I would like to talk about a Toronto Musician Mike Malihini Scott.

He was a Steel guitar player who was born in England, lived in Toronto and played Hawaiian Music.

Mike was influenced by the sweet sounds of the steel guitar that he first heard on a record by British recording artist Felix Mendelsson featuring steel guitarist Roland Peachey when he was a teen in England. The song was 'In the Mood'.

While still a teen he found a local guitarist who taught him steel guitar. He took about 10 lessons and then studied on his own. Soon after he had learnt to play well enough to join the local dance bands in his hometown area of Wiltshire England.

He became the steel guitarist with Bill Stones Hawaiian band for three years and then led his own group the Hawaiian Islanders for another 4 years. After moving to Canada in 1954, he formed the Hawaiianaires. Mike was the band leader and the steel guitarist for the Hawaiianaires. He was given the nickname 'Malihini' ...a hawaiian word meaning 'a newcomer' to Hawaii.

The group became the top Hawaiian band in the Toronto area and was featured on cross-Canada network TV shows in the late 50's.

Mike recorded 6 albums and also wrote many songs during his career.

His musical legacy continues as his song 'Pua Nani o Hawaii' recorded in 1979 was used in the 2015 film 'American Ultra' starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristin Stewart .It was also used in a couple of episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Mike retired in 2014 and sadly passed away yesterday at the age of 94. Mike Scott is my father.
