The Paranoyds rock The Monarch Tavern on Halloween night!

The Paranoyds play Toronto's Monarch Tavern tonight. Watch their "BWP," "Lizzie" and "Freak Out" videos below.

Here's the scoop...

After some audio feedback and a steady guitar loop begins, "BWP" opens the album with an attempt to escape the monotony of daily life. Over warbled vocals, expressing disappointment with how the once-alluring future turned out, guitarist and vocalist Lexi Funston sings, "Up on my bed / I'm looking to mend / I contend I've got a case / A fight in my head / I've got a ten I'm willing to spend / A day is long when not much is coming in / Cross off 60 more, this future was a bore"

Funston explains the fuzzy jam is inspired by feeling stuck in an endless routine for so long, daydreams no longer feel special or significant–they've just become the norm. "Every now and then there are those days and sometimes even weeks where it just feels like you're in a rut--for me they're usually induced by some sort of gnarly LA heatwave or fire (if i'm really unlucky, it's both!). All you can really do to escape the heat is daydream, but daydreaming day-to-day...it's just not the same."

Speaking to what the title's three letters stand for, Funston adds, "I wrote the demo for the song at a time where it felt like all of a sudden Spotify was overcompensating for years of only boosting male rock bands, in this super disingenuous way (2019). There was this playlist called "Badass Women's Playlist," which I thought was such a cringe title for a playlist (looking at the playlist now, they dropped the "Women's"). "But, on the other hand," Funston admits, "I wanted our music to be on this playlist...I figured if I wrote a song with that intention in mind and named it after the playlist, we might finally get some subliminal love from Spotify...I guess that makes it a self-referential song about selling out."

Directed by Max Flick, the track's accompanying video allows each band member and their instrument shine as each shot corresponds seamlessly with each note played. Against a black backdrop, hues of red, yellow and blue along with a single spotlight bring the floating heads of each band member in and out of view. Similar to previously shared visuals, the band brings their retro spirit with them into the future, creating something brand new altogether.

Flick, who has previously collaborated with the band, was thrilled to be able to direct the latest video. "Since the first time I saw The Paranoyds play at the original Non Plus Ultra I was an instant fan and knew I wanted to make a video together. We have worked on many projects over the years, but this is my first time directing for them." After listening to the track, Flick had a clear vision for the visual. "Listening to BWP immediately provided me with these vivid images that we were able to make come to life and I couldn't be happier with the outcome."

Matthew Sweet vs. Kate Bush

Somehow Matthew Sweet managed to make Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" sound like one of his own tunes.

Here's the scoop...
Matthew Sweet just released his version of Kate Bush’s landmark 1978 single, “Wuthering Heights,” on all digital platforms. This is the first new recording from Sweet since his January 2021 album Catspaw, which was recorded pre-Covid. Sweet, known for his collaborations with hotshot guitarists over the years, plays the searing guitar solo on the track as well as all the additional instruments save for the drums, played by longtime Sweet sideman Ric Menck.

You can get Matthew Sweet's version of "Wuthering Heights digitally right here
Listen to both versions of "Wuthering Heights" below.

Writes Matthew Sweet:

"As the latest season of Stranger Things (Netflix) came and went this year, it was hard not to notice the resurgence of Kate Bush’s song "Running Up That Hill" in this Covid recovering world of 2022.

"I do love that song, but this got me thinking about a piano and vocal demo I once made of "Wuthering Heights," the 1978 hit that first brought the 19 year-old Kate to the attention of the world of music. Like Kate herself, I have a strong amount of Irish blood in me, as my mother, like hers, was 100% Irish. In fact, I have dual citizenship between Ireland and America. Maybe this helps account for my always feeling a mystic kinship with Kate, despite our music being worlds apart in so many ways. Regardless, my wife recently urged me to dig up that demo of mine, and although I couldn’t find a multitrack of it, I did locate a rough of the song I had bounced down many years ago. And so it is I came to overdub some guitars and other instruments and produce this single track for release in tribute to Kate. In this streaming world we live in, there is nothing to stop me from doing so. My friend Ric Menck played drums on this originally, and as it’s turned out, I have played everything else. The track has no background vocals, in keeping with the original, to preserve the very personal nature of the lyrics and song. It is worth noting that despite the literary origins of the lyrics, Kate is, in fact, the Cathy of the song. She was born to the name, referred to by it throughout her early years, and didn’t ask to be called Kate until she was nearly 12 years old. Although Kate’s range for singing is quite high on her version, I had only to sing the song an octave lower in the original key and it worked well for me. Hopefully somebody out there might enjoy it, and be led back to Kate’s own very special music." — Matthew Sweet, 2022

Daniel Clowes' The Complete Eightball 1-18 reprint due Nov. 1

Here's the scoop...

Collecting issues 1-18 of the iconic Daniel Clowes comics anthology, Eightball; it contains the original installments of Ghost World, the short that the film Art School Confidential was based on, and much more, newly designed for paperback by the author.

The beloved comic book series Eightball made Daniel Clowes' name even before he gained fame as a bestselling graphic novelist (Ghost World, Patience, David Boring, Ice Haven) and filmmaker. Now, Fantagraphics is collecting every single page of these long out-of-print issues in a paperback edition. It includes more than 500 pages of vintage Clowes: seminal serialized graphic novels, strips, and rants, such as "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron," "Ghost World," "Pussey," "I Hate You Deeply," "Sexual Frustration," "Ugly Girls," "Why I Hate Christians," "Message to the People of the Future," "Paranoid," "My Suicide," "Chicago," "Art School Confidential," "On Sports," "Zubrick and Pogeybait," "Hippypants and Peace-Bear," "Grip Glutz," "The Sensual Santa," "Feldman," and many more. Colemine releasing deep funk 'Drift' album by Sebastian Nagel's Winston Brothers

The Winston Brothers is actually another studio project of shadowy Hamburger Sebastian Nagel of Mighty Mocambos notoriety.

Here's the scoop...

Hot on the heels of their "Winston Theme" b/w "Boiling Pot" debut 45 released on Colemine Records, The Winston Brothers follow up with their debut full-length LP on November 18th. Drift is the name of the game, presenting eleven versatile cuts to invite listeners on an all-instrumental trip back to the future of funk.

The Winston Brothers are a modular studio project by Hamburg-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Sebastian Nagel (The Mighty Mocambos, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band) and drummer / percussionist extraordinaire Lucas Kochbeck (The KBCS, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, Hamburg Spinners, Diazpora, Magic Source, Hotel Nineteen). Industry veterans with a penchant for analog music production, the two combine a boom bap state of mind with well-rounded funk acumen and able frequent collaborators to create dynamic arrangements that are both an audible nod to the genre’s past as well as a contemporary blend of like-minded organic styles.

Lacing heavy drums with juicy breaks, head-nodding grooves, scorching riffs and melodic instrumentation, Drift draws on the raw energy inherent to late ‘60s funk and takes it from there. Catchy, repetitive motifs gain musical momentum as they evolve into vibrant and autonomous soundscapes with a distinct drive of their own, ranging from incendiary to more laid-back and almost dreamlike. Strutting an irresistible bounce to their step, The Winston Brothers are poised to light up dance floors, river cruises and backyard BBQs alike.

The Winston Brothers' new album Drift will be available November 18th via Colemine Records. Click here to pre-order a limited edition copy on transparent dunkel brown vinyl in honour of Oktoberfest.
