Greg Prevost reunites with ex-Chesterfield Kings pals in Shitkicker Rebellion

Shitkicker Rebellion's Rick Cona and Greg "Stackhouse" Prevost just released their rippin' debut 45 on Penniman Records.  

Here's the scoop...

For Rochester's Greg "Stackhouse" Prevost, 2022 turned out to be an especially fruitful year for his “artistic pursuits.” Greg's memoir On The Street I Met a Dog was published just two weeks before the release of his album Vintage Violence. To properly celebrate this coincidence, a presentation was organized at the legendary House of Guitars in Rochester. For such a special event, a book signing was scheduled, spiced up with free pizza, a “party” atmosphere, and a small, unannounced live performance. Greg was joined by his “brothers” and former Chesterfield Kings members Rick Cona (bass), Paul Morabito (guitar), Zachary Koch (drums) and Ryan Moore (lead guitar, piano/organ) from the Low Spirits. The band performed five songs under the name The Shitkicker Rebellion. As expected, it was a blast, leaving both the artists and audience wanting more. Within a couple of weeks, they headed to the studio to record two songs from the brief live set with the idea of releasing a single. Greg Prevost's pre-Chesterfield Kings late 70s recordings revealed!

Well-timed to coincide with his new book, Chesterfield Kings frontman Greg Prevost gets his early recordings issued by Penniman.

Here's the scoop...

If you are a fan, you probably know that Greg Prevost played in different bands before forming the Chesterfield Kings. Only one of them, the Distorted Levels, released a 7" at the time, in 1978. But there were many more. You may have heard or read about mystery bands such as Mr. Electro & The Void, The Cutdowns, Mr. Electro and the Psychedelic Burnouts, etc. They all recorded profusely, but most master tapes eventually disappeared, in no less mysterious circumstances. Still, some recordings survived...and here you have a selection of this material: all demos, all previously unreleased, plus the Distorted Levels 7”, as well as five tracks (six on the CD format) recorded by the early Chesterfield Kings line-ups from 1978-79.

Gatefold sleeve, detailed track-by-track notes by Greg, including over 30 photos / press-clippings from his personal archive, and liner notes from Mike Stax (Ugly Things magazine), whose final verdict of this whole artifact could not be more exact: “Barbaric. Crude. Primitive. Beautiful".

One For The Weekend: Greg "Stackhouse" Prevost

Rochester's Chesterfield King Greg Prevost went on a blues bender in 2015 with Mississippi Murderer which you can temporarily download for free! 

Greg Prevost’s career is closely linked to the Chesterfield Kings, but his story does not begin nor end with this band. His beginnings took place in the early to mid-seventies as a singer and guitarist in combos such as Dr Electro & His Psychedelic Retards, Tar Babies, Distorted Levels, Cutdowns, etc, all of them abundantly recorded but minimally released in vinyl.

It has taken him 35 years to make a comeback (of sorts) not related to the Kings, in the shape of an acoustic blues 7” released six months ago and published by this company. Going solo proved to be an exciting experience, and the single was so well received that Prevost decided to wax some personal compositions with the addition of bass and drums. After a few rehearsals with a couple of good friends, he finally entered the studio. The result –cooked throughout several weeks of inspiration—is the album you have in your hands.

Mississippi Murderer (Penniman Records) is a true R’n’R artifact in which the artist seems to be settling scores with his recent past. A three-chord assault with plenty of excellent songs -the kind of numbers that most bands can only aspire to cover- sung by a truly unique voice, featuring plenty of attitude, splendid arrangements and slide guitar a go go. Influences? They come from Prevost’s personal obsessions: the Delta blues, a sound which lies midway between the Yardbirds and the NY Dolls, and, naturally, the Rolling Stones at their best. And these references are not a simple list of R'n'R greats nor the usual hype aimed at potential buyers but exactly what you will get in this record.
