Another unissued album from Suicide's Alan Vega appears, new biography on the way

Alan Vega's Insurrection album is out now via In The Red and the Infinite Dreams biography will be published June 18th.

Here's the scoop...

A new, previously-unreleased album from Alan Vega entitled Insurrection, produced and mixed by Jared Artaud and Liz Lamere has just been released by In The Red Records (you can get it right here). Vega’s name is synonymous with uncompromising creativity, from the late 1950s, through his years playing in Suicide, and all the way up until his death in 2016, Vega was constantly creating. This process inevitably led to a wealth of material that didn’t see the light of day immediately when it was recorded, which came to be known as the Vega Vault. Insurrection is the second in a series of archival releases from the Vault that follows 2021’s lost album, Mutator (Sacred Bones). Insurrection was recorded with his longtime collaborator and wife Liz Lamere and discovered in the Vault in 2022 by both Lamere and Vega’s close friend, producer and confidante Jared Artaud (The Vacant Lots). Soon after they mixed and produced the songs into the visionary album that was lurking within the archival ADAT tapes.

Co-producer and mixer of Insurrection, Jared Artaud says: “There is a vast amount of material in the Alan Vega Vault, and continuing to discover new unreleased songs in the archives with Liz Lamere is both shocking and surreal. Half the time I feel like a producer and the other I feel like some kind of archeologist. It was an incredible experience working on Insurrection and continuing to produce, mix, and curate Vega’s music as well as his artwork. Mutator and Insurrection both required a lot of time to dig through the tracks, arrange, and finish them all. There are a number of artistic decisions that go into putting these albums together and my objective with Vega’s material is always to curate and finish the work in a way that Alan would have been proud of. When Alan told me that “I am ending, you’re beginning, I’m passing down the torch to you” I took that very seriously. We made a pact before he died and I am living up to that to this day with maximum loyalty.”

On the new album, Vega's longtime creative ally and Insurrection co-producer Liz Lamere adds: "Insurrection was created circa 1997/98, after Mutator, and prior to Vega’s release of “2007” in 1999. It captures the intense energy of NYC in the 90s rife with crime, killing, hate, fascism, racism, and moral bankruptcy. You can hear the tortured souls floating through this album. Post-Gulf War angst and premonitions of terrorist attacks in our homeland enveloped Alan. The upcoming birth of his son raised further awareness of the state of our world. All these emotions are mirrored in the sounds he magnetized. Yet, true to Vega form, there remains hope and empowerment coursing through the tracks. In the nearly three decades in the studio with Vega, we recorded significantly more material than the seven albums released. Vega’s intention was to experiment with sound which would become the canvas for the poetry that reflected his vision of the universe. Often full sessions would be spent creating a single sound. Because the goal wasn’t to make albums, he had no timeline or constraints and would freely follow new paths uncovered along the way.”

The visual artist, musician, and poet Alan Vega was born in Brooklyn in 1938. He co-founded the massively influential avant-garde band Suicide with Martin Rev in 1970, with whom he performed off and on throughout his life. Suicide’s groundbreaking debut album was included among Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and it was a formative work in the invention of synth-punk, post-punk, art rock, industrial music and is considered one of the most influential albums of all time.

Vega would go on to have a prolific career as a solo artist. His hit song “Jukebox Babe” led to a contract with Elektra Records, who released two albums including the cult classic Saturn Strip, produced by Ric Ocasek. From there, rejecting the commercial machine, he went back to his roots, doing a deep dive into experimenting with sound in the studio. This era resulted in new solo records coming out consistently throughout the next several decades; starting with Deuce Avenue, continuing through Dujang Prang (on Henry Rollins' 2.13.61 imprint), and culminating with his masterpiece It. Vega considered the albums from this period the audio counterpoint to his visual art that reflected the world around him while simultaneously delving into universal themes. It makes his work as relevant today as it was then.

It was during this period that he began working with Liz Lamere, who became his wife and the most crucial collaborator of his solo career. Lamere, along with fellow Vega collaborator Jared Artaud discovered in 2019 the lost Vega album, Mutator, which they co- produced and mixed. The 11 songs on Insurrection showcase the unparalleled vision and uncompromising force from one of the most influential artists of all time.

Lamere and Artaud spearhead the Vega Vault project, which aims to bring rare, unreleased and back catalog work spanning Alan Vega and Suicide’s career to the public for the first time. Lamere says. “After Alan and I worked on the split 10" single for Alan Vega's "Nike Soldier" and The Vacant Lots’ ("Mad Mary Jones" Alternate Mix) followed by the remix of The Vacant Lots "6 AM" track, Alan spent many hours with Jared discussing music, art, philosophy. Knowing there was so much more recorded material in the Vault, Vega believed Jared and I would make a great team producing this music and building his legacy.”

Recently, Jared Artaud co-produced alongside Hedi Slimane the exclusive soundtrack - an extended mix of Suicide's "Girl" - for Celine's Le Palace FW23 runway show, released The Vacant Lots fifth full-length album Interiors, and is currently co-curating a new Alan Vega art exhibition, Cesspool Saints, on view through July 27, 2024 in Paris at Laurent Godin Gallery.

A new biography "Infinite Dreams - The Life of Alan Vega,” co-written by Liz Lamere and Laura Davis-Chanin, with a foreword by Bruce Springsteen, will be published on June 18 by Backbeat Books. Pre-order it right here.  and Lamere will be releasing her second solo album, “One Never Knows”, on June 14 via In The Red Records. Singer/songwriter David Picco launches Until Now album @ Cameron House, Thursday

St. John's singer/songwriter David Picco presents songs from his 7th album "Until Now" at the Cameron House tonight at 9 pm.

Here's the scoop...

Canadian singer/songwriter David Picco previews his new album Until Now – out today, Thursday, May 30th – with the single "Still Doubt It" (listen below), a funky slice of classic roots rock that exemplifies the sound Picco has honing for the past decade. The song is available now on all digital platforms and Bandcamp.

Much of Picco's journey is chronicled on Until Now, 10 songs with lyrics steeped in hard-earned life lessons. Working with a tight crew led by guitarist Jimmy Bowskill of The Sheepdogs and Blue Rodeo (who also engineered Until Now at his Ganaraska Recording Co. in Cobourg, Ontario), Picco and his additional supporting players—Ian McKeown on drums and pedal steel, and Steve O’Connor of the Jim Cuddy Band on keyboards—blazed through four days of sessions in Spring 2023 with the result being an album that runs the gamut of emotions.

A native of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Picco has recently been splitting his time between Toronto and Austin, Texas, trying to make sense of all that’s happened to him. “Some of these songs are the most personal I’ve ever written,” he says. “They came out of dealing with the passing of my best friend and the end of my marriage. But I wanted the album to have a light-hearted side as well, and I kept writing pretty much up until we were ready to record. There are some spontaneous moments that I love when the band really cut loose. I also wanted to record Townes Van Zandt’s ‘Still Lookin’ For You,’ which we did off the cuff and it ended up fitting in perfectly.” Have a listen below.

The album’s rocking side is best displayed on “Still Doubt It,” with its instantly memorable chorus and swampy groove punctuated by Picco cutting loose on a fuzzed out guitar solo. But the overall theme of Until Now is summed up on the title track, which closes out the record. Overtop a Faces-esque loose-limbed backing, Picco sings, “I don’t know if I went wrong, but heaven knows it won’t be long / I never said that I was strong – until now.”

“That song is about hitting the road and moving on, with or without regrets,” Picco says. “This is my seventh album, so I’ve gained lots of experience as a songwriter and recording artist. The last five years in particular have been a pretty creative time for me and I’ve been able to come into my own with help from the people I’ve worked with. I really feel that this is my best batch of songs to date.”

Indeed, Until Now builds on the foundation of Picco’s previous album Live It Down from 2021, which earned rave reviews from all corners of the Americana world. Having paid his dues within the Canadian music scene since the mid-2000s, David Picco has merely been biding his time in the shadows of this country’s best singer/songwriters—until now.

DMZ's classic 4-song Bomp! EP from '77 gets recirculated by Munster Records

Here's the scoop...

A chaotic and intense Craig Leon-produced hybrid of Dolls, Stooges and most of the Nuggets bands by Jeff ‘Mono Mann’ Conolly’s pre-Lyres group DMZ then featuring guitarists J.J. Rassler and Peter Greenberg, bassist Rick Corraccio, drummer Paul Murphy and of course, Mono Mann on Vox Continental organ, vocals, maracas and tambourine.

Unavailable for over three decades, Spain's Munster Records has just reissued this garage rock’s essential gem, originally released in the early days of Greg Shaw’s Bomp! label.

Bomp! Records of Burbank, California was likely the most significant American independent record label of the 1970s. It was the first in this country to recognize and actively support the punk rock and new wave revolution with its releases, at a time when both America’s vast regional disparity and an extremely conservative record business had deemed this new, strange idiom anathema. In its first five years Bomp! the label wore its heart on its sleeve with a series of fascinating, unpredictable, and memorable 45 RPM releases. And the whole was brainstormed by Greg Shaw, likely the only maverick alive at that time who could have created and populated such a scenario.

The winter 1976 issue of Who Put The Bomp (Greg Shaw’s fanzine) had featured a detailed report on the Boston scene, with favorable mentions of two future Bomp! acts. Willie ‘Loco’ Alexander was a local legend, the storied former lead singer of the Lost, and his 1975 single ‘Kerouac’ (reissued on Bomp!) was a suitably eccentric, Dylan-ish ode to the beat maven. DMZ was a more predictable proposition, sporting obvious glam roots and an eccentric but dedicated rock & roll fan in lead singer, Jeff ‘Mono Mann’ Conolly.

Conolly and crew went for a chaotic and intense hybrid of Dolls, Stooges and most of the Nuggets bands, so Bomp! the label was a natural choice. With killer cuts like ‘Busy Man’ and ‘When I Get Off,’ their Craig Leon-produced 1977 EP captured the DMZ zeitgeist considerably better than the album they would later record for Sire.

Toronto's Genevieve Marentette toasts Bob Dylan on his 83rd birthday

Check out Genevieve Marentette's version of Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" and Nick Drake's "River Man"

Here's the scoop from Gigi...
"On Bob Dylan's 83rd birthday, I’m sharing my cover of  'Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You,'  from his legendary 1969 album Nashville Skyline.

"This song is a dedication to my darling flame of 5 years, my long-term dalliance, or LTD as I like to call 'em, who wrote me this beautiful bit:
“Like all of us, Dylan can hear the ominous blast of the station master’s whistle. The train will inevitably leave the station. Love may not endure forever. Dylan may be singing about love that lasts a day, a week, or even a lifetime. The train is always readying to leave the station. The choice is always ours: punch our ticket or throw it out the window. Genevieve still sings this song to her lover on occasion, but sometimes, she tosses her suitcase back onto the train.”
"Joining me in this tribute is a stellar lineup, including Christine Bougie on lap steel, Vezi Tayyeb on keys, Eric St-Laurent and Jono Grant on guitars, George Koller on bass, Ben Wittman on drums, and Lori Cullen on background vocals. Together, we've created a sonic tribute reminiscent of "The Band". This rarely-covered song is the third single from my series of songs from 1969. Previous releases include recordings of Nick Drake’s 'River Man' and King Crimson’s 'I Talk to the Wind,' with more to come."

Listen to Gigi's versions of "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You," "River Man" and "I Talk To The Wind" below.

About Genevieve
Genevieve “Gigi” Marentette is a fixture in the Toronto music community. She was born in Leamington, Ontario, known affectionately as Tomato Town. Her father is a farmer, and her mother is a musician and social activist. As a child, Genevieve bounced around the north and south of Ontario - living communally and creatively. That upbringing helped nurture her free-spirited soul - full of saudade - and also her love of community - full of duende.   Genevieve spent her formative teen years in Detroit, where her family roots go back 265 years. She credits her unique artistry to her mom, @lindagirard and Detroit's rich musical history. After completing a college jazz diploma in Toronto, she travelled and performed extensively in Asia and Europe. Genevieve, or Gigi as her peeps call her, calls Toronto her home. Gigi has worked with Marc Houle, Theo Parrish, Recloose, David Clayton-Thomas, Jane Siberry and others.
