Catherine MacLellan takes over family business
The new Silhouette album from Catherine MacLellan sounds like her best work yet which is quite an achievement for the PEI singer/songwriter considering her impressive back catalogue of critically acclaimed albums.
Don't believe it? Wait till you hear MacLellan sweetly honour her late father Gene MacLellan by taking back possession of his oft-covered Canuck classic Snowbird. With a harmony assist from Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy, Catherine's soulful reading reveals the song's aching essence in a way that will make you forget that Anne Murray ever sang it. Props to producer David Baxter for his tasteful touch in keeping things simple and letting McLellan's gorgeous voice take over.
These recently released clips (below) for three tunes from Silhouette should give you a good idea of why MacLellan is among the most promising talents to arise from the Great White North in ages – everything she does looks so darn effortless. Heck, I've seen her bring down the house with a song she prefaced with an admission that it was written on the way to the gig. If she's playing a show anywhere near you on her current tour, don't dare miss it.
