Teenage Fanclub announce North American tour with Toronto date May 3!

Teenage Fanclub are scheduled to play the Concert Hall in Toronto on May 3. Tickets go on sale Friday, February 23.

Here's the scoop...

Jake Xerxes Fussell is a singer and guitarist based in Durham, NC. His latest album Good and Green Again was released by Paradise Of Bachelors to critical acclaim in January of 2022. The album was produced by British-born, Chicago-based songwriter/guitarist James Elkington (Richard Thompson, Steve Gunn, Joan Shelley, Freakons) and featured some formidable musicians, including Casey Toll on upright bass, Libby Rodenbough on strings, Joe Westerlund on drums, Joseph Decosimo on fiddle, and others. Bonnie “Prince” Billy contributed additional vocals.

Reigning Sound releasing live album for Record Store Day

Reigning Sound's limited-run RSD album cleverly titled Memphis In June is out Saturday, April 23. 

Here's the scoop...

Greg Cartwright and his rock 'n' roll holdouts in Reigning Sound are putting out the limited-edition Memphis In June album recorded at Harbor Town Amphitheatre in their hometown back in June of 2021. Merge is said to have pressed 2.970 copies of the 12-song LP on neon orange vinyl for release on Saturday April 23.

Richard Buckner decides to put out a seven-inch

Having been reasonably well served by the CD format for the past 18 years, singer/songwriter Richard Buckner has unexpectedly decided to jump into the Record Store Day fray with his first ever 7" single. Hey, all the kids are doing it.

Unlike many RSD releases which simply repackage previously issued material, Buckner's Merge label seven-inch features two good unreleased songs Willow and Lost which were recorded for the soundtrack of a film that was unfortunately shelved. In addition to the pair of non-throwaways, the limited edition 7" will include a download card for a bonus track: Buckner's version of The Cars' Candy-O with which he's been known to delight crowds of flannel-wearing folks who survived the 80s.

Check out the vibes-enhanced studio take of Willow (below), tastefully mixed by Jon Marshall Smith, followed by a clip of Buckner strumming the song solo on his trusty Harmony Hollywood for Boston's Sleepover Shows.

Indie Rock Stars Support Chris Knox

If you've been following the music coming out of New Zealand for the last few decades, you're probably aware of Chris Knox's important contribution to the development of Kiwi indie scene. The founder of the Enemy – Dunedin's first punk band – Knox went on to lead the highly-influential Toy Love and Tall Dwarfs who inspired groups like the Chills, Verlaines, The Bats and countless others who in turn began recording singles for the fledgling Flying Nun label using Knox's TEAC 4-track tape machine.
So when the 57-year-old singer/songwriter and cartoonist suffered a serious stroke at his Auckland home back in June, leaving him unable to speak, there was no shortage of artists eager to cut covers of Knox's songs for a tribute collection spearheaded by his friend and Nothing bandmate Roy Martyn.

Without any coaxing, Lou Barlow, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Jay Reatard, Yo La Tengo, Portastatic, Stephin Merritt, Lambchop and Bill Callahan each signed on along with David & Hamish Kilgour, Shayne Carter, Alec Bathgate, the Chills, Verlaines, the Bats and many others, enough for a two-disc set that's out now in New Zealand.
However, finding a label with decent North American distribution willing to sort out the licensing red-tape and release Stroke: Songs For Chris Knox and then put the proceeds from the sales towards Knox's rehabilitation wasn't quite so easy. Eventually Merge stepped up and will re-release the double-disc package here in February. But for those who can't wait, the music is now available (as MP3s or FLAC files) but if you pre-order the 2CD set, they'll send you a free digital download via email. Sweet.
