Legendary calypsonian is marking his 85th birthday with Live At 85! recorded in action at Joe's Pub in NYC last December. |
In celebration of his 85th birthday today, Mighty Sparrow is releasing Live At 85! – a brand-new live album, recorded at Joe's Pub in New York City a few weeks before Christmas 2019. The 13-track set features a fully fired up Sparrow running through twelve choice selections from his enormous catalog – along with his own spin on "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" – before an appreciative crowd. The excitement of this rare night is palpable on every track of this historic recording.
Three tracks are available for single download purchase: Mr. Walker, Sparrow Dead, and No Money No Love. The rest can be streamed but are only available for download with the full album purchase. "The Mount Olympus of Calypso ... It's not just the good Calypso I like. I like the naughty stuff too, you know. My aides didn't understand the lyrics, and they were too dirty for me to translate." – Gen. Colin Powell (Ret.)
"As far as concept and intelligence and warring with words, Mighty Sparrow was and probably still is the king ... his shows are like prize fights and he always comes out on top, all this and a fifteen or twentypiece band just blasting away ... he's fantastic." – Bob Dylan, as quoted by Cameron Crowe, on the Biograph box set notes
