Rare Eero Koivistoinen live recording from Pori Jazz 77 gets recirculated

The well-recorded Eero Koivistoinen Quartet at Belmont Jazz Club captures the Finnish saxophone great blowing fire at his peak back in 1977.

Here's the scoop from Svart Records...

Eero Koivistoinen Quartet’s rare live performance at the Belmont Jazz Club from 1978 reissued for the first time in nearly half a century via Svart Records. Out today! Get it directly from Svart Records right here

Eero Koivistoinen is one of the all-time greats in Finnish jazz and saxophone, arrived in the Finnish jazz scene in the mid-60s. Ever since, he has been one of the most distinguished and trusted jazz musicians in Finland. He is known for his versatility and creativeness, his tastes ranging from pithy jazz solos to large-scale orchestral works.

In addition to the band leader and saxophonist Koivistoinen, the line-up of Eero Koivistoinen Quartet included the accomplished musicians Pekka Sarmanto (bass), Reiska Laine (drums) and Vladimir Shafranov (piano), and the same line-up remained active for the next two years. They released the legendary album Labyrinth on Love Records in June 1977, which is a definite cornerstone of Finnish Jazz.

The group also attracted the interest of the international tobacco company Philip Morris, which began to sponsor the quartet’s tours and clubs. One of these events took place at Pori Jazz in July 1977, where the band’s venue was named after Belmont, a brand of cigarettes manufactured by the company.

The Eero Koivistoinen Quartet was the house band of the Belmont Jazz Club at Pori’s Puistokeskus, and its concerts were recorded by the group’s sound engineer Matti Sarapaltio. The following year, Mikko Kuoppamäki and Koivistoinen compiled a live album At Belmont Jazz Club from recordings of four days of performances. The album, mixed by Pekka Nurmikallio at the renowned Microvox studio, was sent by the band’s frontman to Love Records, who released it in April 1978.

The price of the original vinyl release by Love Records has risen to several hundred euros over the years, so Svart Records is now easing the pain of many music lovers by releasing Eero Koivistoinen Quartet’s At Belmont Jazz Club today for the first time digitally and on CD, in addition to the three different vinyl editions. Check out two tracks from the album below.

Greg Foat teams up with Finnish saxophone great Eero Koivistoinen for Feathers

Legendary Finnish jazz saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen greatly enhanced Greg Foat's CTI-style Feathers album for Jazzaggression.

Here's the scoop...

British keyboardist Greg Foat recently traveled to Finland, teaming up once again with the Jazzaggression label to unveil “Feathers.” Building on the success of “Gone to the Cats,” the collaborative trio date with Aleksi Heinola and Teemu Åkerblom, “Feathers” follows a similar formula while expanding its musical horizons.

“Feathers” introduces an even larger cast of Finnish musicians, including the notable inclusion of Finnish saxophone legend Eero Koivistoinen on tenor saxophone and the talented Ilmari Heikinheimo on percussion. Recorded over a stormy long weekend in mid-October 2022 at Jazzaggression’s in-house Studio Pelto, the album strikes a balance between precomposed tracks and spontaneously created pieces.

Devotees of Greg’s earlier releases are in for a treat, as “Feathers” skillfully merges his signature atmospheric touch with an expanded synthesis of sounds. Imagine the legendary Eero Koivistoinen infusing his prowess into the monumental jam “Riding the Breeze,” while tracks like “Feathers” and the contemplative “A Prayer for Love” showcase a downtempo elegance that lingers in the air.

Yet, “Feathers” doesn’t stop there—it delivers captivating jazz classics as well. Experience “The Sandpiper,” a bluesy minor jam reminiscent of the golden era of CTI albums, or delve into the engaging rhythms of “Inconsequential Narrative” and the thematic intrigue of “As the Crow Flies.” A particularly enchanting aura envelops “When All Is Said and Done.” Its ephemeral minimalistic essence captures a spontaneous late-night allure, compelling the engineer to “Keep the tape rolling…”—the kind of magic that can only be conjured in the moment.

With “Feathers,” Greg Foat brings his animalistic trilogy of albums on Jazzaggression Records to a triumphant close, possibly delivering his most exceptional recording yet.

Album comes limited to 1000 copies, sealed with hype sticker and hold a coloured insert with photos documenting the recording, with info and digital download of album. Get a copy directly from Jazzaggression right here. Listen to some snippets via Soundcloud right here

Check out "In The Dog House" off Greg Foat's 2019 mini-album Gone To The Dogs and "Valley Of Black Cats" off 2021's Gone To The Cats album followed by a performance by the Greg Foat Group (with Rob Mach on tenor saxophone and Trevor Walker on trumpet) of "Bright As The Sun" off the Dark As The Sun album for Jazzman Records below.

Finnish jazz great Eero Koivistoinen strikes again with Diversity

The powerful new Diversity album by the Eero Koivistoinen Quartet is out now digitally with vinyl to follow in late October.

Here's the scoop from Svart Jazz...
The grand old man of Finnish Jazz, Eero Koivistoinen, has not kept still in his old age. Far from it, he's played with rappers from the younger generation, Argentinian tango singers, you name it. The Eero Koivistoinen Quartet, onto its 10th year in existence, is his outlet for what he knows by heart like no one else - cool quartet jazz in which Eero is aided by younger luminaries from the scene. Alexi Tuomarila is on the grand piano, Jori Huhtala on bass and Jussi Lehtonen on drums.

Diversity presents, as the title implies, a diverse selection of Koivistoinen's latest compositions plus a striking interpretation of the timeless Thelonius Monk classic Played Twice, here performed by tue duo of Koivistoinen and pianist Tuomarila.

Svart Records has released the Koivistoinen quartet's previous records as well, including Hati Hati (2015) which made it to the Finnish charts and Illusion (2017), Following the release of Diversity Koivistoinen proceeds to release his long-awaited autobiography.

Get a copy of Diversity right here. Check out a couple of tracks from the album along with  a recent live performance below.

Saxophone great Eero Koivistoinen heats up Nathan Francis session

Finnish tenor titan Eero Koivistoinen is featured heavily on the new Nathan Francis Quartet album out March 26th.

Here's the scoop...
Helsinki-based jazz bassist Nathan Francis steps up as a bandleader with his debut project Nathan Francis Quartet feat. Eero Koivistoinen. Together with a grade-A cast of Finnish musicians, the four-piece presents some of Nathan's favourite tunes from the standard repertoire (John Hicks, Cecil McBee & John Coltrane) as well as original compositions from members of the group. As Nathan puts it, "in terms of compositions, the group acts somewhat like a collective. We play compositions of each member but with an energy and interpretation that belongs completely to the moment."

Released on March 26th by Ajabu! Records, Francis' debut album features the Finnish jazz legend Eero Koivistoinen on tenor saxophone. "Eero has given immensely to the jazz scene here in Finland and abroad. He carries a sound that is so deep and intense. I feel he is the perfect fit for this band", the young bassist explains. Koivistoinen has also composed two songs for the album, the soulful opening track "Minor Solution" (listen below) and the bluesy track entitled "Late Show." Markus Niittynen plays the piano and drummer Aleksi Heinola mans the drum seat. The former has also composed the album's third track "Crystal Clear" and the latter is well known as the inspired leader of his own quintet.

Now settled in Helsinki, Nathan's primary wish was to form a "cross generational band as a tribute to his musical ancestors," a testament to the character of this young jazz musician. In his own words, Nathan says "meeting Finnish jazz legend, Eero Koivistoinen, sealed the deal", and this eloquent musical project came to its fruition at the studios of the Sibelius Academy.

Nathan started music from an early age and attended music classes in his hometown of Portland, Oregon at Portland State University while in high school. It was at this time that Nathan began studying jazz at the Alan Jones Academy of Music. In Portland, Nathan studied with Chuck Israels, Alan Jones, Jon Lakey, Chris Higgins, and Jason Schooler of the Oregon Symphony. Through these mentors and many more Nathan began growing the skills necessary to be a musician. Nathan also attended the Centrum Jazz Workshop and the Stanford Jazz Workshop where he met many jazz greats that would solidify his love for the music. After time spent in San Francisco at the San Francisco Conservatory, Nathan moved to Helsinki to study at the Sibelius Academy of Music and participate in the growing Helsinki arts scene.

Nathan has performed with Randy Weston, Peter Bernstein, and Ron Steen and has attended masterclasses with other jazz luminaries such as Dana Hall and Julian Lage. Nathan currently continues his journey in Helsinki where he is an active part of the Jazz scene. He maintains a busy performing and touring schedule while studying at the Sibelius Academy of Music.
