Jon Savage's musical tour of the early 80s

Jon Savage's new digital retrospective, The Art Of Things To Come covers 1980-82 and mercifully avoids much of the chart dross.

Here's the scoop from Ace Records HQ...

With the new collection 1980-1982 The Art Of Things To Come, Ace Records continues Jon Savage’s highly respected year-by-year series documenting the music scene on a world stage, which began with a volume based on his successful 1966 book for Faber.

A genre-spanning two-disc array of pivotal singles, extended mixes, context-providers, scene-stealers and lost gems from disco, b-boy, new wave, rap, indie and synth: these are the decks that defined the dawn of the 80s, captured the mood and crystallized Jon’s personal experiences of these years. Artists include the Associates, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, the Human League, Grace Jones, New Order, Yello, the Peech Boys and Zapp.

Living in Manchester, working for Granada TV in tandem with Tony Wilson and spinning discs at Joy Division and New Order gigs, this was a time where clubs were key for Jon. It’s no surprise that this is the first volume where 12-inch singles make their mark in the series.

The 80s began with Thatcher in power, the rise of the New Right in America and the death of Ian Curtis, but by 1982 the world was travelling out of post-punk darkness into the light of a bright new decade. It was beginning of the art of things to come. Get a copy from Ace right here. Check out the track list below.

Bush Tetras get deluxe box set treatment with Rhythm and Paranoia

The 3LP/2CD Rhythm and Paranoia collection covers all the essentials from NYC's Bush Tetras (sans Topper Headon).

Here's the scoop...

The rollout of Rhythm and Paranoia: The Best of The Bush Tetras has been bittersweet for the band who lost founding member Dee Pop on October 9th. As a testament to the band's perseverance over the last 40 years, Pat Place and Cynthia Sley went ahead with the Bush Tetras' box set release show at Le Poisson Rouge in New York on Saturday (November 13) with Don Christensen (Contortions/Raybeats) on drums knowing that this is what Dee Pop would have wanted.

Flashes of light rarely burn for long. Bush Tetras exploded into New York in 1979 and flamed out just a few years later. Yet somehow this lightning-quick band have risen from their own ashes again and again for four decades. The spark that ignited Bush Tetras tapped into a deep grid of power, fueled by guitarist Pat Place, singer Cynthia Sley, and drummer Dee Pop.

That chemistry is palpable on Rhythm and Paranoia: The Best of Bush Tetras, which features 29 songs across 3 LPs pressed onto 180-gram vinyl and remastered by Carl Saff, plus a 46-page book with never-before-seen photos, an original essay on the band by Marc Masters, and micro essays by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, R&B legend Nona Hendryx, The Clash’s Topper Headon, & more.

From the band’s earliest recordings to their current, vital-as-ever incarnation, Rhythm and Paranoia – for the first time ever – showcases the their unique, influential, and body-shaking meld of rock, punk, funk, reggae, and more in one cohesive, immersive, and meticulously constructed box set.
