Swiss garage rippers The Jackets cut new Intuition album with Jim Diamond

The Jackets' new Intuition album – boasting boffo sleeve art by Olaf Jens – is due out October 18 from Chaputa! Records.

Swiss garage punk sensations The Jackets are back with their highly anticipated new album, “Intuition”, available from October 18th on Chaputa! Records. Since forming in 2007 in Bern, The Jackets have been a driving force in the garage rock scene, known for their high-energy performances, raw sound, and infectious melodies. The band, featuring Jackie Brutsche (aka Jack Torera) on vocals and guitar, Chris Rosales on drums, and Samuel Schmidiger on bass, delivers a gritty mix of 60s garage rock, punk, and psychedelic influences.

The Jackets have garnered widespread acclaim for their music and electrifying live shows. Their previous albums have been celebrated, with “Shadows of Sound” praised by Shindig! magazine as a “perfect example of how modern garage-punk should sound,” and “Queen of the Pill” described by Louder Than War as “a blistering, fuzz-filled ride.” Their live performances are often highlighted for their “pure energy and charisma,” bringing the spirit of ’60s garage rock into the modern era.

New Bomb Turks' Nightmare Scenerio reissued with original Jim Diamond mix

"These are the original mixes I did without the band there to get in the way," sez Jim Diamond. "That's the best way to do it, hehe."

Here's the scoop...

It was spring, 1999. New Bomb Turks had just returned from their first tour of Australia in a suspended animation. They soon procured ace drumsman, dessert aficionado [not a typo], and all-around great guy, Sam Brown. It suddenly felt like a brand new beast, but they had an album to deliver forthwith, and nary a new song in sight! Nails were chomped to the cuticle, empty beer cans sat in the corner mocking us… 

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes (or at least like a bartender finding another unopened bottle of mezcal at last call), New Bomb Turks soared again. Within four months (May-August 1999), Sam slipped right into the NBT stool, 12 new songs were cooked up easy as fryin’ an egg, and they were back on the road with the Hellacopters to hash those new ones into place. 

By the time the band got to Jim Diamond’s Ghetto Recorders studio in Detroit – his rep revving up from production jobs with the curdled cream of that Detroit trash-rock scene (Clone Defects, Detroit Cobras, Dirtbombs, White Stripes, Andre Williams) – New Bomb Turks were piqued like a baby screamin’ for a higher push on a swing set. 

Over four days and nights, the band enjoyed their easiest and most fun recording session – the only break being a jaunt over to a bar to see a reunited Real Kids, their first show in years, which floored the band and only added more mezcal to the fire. 

Final mixes were left to Jim Diamond, and by the time he forwarded them to the band, overdub ideas had hatched, and about half the record was remixed with local studio wiz, Jeff Graham, in Columbus. A middle ground was eventually found, and what resulted was Nightmare Scenario (Epitaph Records, 2000) – the fifth album in their six album/three compilation catalog, and the one the band believe is their best. 

Like every band ever, the years have supplied moments of mixing rumination. So last year, when the band saw the 20th anniversary of Nightmare Scenario right up on their ass, they asked Jim Diamond if he had his original mixes lying around his palatial estate. He found them on a DAT (look it up, kids) tucked underneath a pile of professional recording deck manuals (i.e., old MAD mags). Lo and behold, they were even more ripping and burning and stinging than remembered. There was the 20th birthday idea, screamin’ like a brat! 

So here you have the original mixes of Nightmare Scenario that Jim Diamond finished in November 1999, ensconced deep in his legendary, now torn-down Detroit digs. Ain’t saying it’s better than the original, just leaner and meaner. But don’t take our word for it – take yours when you’re screamin’ along too!

Anyone who knows me well probably knows that "one of my guys" is musical icon Davie Allan aka the King of Fuzz Guitar. His albums, 45s and psycho collectible '60s soundtracks have been among the most exciting and influential discoveries in my life as a musician and yes, record collector. If you don't know him you probably do: the Wild Angels, Born Losers and Wild in the Streets soundtracks, the Arrows albums Cycle-Delic Sounds and Blues Theme and on and on. 

Today we announce the release of a DAVIE ALLAN & THE ARROWS / POW WOWS split 7" on Get Hip Recordings with cycle-delic art by Olaf Jens, linernotes from Phantom Surfers' guitarist Mel Bergman and mastering by Jim Diamond!! It is beyond an honour to now know Davie, to (unbelievably) become a small part of his incredible musical history and of course to dedicate to him our Canadian-history instro biker-anthem "Satan's Choice". Dreams do come true!!! Thank you Gregg, Barbara, Brian, Ryan, Jon, Steven, Olaf, Mel, Jim and the legend and coolest man in California, Davie Allan.

The Sonics release new song for RSD

Yes you heard that right and yes it is the 60’s garage rock band THE SONICS releasing an unheard track called "Bad Betty" on Muddy Roots Music Recordings. What can possibly make this sweeter? Adding "I Like It Small" by MUDHONEY to this 7” split sure the hell would! It will be available on Record Store Day (April 19, 2014) at participating independent retail stores.
So get your ass down to the local record shop and get a copy! This is a one time only pressing to add to your rare collection. Here's the Mudhoney track...

catl calling

Too delta dirty for indie rock hipsters and too uproarious reckless for the "Sweet Home Chicago" blues crowd, catl were in for a struggle to find an audience in Toronto for their forceful bash 'n' twang. And even though the White Stripes and Black Keys had proven that two determined people were sufficient to rock arena-sized crowds, there are obvious limitations to the guitar and drums set-up which Jamie "catl" Fleming and Johnny LaRue realized when recording their stormin' ¿Adónde Vas? A Ningun Lado (Coletrain) debut from last year. So they wisely hired vivacious vocalist/keyboardist Sarah Kirkpatrick from Shitt Hottt which has significantly bolstered their attack and added some tambourine-slapping excitement to their relatively static performances. 

You can hear the benefits on catl's new album, With The Lord For Cowards You Will Find No Place (Folk Brand Records) which, like their first, is issued on vinyl with a free CD version thoughtfully included. Although there are once again a couple of blues classics added to the mix, this time it's Lightnin' Slim's Excello burner Goin' Home and Charley Patton's Oh Death, all the shouting and wailing sounds more like a party than a funeral.
Of course, having half of the album's songs recorded and mixed by Detroit garage kingmaker Jim Diamond also appears to have had a significant impact on catl's sonic enhancement – not to discount the fine work done by Jeff McMurrich and James Anderson on the remaining tracks.
The bottom line is that catl have taken a step in the right direction with their new release which you'll better appreciate when they hit the Silver Dollar (486 Spadina) stage tonight (Friday, January 15). Those who can't make it should note that catl are also doing an in-store at Sonic Boom (512 Bloor West) on Saturday at 5 pm where admission is free but they ask that you bring a non-perishable food donation for the Daily Bread Food Bank. catl will also be sharing a bill with Bradley Boy at the Dakota Tavern (249 Ossington) on Friday, January 22.
