, country-rock stage presence and show-stopping performance. Filled with immersive guitar and a rousing, nostalgic energy, the set takes the audience through the band’s impressive discography, diving into tracks from its debut album, Outskirts, to the seminal release Five Days In July. 

Performing some of their biggest songs as they move through the evening — including Head Over Heels, Bad Timing and Trust Yourself — Blue Rodeo effortlessly transitions from intimate moments shared with an enraptured audience to pushing the venue’s acoustic limits on uptempo hits such as Diamond Mine. From an incredible drum solo by Glenn Milchem to prelude 5 Days In May, to bringing out Adam Baldwin to close out the show with a spellbinding performance of Lost Together, the night comes to a peak as the crowd joins in for a show-stopping finale when the band plays out the final anthemic notes.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue tear up Massey Hall, Wednesday

New Orleans trombone blaster Trombone Shorty brings the Crescent City heat to Massey Hall tonight. Check the clips below.  

Here's the scoop...

Born Troy Andrews, Trombone Shorty got his start (and nickname) earlier than most: at four, he made his first appearance at Jazz Fest performing with Bo Diddley; at six, he was leading his own brass band; and by his teenage years, he was hired by Lenny Kravitz to join the band he assembled for his Electric Church World Tour. Shorty’s proven he’s more than just a horn player, though. Catch a gig, open the pages of the New York Times or Vanity Fair, flip on any late-night or morning TV show and you’ll see an undeniable star with utterly magnetic charisma, a natural born showman who can command an audience with the best of them.

Since 2010, he’s released five chart topping studio albums (his most recent being 2022’s Lifted); toured with everyone from Jeff Beck to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; collaborated across genres with Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Foo Fighters, ZHU, Zac Brown, Ringo Starr, and countless more; played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, Newport Jazz, and nearly every other major festival; performed four times at the GRAMMY Awards, six times at the White House, on dozens of TV shows, and at the star-studded Sesame Street Gala, where he was honoured with his own Muppet; launched the Trombone Shorty Foundation to support youth music education; and received the prestigious Caldecott Honor for his first children’s book.

Meanwhile in New Orleans, Shorty now leads his own Mardi Gras parade atop a giant float crafted in his likeness, hosts the annual Treme Threauxdown shows that have drawn guests including Usher, Nick Jonas, Dierks Bentley, Andra Day, and Leon Bridges to sit in with his band, and has taken over the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s hallowed final set, which has seen him closing out the internationally renowned gathering after performances by the likes of Neil Young, the Black Keys, and Kings of Leon.

In addition to touring across the globe nearly year-round, Trombone Shorty has started a very special tradition: a cultural exchange trip to Cuba with his Trombone Shorty Foundation. The fourth trip of his kind will take place in January of 2025, and includes an ever-expanding group of special guests artists who join Shorty and his Foundation to host workshops and play concerts in Cuba over a 5-day period, as well as nearly 100 students. 

Lifted, Trombone Shorty’s second release for Blue Note Records and 5th solo LP, was released in 2022. Recorded at Shorty’s own Buckjump Studio with producer Chris Seefried, the album finds the GRAMMY-nominated NOLA icon and his bandmates tapping into the raw power and exhilarating grooves of their legendary live show, channeling it all into a series of tight, explosive performances that blur the lines between funk, soul, R&B, and psychedelic rock. The writing is bold and self-assured, standing up to hard times and loss with grit and determination, and the playing is muscular to match, mixing pop gleam with hip-hop swagger and second line abandon. Wild as all that may sound, Lifted is still the work of a master craftsman, and the album’s nimble arrangements and judicious use of special guests—from Gary Clark Jr. and Lauren Daigle to the rhythm section from Shorty’s high school marching band—ultimately yields a collection that’s as refined as it is rapturous, one that balances technical virtuosity and emotional release in equal measure as it celebrates music’s primal power to bring us all together.

Beth Gibbons presents Lives Outgrown w/ Cass McCombs @ Massey Hall, Sunday

Portishead's Beth Gibbons brings the songs of her Lives Outgrown to life at Massey Hall tonight at 8 pm.  

Here's the scoop...

Lives Outgrown is, by some measure, Beth Gibbons' most personal work to date. She has never talked about the subject matter of any of her songs until now. She has never deployed backing vocals until now. The songs sit where her voice lives now. The album is the result of a period of sustained reflection and change — “lots of goodbyes,” in Beth’s words. Farewells to family, to friends, even to her former self. These are songs from the mid-course of life, when looking ahead no longer yields what it used to, and looking back has a sudden, sharper focus. “I realised what life was like with no hope,” says Beth. “And that was a sadness I’d never felt. Before, I had the ability to change my future, but when you’re up against your body, you can’t make it do something it doesn’t want to do.”

Other songs touch on motherhood, anxiety and the menopause (which Beth describes variously as “a massive audit” and “a massive comedown” which “cuts you at the knees”) as well as, inevitably, mortality. “People started dying,” says Beth. “When you’re young, you never know the endings, you don’t know how it’s going to pan out. You think: we’re going to get beyond this. It’s going to get better. Some endings are hard to digest.” But emerging from this decade of change and realignment has left Beth with what feels like a renewed purpose. “Now I’ve come out of the other end, I just think, you’ve got to be brave,” she says.
