Hard-hollerin' old-timey fiddler and noted 78 rpm record collector Frank Fairfield curates another reissue culled from his vast shellac stockpile (and those of his wax hound buddies), this time avoiding the more popular artists and titles  of the era to focus on the rarer wrinkles in the fabric of Anglo-American vernacular music. That means you'll hear unusual performers, uncommon instrumentation and hotshot pickers from small towns across the States like Willard Hodgin who offers some sage advice in "Don't Get One Woman On Your Mind," Blind Joe Mangrum & Fred Shriver's ode to home cooking "Bacon & Cabbage," Mustard & Gravy's revelatory "The Whale Did, I Know He Did," The Tweedy Brothers' high steppin' "Chicken Reel."and the Ernest Rogers head-scratcher "Mythological Blues" among other uncomped faves you won't come across anywhere else.

Forget that "Americana" baloney, Turn Me Loose spotlights Anglo-American down-home music as it actually was and in many cases still is – albeit largely overlooked. With painstaking audio restoration by Michael Kieffer (of Origin Jazz Library notoriety), Turn Me Loose is Frank's impressive follow-up to his prior set of oddball 78s issued by Tompkins Square back in 2010 called Unheard Ofs & Forgotten Abouts, specifically concerning the recording of vernacular music from around the world. Taken together, they offer an intriguing alternate perspective of the music made during the so-called "Gramophone era." But enough about that, the real stars of Turn Me Loose are the singers and players you've never heard. Check out those South Georgia Highballers who gave this fine collection its title.

Ghanaian highlife star Jewel Ackah rocks Lula Lounge August 29

Batuki Music Society presents a special double bill featuring Ghanaian highlife legend Jewel Ackah and Adam Solomon's African Blues & Jazz Trio at the Lula Lounge on Thursday, August 29. Backing stellar vocalist Jewel Ackah will be members of Toronto's own highlife heavy-hitters, Afrafranto, including Jewel's son, Kofi Ackah.

Jewel Ackah, born in Ghana’s western Nzima region in 1945, initially had aspirations of being a professional soccer player but  found his true calling as a singer, starting with a cover band called The Pick-Ups in 1965 before finding fame in 1967 with C.K Mann’s Carousel 7. 

He then moved on to a succession of groups, namely Ebo Taylor and the Railway Band, the El Dorados (of the Aboso Glass Factory) and the Medican Lantics, the resident band of the Atlantic Hotel in Takoradi.  In 1973, Jewel joined A.B. Crentsil’s Sweet Talks, in Tema and continued to perform with them regularly during the mid to late 70s. In 1979 he fronted a new Sweet Talks line-up, and recorded Hallelujah! Amen! with the S.T. Express followed by the release of the solo set Asomdwee Henee. During a brief stint with The Great Pilsner’s Band, a brewery-sponsored outfit led by Jimmy Kwapps, he took time out for a 1980 session with guitarist Kwame Nkrumah to revisit their favourite highlife hits of the 50s that resulted in the lovely Yeridi A Wu album.

After a couple of ill-fated attempts at reaching a younger audience with the soca-inspired Super Pawa and funk-highlife hybrid London Connection albums, he returned to a more conventional modern highlife concept with his own  Butterfly Six in 1985 with which he performed through the early 90s. However, he did reunite with A.B. Crentsil and Pat Thomas for the 1986 album Electric Hi-Life.  Ever since, Jewel has issued a steady stream of gospel albums such as Me Su Fre Wo in 1994 and ‘Ahwereshow’ in 1995. Hopefully the upcoming Lula Lounge show is an indication that Ackah is now aware of the incredible resurgence of interest in West African highlife from the 60s and 70s and he'll once again return to the classic sound for which he's best loved.   

Opening the show is the African Blues & Jazz Trio featuring Adam Solomon on guitar and vocals, bassist Conrad Henderson and Phil Caffery on drums.  Affectionately known as "The Professor," Adam Solomon performs as a blues soloist as well as with his band Tikisa, creating a unique sound that combines traditional and modern coastal East African rhythms, fiesta, rumba, soukous, makossa and highlife music.  He has released three three albums, Safari, Mti Wa Maisha and Rocket Express II: African Renaissance Blues.  Adam Solomon is also a member of the Juno award-winning super group African Guitar Summit.

Death rockumentary hits T.O. August 16

Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was Death. Formed in the early 1970s by three teenage brothers from Detroit, Death is credited as being the first black punk band, and the Hackney brothers, David, Bobby, and Dannis, are now rightly considered pioneers. But it wasn’t until recently — when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of Bobby’s attic and was issued by the Drag City label nearly thirty years after Death’s heyday — that anyone outside a small group of punk enthusiasts had even heard of them. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family chronicle, the story of Death is one of brotherly love and fierce, divinely inspired expression. Giallo hommage Berberian Sound Studio opens @ TIFF Bell Lightbox Friday

Equal parts paranoid thriller and loving tribute to the disappearing art of analog sound recording, Peter Strickland's Berberian Sound Studio takes us on a nightmarish voyage behind the scenes of 1970s Italian giallo cinema. Summoned to an Italian studio to record the audio effects for a bloody horror opus, meek British sound engineer Gilderoy (Toby Jones) quickly finds his genteel disposition clashing with that of his alternately boisterous, genial and hostile Italian hosts. As Gilderoy becomes unhealthily submerged in his work, the simulated aural violence (snapping celery stalks standing in for cracking bones, pulverized watermelons for squishing craniums) starts to take on a cruel edge — and as tension in the claustrophobic studio mounts, it becomes clear that the film is corrupting Gilderoy's fragile psyche. A Kafkaesque meta-horror tale set in the lost annals of cinematic history, Berberian Sound Studio plunges us into the blurry meeting point between waking life and nightmares.
