Claudio Simonetti's Goblin performs Suspiria @ The Opera House, Nov 20

A full screening of Dario Argento's classic Suspiria will be accompanied by a performance of the original score by Claudio Simonetti's Goblin.

Legendary horror film soundtrack composer Claudio Simonetti and his critically acclaimed band, Goblin, are performing the classic soundtrack to Dario Argento's revered 1977 supernatural horror film Suspiria, during a full screening of the film. Due to popular demand, the highly anticipated tour event – which began in Baltimore on October 28 – comes to Toronto for a show at The Opera House on Tuesday, November 20. Claudio Simonetti's Goblin — the keyboardist's new version of Goblin featuring Bruno Previtali (guitar), Cecilia Nappo (bass) and Titta Tani (drums). — will also be performing additional classic Goblin material at the shows.

Described by Rolling Stone as "iconic," the soundtrack to Suspiria has become the genre's standard bearer and the criterion by which resulting horror film scores have come to be judged. Utilizing experimental instruments atypical of soundtracks at the time – tabla, bouzouki, and Moog synthesizer – Simonetti and Goblin created the movie's haunting main theme, and additional tense exercises in rhythm, dissonance and funky prog.

About Claudio Simonetti:
Claudio Simonetti (born February 19, 1952, São Paulo) is a Brazilian-born Italian musician and film composer. The keyboardist of the progressive rock band Goblin, Simonetti has specialized in the scores for Italian and American horror films since the 1970s. A long-time collaborator of director Dario Argento, Simonetti has worked on several of the director/producer's films including Deep Red, Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead, Tenebrae, Phenomena, Demoni, and Opera. His work has long been an iconic staple of Italian genre cinema, collaborating with directors like Ruggero Deodato, Umberto Lenzi, Lucio Fulci, Enzo G. Castellari, Lamberto Bava, and Sergio Martino. Simonetti's highly experimental scores are known for their signature, electronic and progressive rock-influenced sound, and have been imitated countless times. He studied at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome.

About Suspiria:
Suspiria is a 1977 Italian supernatural horror film directed by Dario Argento, co-written by Argento and Daria Nicolodi, partially based on Thomas De Quincey's 1845 essay Suspiria de Profundis (Sighs from the Depths) and co-produced by Claudio and Salvatore Argento. The film stars Jessica Harper as an American ballet student who transfers to a prestigious dance academy in Germany but realizes, amidst a series of brutal murders, that the academy is a front for a supernatural conspiracy.

With Call Me By Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino having just released his much-discussed update of Suspiria – boasting an entirely new score composed by Radiohead's Thom Yorke – there is no better time to revisit the fantastic original motion picture and its unsettling soundtrack, performed by its original creators in an intimate setting.

Legendary Italian horror-prog thrillers Goblin descend on Toronto in October

After four decades of chilling Italian horror film fans, Goblin have decided it's time to tour North America and they've scheduled their Toronto debut at the Opera House on Friday, October 11.

The Italian soundtrack supremos are threatening to play all of their classic cues from the Dario Argento films Profondo Rosso (aka Deep Red), Suspiria, Tenebrae, along with songs from the albums Roller, Il fantastico Viaggio del Bagarozzo Mark, and most recent Back To The Goblin. Other famous scores never previously performed on stage will also be knocked out on this tour.

This whole reunion concept took root in 2005, when Goblin guitarist Massimo Morante and keyboardist Maurizio Guarini, together with the rhythm section of bassist Fabio Pignatelli and drummer Agostino Marangolo, recorded a new album, Back To The Goblin, after a lengthy absence.

Four years later, they had their chops together enough to start touring Europe and then managed to coax Claudio Simonetti back into the fold in 2010. A successful swing through Japan and Australia last year led to plans for the current North American tour slated for October.

The current Goblin line-up features original 1975 members, Keyboardists Claudio Simonetti, Maurizio Guarini and guitarist Massimo Morante bolstered by two heavy hitters from the Goblin-inspired group Daemona, drummer Titta Tani and bassist Bruno Previtali who joined the group with Simonetti in 2010.

Providing tour support (up to October 20) will be Secret Chiefs 3, formed by Mr. Bungle founding member Trey Spruance. Cali-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Spruance also runs the Mimicry label who've put out albums by Estradasphere, The Youngs, Cleric, Danubius, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Brazzaville and the amazing Dengue Fever.
