Dollar Bin Delights: Jeff Moore & Christina Becker

One of the all-time great private-press curios is the Youngest Son album by Toronto's Jeff Moore & Christina Becker from 1974.

Here's the scoop...
Originally begun as a school project in 1973 by aspiring singer/songwriter Jeff Moore while a student at Toronto's Bayview Secondary School, The Youngest Son album – credited to "Jeff Moore and Friends" benefitted greatly from the input of Moore's musician acquaintances. In particular, "Flying So High" and "Blind Man," the two songs on the album performed by Christina Becker accompanying herself on acoustic guitar are clear stand-outs. As it turns out, Becker was also from the Richmond Hill area but was attending Langstaff Secondary at the time and singing in a band after school called Sideroad with Paul McDonald, Rob Horner, AJ Smitheram and Doug Lippay.

Writes Becker, "I was in a band at Langstaff with a couple of band mates who went to Bayview Rob Horner and Aj Smitheram. Jeff was looking for a backup band and we connected through them. We were just supposed to do back up, but then Jeff heard a couple of my songs and asked to include them on the album. Amazing opportunity. especially considering that was almost 50 years ago. WHOA."

Have a listen. And check the 1974 clipping from The Richmond Hill Liberal below.
