Classically-trained harpist Bridget Kibbey's newest touring project, Bach to Brazil, features Kibbey joined by Latin-Grammy winning percussionist Samuel Torres on percussion, and Louis Arques on clarinet.
Bach to Brazil celebrates Nuevo Latino luminaries living in the United States via newly-commissioned works alongside the folk masters that inspired them in a mash-up of maracatú, frevo, chorinho, bossa nova, joropo, tango, and cumbia from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, and Venezuela. The project tracks the evolution of popular song and dance forms in modern-day South, Central and North America, from the baroque courts of Europe, to the Northern Coast of Africa, to the indigenous melodies of the Caribbean Coast...and finally, landing right in the heart of NYC.
Cumbia is a well-beloved dance form in Colombia; yet its origin story is complex – with influences from American Indian and African cultures. It's evolution is seen from the folkloric to the popular and celebrated on stages from Shakira to Nuevo Latin Fusion. Check the Bach to Brazil version of the José Barros tune "El Pescador" (arr.
