The Portland soul of Shirley Nanette
Back in the early 70s, guitarist Hank Swarn had been on the road for fi ve years with Earl Grant's touring combo when he decided to record some of his own material at Ripcord Studios in Vancouver, Washington with the support of some talented local musicians – including organist Billy Larkin, Roy Eldridge sideman saxophonist George Lawson – along with jazz vocalist Shirley Nanette.
The resulting album, Never Coming Back, was finished in a little over a week and issued by the tiny Portland, Oregon-based Satara label back in 1973. Only 500 copies were pressed at the time which is probably why you haven't come across it at your local record shop. Thank the fine folks at Truth & Soul and Magnetic Recordings for having the good sense to re-release two of the album's best tracks as a limited-run single.
All of Your Life is a psychedelic dance floor heater that sounds like Marlena Shaw singing over a lost Jimi Hendrix instrumental. The flipside, People Are Thinking showcases Shirley Nanette’s belting power as she soars over an uptempo backing track with Ethio-style horn melodies snaking around a stone-solid soul bump.

Endless Boogie announce new album
On February 19th, Endless Boogie release their 3rd studio album Long Island recorded this past summer in Brooklyn. So far we know it's 8 tracks and clocks in at 79 minutes, so par for the course then.
The group's No Quarter label offering a special Long Island pre-order bundle through their online shop which includes an exclusive bonus 12" and a nice looking 18x24 poster with the purchase of the Long Island CD or 2xLP version. The limited-run 12" includes a 13-minute number called "Rollin & Tumblin" cut during the Long Island sessions but left off due to time constraints. There's a live jam on the flip recorded at WFMU. The word is that only 400 were pressed so don't sleep. Check out the album's Stonesy first track Taking Out The Trash...

Midweek Mixdown: Liam Large (Jukebox Jam)
Here's a brilliant mix of vintage Cubano corkers, calypso heat and swinging R&B blasters assembled by Liam Large (Jukebox Jam) for the excellent Sofrito site. If you like what you hear then you really need to grab a copy of Liam's stone-solid Jukebox Mambo (Jazzman) collection of 1950s-era Afro-Cuban flavoured R&B groovers on the double. Spoiler alert: It's going to place near the top of The Perlich Post's Reissues of 2012 list. Check out Liam's mix which duplicates only two tracks from his killer comp now available on iTunes
