R.I.P. guitarist Alice Stuart, 1942-2023

Sadly, singer/songwriter and folk-blues guitarist Alice Stuart passed away on Monday at the age of 81. She'll be greatly missed.

The Handsome Family’s new record began with a scream in the night. “It was a bleak winter during the middle of the pandemic,” says Brett Sparks. “One night around 4 a.m. Rennie started screaming in her sleep. She screamed, ‘Come into the circle Joseph! There’s no moon tonight.’ Scary as it was, I thought, man, that’s a good chorus!”

The Handsome Family (songwriting and marriage partners Brett and Rennie Sparks) have been defining the dark end of americana for over 30 years. Brett writes the music and Rennie writes the words. Their work has been covered by many artists including Andrew Bird, Blue Man Group and most-recently Phoebe Bridgers. Their song “Far From Any Road” was the opening theme for HBO’s True Detective season one and still receives thousands of Shazams every week from all over the world.

Handsome Family songs take place under overpasses and inside airports. Historical figures like George A. Custer and Nikola Tesla appear alongside a flying milkman and the whisper of an air conditioner against a plastic tree.

Their eleventh studio album, Hollow (out Sep. 8, 2023) delves into the natural world at the edges of the man-made. It is a record lush with leaves and shadows and ing with occult mystery. Check out the first three songs "Joseph." "Skunks" and "The King Of Everything" below.

Altin Gün rocks the Danforth Music Hall, Wednesday

Be sure to see Amsterdam-based Turkish psych crew Altin Gün playing songs from "Aşk" at the Danforth Music Hall on August 2. 

Here's the scoop...

Hailing from Amsterdam but coming from various backgrounds, Altın Gün has captured the world’s imagination with an indelible Turkish folk-psych fusion. The band combines psychedelic rock, deep funk, synthpop, cosmic reggae, and more with the rich and incredibly diverse traditions of Anatolian folk music. Altin Gün broke out internationally in 2018 debut album "On" and a year later the band earned a prestigious Grammy nomination for “Best World Album” with it’s second album Gece.

After two years of recording separately from home during the pandemic, Merve Daşdemir (vocals and keyboards), Erdinç Ecevit (vocals and keyboards), Thijs Elzinga (guitar), Jasper Verhulst (bass), Daniel Smienk (drums), Chris Bruining (percussion) convened for a live-in-the-studio session resulting in the new Altin Gün release "Aşk." This album sees Altın Gün swinging away from the electronic, synth-enhanced sound of their home-recorded albums, to capture all the infectious power and urgency of the band’s propulsive live performances. 

Recorded using vintage equipment and techniques, the ten groundbreaking tracks on Aşk all represent visionary new readings of traditional Turkish folk tunes, revealing how these ancient songs remain eternally resonant and ripe for reinterpretation. This results in an exuberant return to the 70s Anatolian folk-rock sound that has characterized Altın Gün’s first two albums.
