Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? screens at Paradise Theatre, Tuesday

William Klein's scathing look at the world of high fashion features iconic model Peggy Moffitt (left) who passed away in August.

Here's the scoop...

The Paradise Presents: MATERIAL GIRLS - a cinematic exploration of consumerism through a feminine lens. Join us for nine glossy pictures, with distinctive forms of pop sensibilities, that satirize and comment on the world in which we live.

We are starting our series in the world of high fashion with a double-feature starting with a deep dive into  Parisian haute-couture scene of the swingin' 60s with a rare screening of WHO ARE YOU, POLLY MAGGOO? the 1966 directorial debut of famed photographer William Klein.

After nearly a decade as American Vogue's most subversive fashion photographer, William Klein made this wild, pseudo-vérité incursion into the world of Parisian haute couture. Elegant, scathing humour ties together the various strands of this alternately glamorous and grotesque portrait of American in Paris Polly Maggoo (Dorothy MacGowan), an Alice in Wonderland supermodel who becomes the pinup plaything of media hounds with Philippe Noiret as a sweaty reporter and the fragmented fantasy of haunted Prince Igor (Sami Frey).

Klein's first fiction film is a daring deflation of cultural pretensions and institutions, dressed up in brilliant black and white featuring iconic 60s model Peggy Moffitt (who passed away on August 10, see our tribute here) alongside Donyale Luna, the first black supermodel in her film debut and famed fashion photographer Richard Avedon playing himself. The film also boasts an impressive score by Michel Legrand and some super crazy couture.
