R.I.P. producer/manager, music historian and cable-TV host Art Fein

Sadly, Art Fein, host of Art Fein's Poker Party and rock 'n' roll's best friend has passed away. He'll be greatly missed!

Dave Alvin remembers Art Fein
Extremely sad hearing of the passing of Art Fein.

There is so much to say about Art. A music journalist, a  passionate (though always nicely cynical) true believer in rock and roll, rockabilly and other raw creations, a sometime band manager/advocate for The Cramps, The Blasters and other notable groups, a public access television host (check out his old Little Art's Poker Party shows on YouTube), a sneaky photographer and a complicated friend. I'll save the details for the eventual memoir but for now, I'll just say a belated, sincere thank you to Art, for everything he did for The Blasters and me.

Back in the early days of The Blasters, when few outside of Rollin' Rock Records knew or cared who we were, Art cared deeply.

In late 1979/early 1980, I was a wannabe poet working as a fry cook in Long Beach. I was also a clumsy guitar basher in a R&B combo from Downey who was beginning to write songs for my brother to sing. One of those songs was called Marie Marie.

Long story short: Art Fein played Marie to a Welsh rock and roll singer named Shakin' Stevens, who quickly recorded my song and made it into a huge international hit (everywhere except the USofA). Thanks to Art Fein (and the ensuing BMI royalty checks), I was soon able to quit my job as a cook and pursue music.songwriting and rockin' n' rollin' full time.

I can never, ever thank you enough for all you did for me, Art. Especially for ending my career as a fry cook.
Rock In Peace! - Dave Alvin

Remembering Australian vibraphonist Alan Lee on his birthday

Remembering Aussie vibes ace Alan Lee on his birthday with a few of his swingin' tunes kindly recirculated by Jazzman Records.

Alan Lee – An Australian Jazz Anthology (Jazzman)
There are few Australian originals in jazz, though vibraphonist Alan Lee surely ranks alongside the best. Australian jazz is and always will be an interpretation of the American art form, but throughout his long career Lee has ploughed his furrow undaunted, What I want is the fire! Whether it's John Coltrane's Blues Minor from Africa Brass or Backwater Blues by Leadbelly, I want the emotion, the gut wrenching pain, the cry from within!

These are uninhibited words. A musician and bandleader who cut a number of jazz sides for small independent Melbourne labels from the early 1960s to the mid-1970s, Lee has always searched for this fire, evident in the broad styles he's covered throughout his career, and which we have attempted to explore here, the first and only collection of music from Alan Lee.

From '60s soul jazz, to the deep modal sounds of the early '70s and cross-genre experiments exhibited in his chamber jazz, Lee's personal life has been as varied and explorative as his music, a journey that has taken him beyond the thresholds of jazz improvisation and spiritual awareness.

The tracks that feature on this anthology were recorded by various incarnations of Lee's band and are taken from across three albums recorded between 1973 and 1974. These albums represent the sole output in LP format that can be credited to Lee as band leader, and all are collectors' items in their own right. The deep modal version of Love Song and Freddie Hubbard's perennial spiritual jazz standard Little Sunflower are both taken from the self-titled LP 'Alan Lee Jazz Quartet'.

The album 'Gallery Concerts 1973', which was recorded for Bruce Clarke's jazz sub-label Cumquat Records, provides us with a fierce electric-jazz version of Igor Stravinsky's The Rite Of Spring: Dance Of The Adolescents plus the plaintive chamber jazz of John Lewis' Sketch as well two tracks featuring vocalist Jeannie Lewis; Bachianas Brasileiras No.5 and the beautiful Bailero in which Lee exchanges the vibraphone for the conductors role in presiding over a jazz trio accompanied by a seven piece concert ensemble. Completing this compendium is a track taken from the 1974 follow-up recording for Jazznote, the album titled 'The Smilor'; included is a cover of the Milt Jackson-penned Enchanted Lady.

What you are hearing on this album is the story of one man's travels, a journey within a foreign art form but also a journey within himself. Illustrated in the stories Lee shares, such as his correspondence with fellow vibraphone player Gary Burton on how to achieve advanced extended techniques for the vibraphone (resulting in pages of technical diagrams) or travelling across the US to purchase an original 1940s Deagan Imperial Vibraphone from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 'Just to get that Milt Jackson sound'. There are moments of deep introspection and intellect in Lee's playing, emotional music that contains and shares a common spiritual oneness, seeking the thrill he experienced after first listening to Lionel Hampton and the Benny Goodman Quartet. The emotion, the gut wrenching pain, the cry from within.

Get a copy of Jazzman's Alan Lee collection An Australian Jazz Anthology via Bandcamp right here. Listen to a few tracks below.

New Bomb Turks, The Drowns & Fluffio rock the Horseshoe, July 29

Eric Davidson and his Columbus punk crew New Bomb Turks promise a whumpin' good time and never fail to deliver! Check the clips below.

New Bomb Turks still rockin' with ferocity
NBT at CBGBs in '93 by Shawn Scallen
Watching the footage of the New Bomb Turks tearing it up for the hometown crowd at Ace Of Cups (see below) reminds me of the first time I saw Eric Davidson and his Columbus attack unit in action at the New Music Seminar in New York City way back in 1993.

They were last on a multi-band showcase bill at CBGBs where many of New York's Lower East Side music celebs – including Sonic Youth's Kim & Thurston, Pussy Galore's Jon & Christina, among others – had gathered to see Guided By Voices play their first ever show outside of Ohio. Word was that they hadn't played a show in six years so no one knew what to expect including Mike D. from the Beastie Boys who was intrigued by what he'd heard on a mixtape put together by Matt Sweeney culled from GBV's self-released recordings to date.

"From the tape I heard," chuckled Mike D. shaking his head, "it sounded like maybe four or five different bands. I'm curious to see which one of 'em shows up tonight." Although I had a couple of their albums, I was no more up on their recent activities than anyone else. But I suggested that it might be worthwhile to hang around for New Bomb Turks set afterwards. "New Bomb who?" he shot back, "no idea."

By the time GBV played their final tune, it was around 2:30 am and Mike D. along with the rest of the assembled glitterati had checked out long before. Quite a few folks split during the lengthy change over and it was now close to 3 am but Ottawa-based photographer Shawn Scallen, my future Now Magazine colleague Matt Galloway and I were determined to see what the fuss was about.

The way Eric Davidson and his slouchy NBT crew sauntered on stage, it looked as though this might not be their night. But from the first snare drum crack, a switch seemed to flip and suddenly, they were blasting away full tilt. Davidson wound the microphone cord tightly around his clenched fist and began shouting with confrontational ferocity, mugging and strutting comically during the thrashy guitar breaks then continuing to spit fire one song right into the next.

The remaining spectators – which minutes before were wandering semi-comatose looking ready for a snooze – rushed to the stage and coalecsed into a heaving mosh pit. As anyone who has ever attended a music conference in Manhattan will tell you, that's definitely not something you typically see at these kind of events which are usually filled with jaded journalists, disinterested publicists and bored label reps, managers, agents and musicians – particularly not for a relatively unknown band at 3 am.

Just as I turned to see if Shawn was getting this crazy action on film, a horizontal Davidson floated by me on the left, being passed around on the outstretched hands of the sweaty crowd. still hollering away while looking up at the ceiling. That's what you get when you go to a New Bomb Turks show. Check the clips below.

Frank Nevada, Steve Koch & John Borra play The Boneheads @ Bell & Beacon, Saturday

Frank Nevada and Steve Koch get back together with John Borra to play a few of their Boneheads faves on Saturday from 4 pm to 6 pm. Check the clips.

Writes Steve Koch...

"Is there life on Mars?  Not sure you'll find out but just in case, you may want to drop by the Bell and Beacon (1648 Queen St. West) next Saturday from 4 to 6 where John Borra Frank Nevada and myself play the greatest hits of our old band the Boneheads.

"The Boneheads existed with a few lineup changes from 1987 into the early 90's and were part of the Queen West music explosion of that time along with Groovy Religion, the Lawn, Scott B Sympathy, Saturnalia and so many other cool bands.

"We did short, sharp, sarcastic and perfect pop songs (think Nick Lowe) along with a few sprawling loosely structured jams where Frank could expound clever stream of consciousness thoughts about pretty much anything.

"It was alot of fun and these songs are too good to be forgotten, so as the song says - why not try again?"

Adds Steve...

"A few people have been asking about who were the Boneheads so let's give credit where it's due:  Frank Nevada - our fearless leader through the whole sordid affair. Rene Frattura (Herald Nix, Handsome Neds), Pete Richards and Glen Bidmore (Cads) in the first lineup. Don Kerr, Marty Lake (One Free Fall) and yours truly in the next round. John Borra (A Neon Rome) stepped up when Marty left.

"Ron Duffy (Change of Heart) took over the drum duties when Don moved on to other projects.  Drew Atkins totally rocked the bass for a period while John was away.  And lets not forget our great friends 'Echo' Dave Richards and Walter Sobczak who were involved in the first two recordings. On Saturday (July 26), it's Borra/Koch/Nevada at the Bell and Beacon.  Come on down!"

Check out some vintage Boneheads footage below along with this recent performance clip.
