Discussing Charlotte's well-sampled Backyard Heavies with J.R. Branch & Mickey Walker

The Sounds Visual site tracked down J.R. Branch and Mickey Walker for a revealing chat about the Backyard Heavies.

Here's the scoop...
The Backyard Heavies were a short-lived, Charlotte-based R&B/funk band. An offshoot of the band The Tempests, producer Allen Touissaint encouraged the band to record some instrumental 45’s after they were brought to his attention by Marshall Sehorn.

One of their singles, 1971’s “Expo 83,” became a deep funk classic that was featured on countless DJ compilations, and would later be sampled by artists including Kanye West, Pete Rock, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, while other songs like “Chitlin’ Strut” would go on to be sampled by artists including Eminem, Kendrick Lamar featuring RZA, and Chance the Rapper.

Check out the Sounds Visual interview right here. Listen to a couple of Backyard Heavies classics below.

Watch the trailer for the new Cymande doc 'Getting It Back'

There's a new film about 70s UK-based funk crew Cymande called 'Getting It Back.' Seems like it should get a Toronto screening.

Here's the scoop...
Cymande, a group black British musicians, who all came to the UK from the Caribbean as children, released three brilliant albums in quick succession in the early 70s and were embraced in the USA. But in the UK they faced a music business beset by prejudice against home grown black talent and were largely ignored. They split in 1975. But their music lived on, as successive generations of artists and fans found and embraced their songs. Hip Hop, House, Drum and Bass, R&B, Rare Groove and crate digging communities all saw something in the songs of Cymande that inspired them. And now the band are back. Touring the world and being embraced by yet another breed of fan – the internet generation who weren’t even born when the band split up 40 years ago.

Watch the trailer for Tim MacKenzie-Smith's documentary 'Getting It Back' followed by a 2016 performance on KCRW and a list of upcoming screenings which so far doesn't include a Toronto date.

Cut Chemist went to Colombia and all we got was this wicked mix

Upon return from a recent trip to the deepest of crates in Colombia, Cut Chemist and company sought out to remix a unique set of dusty records, each different from the last, with an equally diverse list of producers. As the title suggests, Going Back to Cali: Cut Chemist’s Colombian Crates Remixed is more than cumbia, its a reflection on a tropical culture rich in spirit, creativity and passion strung together with field recordings found along the way. These records were bought in Cali, Colombia during Patronio Alvarez Festival last year, hence the name.

Our trip begins with folklore Colombiano favorites Los Corraleros de Majagual over a crunchy boom-bap by Co. Fee from Los Angeles’ beat collective, My Hollow Drum. Dance Kill Move (Stockholm, Sweden) adds some serious low end to Los Jovenes de Hierro’s classic charanga, “Ritmo Sabroso.” Ubiquity recording artist, currently residing in Colobmia, Bosq and Yukicito of La Junta (Los Angeles) contribute absolute party starters, while El Dusty’s “Mi Chola” give Los Teen Agers a taste Corpus Christi, TX. Atropolis (Queens) pays homage with a heavy stripped down edit of Julio y su Combo’s “Lamento Cumbiambero” and Los Chicos Altos (Barcelona) add in some rub-a-dub flavor on Los Hermanos Tuiran’s “Lluvia.” In addition we explore national treasures and the lesser known, new styles of chirimía, porro, pachanga, salsa and cumbia as interpreted by Sumohair (Los Angeles), Gabe Real (Pomona CA) and Greece duo SUPERSAN (aka Panama Cardoon & Mister Kentro).

Happy Birthday Cut Chemist!

Cut Chemist takes you on a trip through his vast collection with some special guests along for the ride below.

For over 20 years, Cut Chemist has toured the globe searching for music. Now the time has come to share that collection to the public every 1st and 3rd Saturday. The show will feature different segments to tackle different genres such as cassette culture new wave and rap demos, deep funk 45s, world beats and even contemporary artists and live guests.
“I’ve been missing the ‘party in a box’ feel of mix shows that used to exist 20 and 30 years ago like NYCs Red Alert show or the LA and Bay Area’s Wake Up Show. This is my chance to bring it back and share all the great music and talent I’ve run across over the years.” – Cut Chemist

A Stable Sound Episode 1 is a celebration for the man of the hour, always sweet, never sour and YO! Cut Chemist sure knows how to throw himself a birthday party. Guest appearances on this one include Thes One (PUTS), Hymnal, Marvski, Gaslamp Killer, the Beat Junkies and a gang of Cut's favorite selectors plus an interview with Mark the 45 King! Enjoy.
