"The Regulator" (shot by David Dalglish) is off Dream Syndicate's new album, The Universe Inside – out April 10th – see all the clips below.
Here's the scoop...
The Dream Syndicate - The Universe Inside
When The Dream Syndicate emerged in the early 80s, frontman Steve Wynn declared that “we’re playing music we want to hear because nobody else is doing it” – he added, “I’ll comprise on what I eat or where I sleep, but I won’t compromise on what music I play.”
Both were true, and although their template of Velvet Underground meets Crazy Horse may seem commonplace today (and let’s not forget, the Syndicate spawned many imitators), their raw twin guitar, bass and drums approach was not common during an era when slick polished MTV bands ruled. The band were uncompromising. But before MTV switched to reality shows, they were no more.
After 23 years, they reemerged in 2012 with a slight change in lineup - guitarist Jason Victor replaced Paul B. Cutler - and after a blaze of touring, they recorded their first album in decades, How Did I Find Myself Here? The album was surprisingly fresh. The addition of former Green on Red keyboardist Chris Cacavas provided lush textures previously unknown in their guitar-based music but maybe even more surprising was a vocal cameo from co-founding member, Kendra Smith.
More touring (joined by now official member Cacavas) followed quickly by another album These Times – which refined the sonic landscapes explored on How Did I Find Myself Here?
This band is not regurgitating old albums and previous glories, but developing with the same urgency that a pack of youngsters would.
Which brings us to the band's 7th album, The Universe Inside, slated for release via ANTI- on April 10th. Every press release ever written will claim “this is new and different” – well, damn it, it is! Just look at the song lengths: 20:27, 7:36, 8:56, 9:55 and 10:53. Ok, sure – the Syndicate have occasionally committed a long song to vinyl, “John Coltrane Stereo Blues” was 9 minutes with live versions over the ten-minute mark.
However, when one thinks of the Dream Syndicate, it’s not just the wild abandon with which singer/guitarist Wynn, drummer Dennis Duck, bassist Mark Walton, and lead guitarist Jason Victor perform – it’s the carefully constructed songwriting of Wynn that comes to mind. By now every rock critic in the country has predetermined who he or she feels Wynn reminds them of and what they think of that style of songs. This time, don’t!
For the first time, every song is a group songwriting effort. What seeps in are Dennis Duck’s knowledge of European avantgarde music, Jason Victor’s passion for 70s prog, Mark Walton’s experience in Southern-fried music collectives and Wynn’s love of vintage electric jazz. The dazzling display of album cover artwork alone should clue you into the changes.
Watch the suitably trippy David Dalglish videos for "The Regulator," "The Longing," "Apropos Of Nothing" and "Dusting Off The Rust" right after an onscreen discussion between Steve Wynn and the other people involved in making The Universe Inside.
Jazzagression is putting out an unreleased 70s set by the Jan Simonsen Quintet – feat. members of That's Why, En Tiempo & Ruphus – on March 2.
Here's the scoop... Jan Simonsen Quintet was an active mid-seventies, norwegian jazz group, drawing up influences from Herbie Hancock to McCoy Tyner the group's very rhythmical approach fell positive with the crowd and landed them regular gigs at the famous Club7 venue in Oslo, the group also performed at Molde Jazz 1976. In Winter that same year the group recorded these four tracks to reel using Asker Church for maximum reverb effect and broaden the acoustics. Jazzaggression is pleased to present these 4 tracks on vinyl for the first time, with one bonus track (digital). Vinyl comes in a special heavy paste-on sleeve with printed inner sleeve containing full story and photos. Limited to 500 copies – out March 2. Pre-order it right here. Listen to clips below.
Modern Harmonic is releasing the debut album from groundbreaking 80s post-punk ensemble Pulsallama on May 15th.
Here's the scoop...
Seven woman post-punk percussion ensemble! Twenty minutes of ‘80s post-punk pleasure that marks Pulsallama’s first full length recording! Known for their bombastic, ritualistic shows at Studio 57 on NYC’s Lower East Side featuring jungle style rhythms, dual basses, and an all out assault of percussive perfection, this album captures that energy in what’s oddly a 1983 French radio broadcast recorded live in a studio in NYC!?! Featuring three supercharged versions of their most adored tracks that rival the originals, plus four more that are largely unheard.
Pre-order a copy of the Pulsallama album right here. Listen to "Ungawa, Part II" following the vintage clips for "The Devil Lives In My Husband's Body" directed by Paul Dougherty and a 1981 performance.

Montreal's Red Mass are joined by Mike Watt, King Khan, Mac DeMarco, etc for their new concept album A Hopeless Noise, in the works since at least 2014.
Here's the scoop...
"The album tells the story of the Diamond Girl. You follow her as she falls from grace and loses touch with reality. It is The Mass’ modern day retelling of Don Quixote. As the Diamond Girl develops a psychological disorder and suffers delusions of grandeur. She still believes that she is living in the utmost luxury when in reality, her world crumbles around her. Amidst her trauma, she wanders aimlessly through the city and falls prey to the most decadent of low lives. She wallows in vice as the wings of temptation carry her from one nightclub to the next. When she finally breaks she goes on a violent rampage.
"In order to mirror the Diamond Girl’s multiple personalities, the group worked in numerous punk sub genres and picked different artists to bring each song to life. Musicians from all over the world joined in, including members of The Black Lips, Duchess Says, Human Eye, Fly Pan Am & Godspeedyoublackemperor as well as Mac DeMarco, Rick Froberg (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu), John Kastner (Doughboys, Asexuals), Evan Dando, Hugo Mudie (The Sainte Catherines), producer/musician Martin Bisi, Jered Gummere (The Ponys), King Khan and Mike Watt. We ended up with collaborations with some of our favourite musicians, our friends and even our dad's added to the mix. Love is supreme." – Roy Vucino, Red Mass

Mudhoney rip through an English language version of the early Leather Nun gem "Ensam I Natt" in fine style.
Here's the scoop on Mudhoney's cover of The Leather Nun's "Ensam I Natt"
"I’d never given it a thought. Honestly. One of the very first Leather Nun-songs I wrote was ’Ensam i natt’, recorded and always performed in swedish. From the very start, Leather Nun was an international adventure, because it was an adventure rather than a career. But it never ever crossed our minds to do ’Ensam i natt’ in english. Untill a few weeks ago…
"A few weeks ago there is an e-mail from Mark Arm of Sub Pop/grunge pioneers Mudhoney. They intend to cover ’Ensam i natt’, but for obvious reasons in english as Mark is not very good with lyrics in swedish. Can't blame him. And not only that – Mudhoney had already translated the lyrics. A very straight and stiff translation but still a translation.
"Mark wants me to supervise the translation. Not only check the translation but also assist him in reworking the translation from a singing point of view. Translating can be quite tricky. Straight translations may be correct as for content, but translated lyrics also needs to work vocally as for meter and syllables. And quite often, you’ve to rework and mould the translation to find a working balance between translation and meter. That’s where it’s at, right now. This weekend, I emailed a reworked translation of ’Ensam i natt’ to Mark Arm. We’ll continue to bounce the translation back and forth.
"If it will finally end up in the Mudhoney Live-repertoire or on record, only future will tell. But considering Mudhoney going to lenghts to translate the song and then incoporate Leather Nun in the translating process, accounts for it being more than just a whim. Like, there are more simple ways to cover a fellow artist, right? My hunch is that Mudhoney intends to record the cover version if they can pull off a decent version in english.
"’Ensam i natt’ is probably the Leather Nun song that suits the furious grunge almost pop sound of Mudhoney, the best. It’s punk-pop rather than punk-rock. And it’s a song that lyricwise is even more current in the US and the western world today, than 35 years ago. Nevertheless, we’re all truly flattered and will curiously and supportive follow the whereabouts of the Mudhoney/’Ensam i natt’-project." – Jonas Almquist @theleathernun November 13, 2016

The Reckless Drifters, feat. Blondie's Clem Burke & Frank Infante, are releasing their two-steppin' Joy Division cover digitally today via iTunes.
Here's the scoop...
Just in time for Valentine's Day, The Reckless Drifters are back with their second release, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" backed with "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin," arriving today, February 14th, via iTunes. You can get it right hereafter listening to their cover of the Joy Division classic below.
The Reckless Drifters features a rotating mix of experienced musical talents from acts like Blondie, The Bangles, Dramarama and Miss Derringer in an ongoing country/punk covers project with a twist - classic country songs get punked up while punk and alternative classics get the country treatment.
This latest pair of genre-bending tracks, a revved-up version of Ernest Tubb's "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin" and a country-tinged version of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," features a trio of returning Reckless Drifters from the group's debut release - singer John Easdale and guitarist Mark Englert, both from Dramarama, along with bassist Sylvain de Muizon from Miss Derringer. And this time around, the gang is joined by drummer Clem Burke and guitarist Frank Infante of Blondie fame, Annette Zilinskas from The Bangles and Blood On The Saddle, and popular L.A. songstress Beck Black to form a truly impressive array of talents.
Though many folks may already be familiar with Ernest Tubb's original version of "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin" and Joy Division's original version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart," it's safe to assume that no one's ever heard them quite like this before. And both songs take on a surprisingly fresh life when presented in a whole new context!
On "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin," Easdale's and Zilinskas's lively, dueling vocals make for a desperate and delirious duet, while Infante's and Englert's propulsive guitar-playing fuels the turbo-charged track to a frantic finish. On "Love Will Tear Us Apart," Easdale's and Black's regret-drenched vocals offer a perfect counterpoint to each other, while Infante's moody guitars really set the tone, and Englert's slide guitar, lap steel, banjo and mandolin provide the perfect accompaniment. Meanwhile, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame drummer Burke and bassist de Muizon combine to provide the driving rhythm for "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin" while delivering a suitable shuffle to "Love Will Tear Us Apart." A music video for "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin," which offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of the song, is on the way.
