Markus Holkko shares Finnish boogaloo joint "Funky Ranking"

Jazzaggression is releasing just 50 copies of saxophonist Markus Holkko's "Funky Ranking" lathe-cut single.

From Markus Holkko's EYE OF THE UNIVERSE sessions comes something for the jockeys and dancers! "Funky Ranking" is a polished boogaloo shaker, intricately built around an infectious melody line. Accompanied by funky rhodes, sax, flute and a little swirlin organ, there is a vocal version and instrumental on this hand-cut lathe 45, and we only made 50 copies so these won't last long.

Second EP from Finnish jazz combo Oiro Pena due May 30

Finland's acclaimed JazzAggression label is releasing Antti Vauhkonen's 4-song Oiro Pena 2 EP as a 10" limited to 350 copies. 

Here's the scoop...
Finnish saxophonist/composer Antti Vauhkonen (Soft Power, Melufantti, Kasler Häsler) is back with 4 new tracks from his Oiro Pena collective, Vauhkonen handles most of the instrumentation but collaborates with J.Hulmi on piano and K. Koskenharju on bass, guitar, and percussion on two of the tracks. A well-balanced showcase of four instrumental songs, with the same energetic and subtle feeling as their first release. Listen to the snippets below followed by "Pritzch" from Oiro Pena's excellent s/t debut EP and the title track from Soft Power's new Brink of Extinction album.

DJ Fred Lavik spins Kenyan gems @ Turning Point, Saturday

DJ and record collector Fredrik Lavik – the man behind Soundway's Kenya Special compilation and Jazz Aggression's Quintonal retrospective – appears on the World Skip The Beat podcast to share some choice selections from his 20000+ collection of Kenyan 7" records. He is currently in Canada for a mini-tour that begins at Montreal's Canicule Tropicale on Friday (February 6) and continues in Toronto on Saturday (February 7) where he'll play a set at A Man Called Warwick's popular Turning Point party at The Garrison (1197 Dundas St. West).
