Expanded reissues of John Cale's Paris 1919 & The Academy In Peril due Nov 15

The new 16-track double vinyl edition of Paris 1919 includes the new John Cale recording "Fever Dream 2024: You're A Ghost."

Here's the scoop...

Following the release of POPtical Illusion earlier this year, John Cale announces the Paris 1919 Deluxe Edition and The Academy in Peril reissue, out November 15th via Domino. Both remastered by Heba Kadry, this is the first artist sanctioned reissue of these beloved records. Paris 1919 includes previously unreleased outtakes and liner notes by Grayson Haver Currin, and features a brand new recording, “Fever Dream 2024: You’re a Ghost,” and The Academy of Peril includes bonus track, “Temper.” Both will be available on CD, vinyl and digitally. You can pre-order directly from Domino right here. Watch John Cale's 2011 performance of Paris 1919 with Malmö Operaorkester in Sweden following the tracklisting of Paris 1919 Deluxe Edition below.

“Revisiting work from the past is a double-edged sword for me. Of course, it’s bound to happen when you've been making music for 60 years or so. . . What's unique about this process with Domino, is their desire to get it right.  Not merely re-issue something for the sake of an anniversary or racking up a catalogue favorite - but finding new treasures and highlighting what made it special in the first place.  After hearing the test pressings, it occurred to me that the new mastering was a major part of how these works will be presented, rather than simply being preserved. There are moments of clarity and even a laugh or two had by revisiting not only the music, but recalling the sessions (and antics) that made up what became these two recordings. It is my pleasure to share these with you . . . again.” – John Cale, September 2024

Toronto impact of promoter Gary Topp documented in He Hijacked My Brain

Gary Topp opened up his archive for the much anticipated UXB Press book He Hijacked My Brain out Dec 1.

He Hijacked My Brain – Gary Topp's Toronto

“New York run by the Swiss” is how Peter Ustinov once memorably described Toronto: a big, busy city that ran on money and tradition; orderly and prosperous, sure, but rather lacking in culture and excitement. If never entirely true, this characterisation is now entirely out-dated, and few personalities can take half the credit for that as Gary Topp.

Armed with taste, energy and a powerful disdain for convention, Gary Topp took Toronto by storm. As part of The Garys (with longtime co-hort Gary Cormier) he offered Canada its first taste of the Ramones, the Police, the B52’s, Sun Ra, Slayer, Talking Heads, The Cramps, James Chance & The Contortions and countless others.

From humble beginnings bringing underground film to thrill-hungry early ‘70s audiences, through years in which he became the city’s most daring and visionary concert promoter, Order of Canada nominee Gary Topp transformed Toronto’s cultural landscape over five exhilarating decades.

Spanning taverns to concert halls, cinemas to circuses, if it was new, vital and discomfiting to the mainstream, Gary booked it. Packed with first-hand accounts and rare photographs, He Hijacked My Brain - Gary Topp’s Toronto celebrates the revolutionary events that countered Toronto’s culture, painting an insider’s look at a pivotal period that shaped Toronto as a cultural hotbed before Drake and TIFF existed.

From Derek Emerson and his award winning team at UXB Press that created Tomorrow Is Too Late (Toronto Hardcore Punk in the ‘80s) and Eve of Darkness Toronto Heavy Metal in the ‘80s) this is the third in a series of books documenting the history of Toronto’s underground music and culture.

He Hijacked My Brain – Gary Topp's Toronto will be available for purchase at the Concert Hall book launch on December 1st. See below for details and clips. Note: Rare original paper items from Gary's personal collection have been randomly included with copies of the book available at the event!

"The Garys helped define the city of Toronto as a cosmopolitan mecca of artistic expression. They stayed one step ahead in shaping the city’s cultural landscape."STING, The Police

"The Garys gave an entire generation this idea that you can do it, this is going to happen. They always fought the good fight. And they did it for passion, not profit."STEVEN LECKIE,  The Viletones

"The Garys gave (Toronto) its edge, literally (with The Edge club) and figuratively." — GLOBE AND MAIL

"There weren’t many spaces that queer culture could go in the ’70s and ’80s. The Garys were supportive when a lot of others weren’t. If a list were made of the musicians the Garys helped to break, they would win every award imaginable, it’s an absolute no-brainer." — CAROLE POPE (Rough Trade)

"It’s all a matter of taste for Topp."NATIONAL POST

"Gary Topp made my life so much richer than it would have been without his work. I will remain indebted until the day I die."ROB BOWMAN, Grammy Winning Music Historian

Jay Douglas featured in Play It Loud! doc on Toronto's Jamaican connection

Jamaican-born, Toronto-based soul great Jay Douglas stars in Graeme Mathieson's forthcoming film Play It Loud! Check the trailer.

Here's the scoop...

Early 1960’s Toronto was a mostly white, Anglo-centric city. Beneath this veneer of Conservative respectability, an exciting underground music scene emerged, created by a Jamaican diaspora including newcomers like Jackie Mittoo, Wayne McGhie and a teenageJay Douglas. Battling racism and indifference, they made an indelible, but little appreciated mark on Canadian music and culture. Six decades later, Jay Douglas is still carrying the torch for Jamaican music, and enjoying the recognition and respect he has long craved.

Play it Loud! (set for release via TVO Docs in February, 2025) is a feature documentary that tells the little known story of how Jamaican music became a critical and unlikely part of Canadian culture. The film reveals a social and cultural migration that made Canada a  mecca for Jamaican music, recognized around the world, but little heralded at home. This story is told through the life, music, struggles and triumphs of beloved Jamaican Canadian singer Jay Douglas. Born as Clive Pinnock, in rural Jamaica to a single mother, Douglas began performing professionally at 17 and has never stopped. Today, nearly 60 years later, he’s more popular than ever.

Watch the trailer for "Dig We Must," another film about record collectors

Aaron Levinson's forthcoming film Dig We Must features Philly's Val Shively and many other collectors. Watch the trailer below.

DIG WE MUST

A film about people and the records that collect them.

SYNOPSIS

There is an urgent need to paint a national portrait of record collectors. At a time where the nation is incredibly divided and our understanding of one another becomes ever distant, the thrill of searching and collecting records known as “the dig,” brings people together from completely different backgrounds and creates a powerful and unbreakable kinship.

From the record stores that are institutions in cities and towns across America to the Tik-Tok generation that post their vinyl hauls on social media, record collectors immediately identify with each other. For collectors, it is a social code— and a way of life.

Exploring themes of compulsion, loss, preservation, and community, DIG WE MUST explores the question; when does passion become obsession? What are people willing to lose on the quest to collect records? And how do records bring people together across communities and generations?

The profound act of record collecting is subversive in this unique cultural moment. It forces people to lean in with their senses from the visual appeal of art on the cover, to the weight of holding a record, and the act of listening together. Digging and listening create room for social connections that are often lost in this era.

Collecting records holds vast creative potential and community. But the stakes are high, and for some collectors, the obsession can lead to divorce, financial hardship, and tainted legacy. For others, it means finding your community and applying a soothing balm in an overstimulated world.
