Perhaps he saw how horribly Mick's attempt at comedy went and decided to stay at the hotel and watch the 'Canes take apart the Flyers in Philly instead.

For Candi Staton’s latest album “Back To My Roots;” the soul legend has recorded a sensational set of songs that draw heavily upon her gospel roots.

It is best to let this great lady of soul speak for herself: “This album was recorded over several years. We took our time. I planned for it to be my last full album, so it was a labor of love and a family affair. My son Marcus produced, mixed and mastered it. My daughter Cassandra runs our label and kept all the business straight. My son Marcel came up with the bass line for ‘1963.’ My sister Maggie Peebles joined me for two songs we sang as kids. My British bandleader, Ernie McKone, cut ‘Shine A Light’ in London, which is only right considering it’s a Rolling Stones classic.

Mark Nevers, who produced some of my past Americana albums, stepped in to do some sweetening on certain tracks. Guitar great Jonathan DuBose Jr gave ‘I Missed the Target Again’ new life. Blues great Larry McCray added some zing to 'Hang on in There'.

My longtime friend William Bell was the perfect person to sing ‘My God Has A Telephone’ with me. I’d just like to thank my other sons, Terry and Clarence Jr for their support.”

Staton’s voice has always been a powerful and emotive instrument and on this album it has never sounded finer. No wonder “Back To My Roots” was nominated for Best Gospel Album at the 2026 Grammys, her first nomination in 40 years!

R.I.P. Stanley Booth, 1942-2024

Music journalist Stanley Booth, who brilliantly chronicled the Rolling Stones and Furry Lewis, has died at 82. He'll be greatly missed.

Informed sources say that writer Stanley Booth has died in Memphis.

Sometimes all you need to do is leave a single book behind. Booth -- seen below pointing his shotgun in your face on the dusk jacket of his book “Rythm Oil" -- left one the size of a continent: his 1984 book originally titled “Dance With the Devil: The Rolling Stones & Their Times” and later retitled “The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones.” (Booth was annoyed that his publisher also used the title for a novel, by the actor Kirk Douglas.) It depicted, close up, the band’s fateful 1969 tour, which climaxed at Altamont, so intimately that it instantly rendered any other effort on the subject slight; it also delved deeply into the group’s history, and into Brian Jones’ sad fate. It was a work of personal journalism; the writer is as important a character as Keith Richards, whom he befriended over the course of his reporting. I bought it the week it came out, bought each succeeding edition of it, and bought used hardback copies to give to my friends. Best book on the Stones, best book on rock ’n’ roll, best book spawned by the inheritors of the New Journalism.

Booth managed to publish other books — an elongated version of his Playboy interview with Keith, "Rythm Oil" and its successor collection "Red Hot and Blue" — and the writing was invariably fine, flawless, funny. It is a marvel they appeared at all, for Booth was a reckless and hard-living man who cheated Death for decades. But he was claimed today, at the age of 82. You can talk about the others, those figures now passed like Bangs and Palmer, or the ones still living. Stanley Booth had no true peer among the observers of the music’s long dark trail. He was the pistol.

Guitar slinger Harvey Mandel returns with "Who's Calling"

Who's Calling is innovative guitarist Harvey Mandel's second album for Tompkins Square.

Here's the scoop...

Harvey Mandel is among the most innovative guitarists to emerge from the Chicago blues scene of the late 1960s. His career began at Twist City and other local hotspots, sharing stages with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Buddy Guy. He came up in that scene alongside Charlie Musselwhite, Mike Bloomfield, Barry Goldberg and Steve Miller, leading to an invitation from Bill Graham to open for Cream at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium in August 1967. 

Mandel was a member of Canned Heat, appearing with them at Woodstock. He played on numerous John Mayall albums, and on the Rolling Stones' 1975 LP Black and Blue ("Hot Stuff", "Memory Motel"), having auditioned for Mick Taylor's job, which ultimately went to Ron Wood. 

Who’s Calling is the 16th album under Harvey Mandel’s name as a leader, and his second for Tompkins Square following the 2016 acclaimed comeback, Snake Pit. Joined by guitarist and co-producer Ryan Jewell (Ryley Walker, Laraaji) and bassist Andy Hess (Gov't Mule, Black Crowes), Who’s Calling finds the 77 year old guitar legend as vibrant and creative as ever. Despite unspeakable health setbacks and of course a Covid shutdown, Harvey has emerged miraculously stronger, proclaiming he’s never played better than on Who’s Calling.
