Spiritualized lands at the Phoenix in May

After Spiritualized presents the songs from their forthcoming seventh studio album Sweet Heart Sweet Light (Fat Possum) to UK audiences in March, Jason Pierce should finally have everything mixed to his liking by the time they begin the North American leg of their tour. That would mean finished copies of the 10-track Sweet Heart Sweet Light – originally set for release on March 19 but just pushed back "several weeks" – could be available for sale before Spiritualized arrives in Toronto to light up The Phoenix on May 5. Well, fingers are crossed.
In any case, advance tickets for the Phoenix show will set you back $27 and are on sale Friday at Rotate This, Soundscapes and Ticketmaster. Here are the tour dates:

Gangrene: The Bio

The Alchemist and Oh No, respected and accomplished MCs and producers in their own right,
weren’t acquainted until they met at a show headlined by Dilated Peoples member and mutual
friend, Evidence. Inspired, Al contacted Oh No and proposed a collaborative project. From that
point they “just clicked”, says Oh No. “I sent him a verse and a beat, and he sent a beat and a
verse.” The creative sparring continued, and they began to refer to the work as Gangrene.

As the project began to flesh itself out organically over the course of these exchanges, each artists
relished the opportunity to best his cohort with the most profoundly disturbing, cut-throat
concoction he could muster, be it a threatening stanza or traumatic instrumental. The friendly
competition was spurred on by a deep-rooted mutual respect and admiration for each other’s
work, and the music began to reflect this as they exchanged sonic influence, ultimately
contributing to an aesthetic that resides at the corner of Crenshaw and Elm Street.

In the early 90s, The Alchemist was inspired by street level hip-hop at a young age, but his
surroundings differed starkly from those surrounding his favorite MCs. Seeing beyond the
glimmering façade of his Beverly Hills neighborhood, he sought mentors who would expose him
to a different reality. Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs kept him grounded under his tutelage, schooling
him on the use of the ASR-10 sampler. Muggs eventually began to pass on work to the young
producer/MC who landed his first beats on Mobb Deep’s Murda Muzik.

After visiting, Al felt more home in the cramped quarters of NYC and made the trans-continental leap of faith in order to better acquaint himself with the environment that had birthed hip-hop culture. His solo debut, 1st Infantry, was a veritable who’s-who of mean-mugging rhyme-spitters like The Lox, Mobb Deep, and The Game and it served as the red carpet that introduced Al as a formidable rhyme teller himself.

Meanwhile, in Oxnard, Stones Throw Records had just gotten off the ground, bolstered by the
success of their premier release, Lootpack’s Soundpieces: Da Antidote. Lootpack member and
Stones Throw exec Madlib had tapped his younger brother for a few verses, and the fledgling
rapper/beatmaker went by Oh No. His subsequent releases on the label, 2004’s The Disrupt and
2006’s Exodus into Unheard Rhythms, were later met with a great deal of acclaim. Oh No
cemented his status as one of the most forward thinking instrumentalists and lyricists making hiphop
with the release of Dr. No’s Oxperiment, a concept record that lifted samples strictly from
Middle Eastern and Mediterranean vinyl.

Three years after the creative mutagen was introduced, the Alchemist and Oh No stand upon a
seething heap of rugged de-compositions to be released as an album titled Gutter Water on
Decon. Together as Gangrene they present a dense canvas from which verses by guests Planet
Asia, Raekwon, Evidence, MED, Twins Gambino, Fashawn and Roc-C leap into action
alongside rhymes of their own. Oh No explains, “Our sounds are really raw, gritty. It just worked.”
Though both are life long students of the school of sampling, they’re approach to doing so
differed initially. Gradually breaking down analog recordings to there elements, Al and Oh have
since become a force of nature, accosting beautiful pieces of music, turning them inside out and
repackaging them into an ominous, pitch-colored void of thuggery.

Gangrene is a hood-certified existential demonstration of creative conceptualism; creating something by taking less from more, returning an organic creation to the soil, diamonds into coal.

I called my radio show The Unknown because I plan to tell you shit that's unknown to you. Originally, it was going to be an hour of my favourite songs. But after a conversation with Orin Isaacs, who’s producing the show, we came up with something a bit better. I realized there’s already one Ryan Seacrest. And he’s gorgeous. Why try to step on his toes? I’d rather step on my own toes.

What's behind Wilco's odd new Popeye video

It struck me as more than a bit strange when I read that King Features and dBpm Records had joined forces for the release of a new cartoon and animated music video for Wilco’s “Dawned On Me” featuring Popeye the Sailor Man. Upon discovering the clip had been directed by Darren Romanelli, everything started making a lot more sense.

You see, Romanelli isn't only the face of the Dr. Romanelli fashion line, he's also the custom marketing specialist behind Street Virus who conceived the animated collaboration between Wilco and King Features’ flagship character Popeye, first introduced in animated form by Fleischer Studios in 1933.

Romanelli's marketing team was initially hired by King Features to curate the resurrection and reintroduction of their Beetle Bailey comic strip character to contemporary consumers. What became known as the Dr. Romanelli: Camp Swampy project first appeared to the public in the form of Converse's Bosey model sneakers which look like army-style Chuck Taylors with Beetle Bailey graphics inside the shoe. Of course, the shoes and jackets with Beetle Bailey on the back were just the beginning. The clever bit was hitting on the Army Vs. Navy strategy as a way to reintroduce an even bigger King Features property, Popeye The Sailor Man.

The next phase came last September with the roll out of MediCom Toy's new Beetle Bailey and Popeye Bearbrick dolls. Then in October, the new Converse Popeye-style Chuck Taylors popped up alongside their Beetle Bailey shoes at Bloomingdales just in time for the holidays.

So the Wilco new video clip is essentially just latest phase of Romanelli's elaborate Camp Swampy campaign – a sneaky commercial for their King Features product lines designed to hit the 50+ target demographic: Wilco fans.

Jeff Tweedy and company have never been gung-ho about allowing their music to be used in advertising. Neither have they been keen on wasting loads of money on promotional videos – they haven't done one since 1999's I'm Always In Love off of Summerteeth and that was a straight rehearsal space performance clip – which makes this unusual venture with Romanelli's marketing team that much more intriguing. Now that they've completed and released the long-form commercial for Popeye, could there be Wilco brand canned spinach on grocery shelves next? Or perhaps a new series of collectible Wilco Bearbrick dolls? Stay tuned.

Here are two songs from the soundcheck for Guided By Voices' show at Hara Arena in the lovely Dayton suburb of Trotwood, Ohio on March 18, 1994. This was bassist Dan Toohey's last GBV show. Also, the dude in the maroon shirt (to the right of guitarist Mitch Mitchell) is future GBV guitarist, Nate Farley, who was the guitar tech that night. As it turns out, the tunes they played, Pimple Zoo and Gold Star For Robot Boy, were also the first two songs they performed that evening as you can see from the set list above.

"Wild music; crazy lyrics. Beautiful music; perfect lyrics. You get all this and more with these kinds of records. Strange sounding cheap early electronic keyboards like the Mellotron; out of control drum machines. Normal-sounding budget session musicians; drunk -- or something -- sounding session musicians. And singers who usually sound like they never saw the words to the song until the recording light was on. They probably recorded 50 of these "songs" in one day, sometimes using the same track more than once. It is this kind of set-up that can produce innocently beautiful works of art.

The ads in the back of magazines would say "Send us your poems or song lyrics and we'll get them recorded. Big money could be yours!," or some such come-on. What it turns out to be is that you pay them to put music to your words, then they send you a couple of copies of it on their label. And that's all they do. There are many of these companies, but the king of them all would have to be the MSR label of Hollywood, California -- now, sadly, defunct. Sometimes the song would be pressed on a 45, sometimes on an album collection, maybe with a picture of the house composer to help convince the customer that they're legit.

One day in 1971 I was looking at some albums in a surplus hardware store that had bought out a radio station's record library when I saw an album on MSR Records called Variety Songs For '69. It had a cheap stock cover with a big musical staff and song titles like "Richard Nixon," "More On Ode To Billy Jo," and "Beat Of The Traps," and the back cover was blank. It looked like something I'd better get.

I went home and played it, and by the time I got to the song called "Beat Of The Traps" I knew there was something wild going on here. Not every song was great (they can't all be gems), but the ones that were sounded like they'd reached outer space. Listen to the song "Beat Of The Traps" and you'll see what I mean. These guys must have been recording these songs all day and by the time they got to this cut all hell had broken loose. Everyone involved gives an amazing performance -- these lyrics really inspired them.

From then on, I would look out for these kinds of records and found that there are a lot of them out there. Rod Rogers also turns up on other labels, sometimes under the name Rodd Keith. I'd like to see a picture of him. Once while in Hollywood I called the MSR number, hoping to find out about Rod. A guy answered the phone and I asked him if he knew where Rod Rogers could be reached. He said, "You wouldn't want to go where he is." "What do you mean?," I asked. "He's pushin' up daisies, that's where he is." "Oh no, you mean he died?" "Yep. He was a keyboard genius," was his reply. And I agree. Listen to his perfect track for "Little Rug Bug." The words about a baby are great, too.

a few words about Shelby Earl's latest album from Ann Powers:

Dear music-loving pals,

  I  don't believe in journalistic objectivity. Still, I've always tried to  maintain a space between my music writing and my private life. Over the  years I've become friendly with a few musicians, and some of my old  friends have turned toward music-making. In general, though, I've clung  to that old idea that critical perspective and personal connection don't  mix.

  Until  now. I'm writing this note to ask you to listen to an album by a  friend. Shelby Earl is a singer-songwriter with a sharp pen and a  sumptuous voice, who took a while to fully uncover her own talent.  Before she made the brilliant music conveyed on her new release, "Burn  the Boats," she worked in various positions within the Pacific Northwest  arts community – including at Experience Music Project, where I got to  know her as a part of the programming team in the early 2000s.

  Shelby  was part of one of the intimate circles that make up the necklace of  strong women who stand behind – and at the forefront of – the Seattle  music scene. We got to know each other as colleagues and as women  finding our places in a frankly boyish scene. When I lived in Seattle in  the early 2000s, Shelby was starting to explore her own creative  possibilities as part of the duo the Hope. But she kept working regular  jobs. She was a practical person. Music wasn't a lifestyle for her; it  was a practice, a way into new internal spaces. Eventually, it became  her vocation, and she changed everything in her life to pursue it.

  Jump  to 2011. I'm living far from Seattle, but still connected. Shelby sent  me an email about her new solo album. Sure, I'll listen, I replied. No  promises, though. In fact, I have to admit, I thought I'd send polite  praise and move on.

  Instead,  I became enraptured. "Burn the Boats" is an album beyond trends, a  classic work of singer-songwriterly craft and beautifully framed  confession. It's a fully adult expression of lessons learned, loss  absorbed, and hope rebuilt, plank by plank. The title comes from  something her dad said about what she'd done: the expression means to  risk everything, abandon all past assumptions and easy outs, in pursuit  of something bigger. That urgency comes through in the album's ten  gorgeous songs.

  Shelby  is still young – in her early thirties – but she's not a bubbly  ingénue. She makes music for those of us who've been through a few  things. Produced by John Roderick and engineered by Eric Corson, both of  the beloved Barsuk Records band the Long Winters, and featuring a  stellar line-up of Seattle mainstays, "Burn the Boats" realizes Shelby's  compositions within arrangements that recall legendary genre-busters  like Patsy Cline as well as more contemporary artists like Jenny Lewis  and Brandi Carlile. Everybody wants to compare her to Neko Case, maybe  because of the Northwest connection, but if Neko is bourbon, Shelby is  honey wine. Sweeter at first taste, her music is subtly intoxicating.

  I  love "Burn the Boats" for its class, its open-heartedness and its  wisdom. I'm addicted to the perfect balance of comfort and challenge in  Shelby's voice. I don't want this record to get lost in the avalanche of  releases that confronts every critic and music fan. It's not  particularly hipsterish – one of its best songs, in fact, is "Under  Evergreen," a call for Pacific Northwest music insiders to transcend  their own assumptions of what's cool. But it's the kind of album that  many people in your life will love. Including, I hope, you yourself.

  Thanks  for listening to my friend and my new favorite singer-songwriter,  Shelby Earl. And yes, that's her real name. It's not her fault that it  looks so right on an album cover.

Village Music has been a cultural institution in Mill Valley, California for over five decades, but on September 30th, 2007 it closed its well-worn Dutch door for good. Often referred to as “the greatest record store in the world”, Village has been a repository for local musicians and record collectors as well as some of the biggest names in pop, rock, jazz, rhythm & blues. Director George Lucas researched the soundtrack for "American Graffiti" at the store and B.B. King, Ry Cooder, Cab Calloway, Jerry Garcia, and Elvis Costello are among the many stars that have hung out and shopped there over the years. One could always discover something new in this enclave of vintage vinyl and vast memorabilia – enough to rival any respectable American cultural museum.

What made Village Music so unique was its proprietor, John Goddard, a one-of-a-kind music historian and collector who bought the shop in 1968, after working there as a teenager. For countless musicians, John has been a tremendous resource, mentor and friend as well as a nexus for the entire musical community – reviving the careers of forgotten artists and staging some of the most unforgettable concert parties at the legendary Sweetwater saloon. But like so many other independents, Village and John fell victim to the economic shifts of the town and the music industry, unable to compete in the iPod era, the rise of the CD and changes in taste among young music buyers.

Village Music: Last of The Great Record Stores is a compelling music documentary that celebrates the life of an American musical institution and the tremendous impact it had on the famous (and not-so-famous) patrons who were part of itʼs unique history. The film includes candid interviews, rare archival performances, exclusive in-store appearances and all-star tribute concerts. With over thirty artists featured, the film interweaves Village Musicʼs vibrant past and rich musical community with the final six months of its existence – marking the true end of an era. In doing so, it also tells the larger story of the many changes the music business has undergone and the direction itʼs heading - a world where listeners download invisible music and the album is considered a dying art. Even though Village Music is now closed and the last of Goddardʼs rare vinyl and memorabilia is to be sold off, the film has preserved this extraordinary, one-of-a-kind chapter in music history for generations to come.

What? A cool Christmas album, completely free of the corny old standards we all know and loathe? Unlikely as it may seem, someone finally came up with a collection you can spin this holiday season at home or in your local club without embarrassment.
Yep, that's right, club DJ and record hound Jan Kohlmeyer pitched Tramp Records' supremo Tobias Kirmayer on the idea for precisely such a Christmas album last year. After auditioning over 50 rare funk, soul and jazz tracks, they knocked the pile down to the top 13 uncomped Xmas thrillers for the resulting Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party album – were talkin' primo groovers from classy belters such as Count Sidney, Lee Rogers, Rose Graham and Vernon Garrett.
For other labels, that would've been job done but not those Tramp hombres. In keeping with the spirit of the season, they decided to press up a special limited 500 copy vinyl edition and package it in a snazzy gatefold sleeve depicting scans of all the original 45s. Nice. For those without a turntable, there's also digital download and CD versions available. Here's a sampling...

The classic mid-’90s lineup of Guided By Voices has been back at work, and their new album Let’s Go Eat The Factory is planned for release by Fire Records early in 2012. I'll believe it when I see it but the promising bit is that a 4-song preview EP recently began to circulate with the obvious standout number being the title track Doughnut For A Snowman. Along with it, there's an intriguing 44-second musing called So High which cuts out just when it you'd expect to hear the chorus... naturally.

Sunparlour Players rock the Great Hall Dec. 10

To coincide with the release of their ambitious new Us Little Devils album, those snappy dressing Sunparlour Players – at the Great Hall in Toronto on Saturday (December 10) – have just released a video for the track Runner directed by Jared Raab known for his stylish Diamond Rings and Born Ruffians clips. Here's his technical breakdown of the shoot for those who care about such things...

"On the surface, the video is intended to captures some of the raw energy of the Sunparlour Players live show but we also wanted to do something that was technically interesting to shoot but could be pulled off on a small budget.

Working as always with the talented team at Vulture Culture Films we devised a concept to shoot a video was that uses no actual film lighting. Instead, the entire thing was lit by multiple video projectors, projecting textures onto the band. I collected hundreds of video textures including tree branches, leaves and grasses, which were then edited and projected onto the band as they played. The other thing that makes the video somewhat unique is that every single shot, except the last two are reflections in one or more mirrors. Working closely with cinematographer Peter Dreimanis, I set up a series of wonky mirrors at various angles around the band, which allowed us to get shots that would have otherwise been impossible. Working with mirrors is always a bit of a challenge, and I'm sure if you look closely at the video, there is more than one shot of the crew in there.

We shot very quickly over the course of one smokey and sweaty evening at The Sixth Gallery (1642 Queen Street West, Toronto). The Sixth is an unbelievably cool space, filled with all sorts of wonderful sculptures and home-made instruments by gallery owner and artist Iner Souster. The gritty, mechanical sculptures and eccentric wooden decor seemed a perfect compliment to the Sunparlour Players sound.

In the end, what we managed to get was a video that appears quite organic, despite it's technologically complicated origins. Most importantly though, it gives me great pleasure to say we quite literally made it with smoke and mirrors."

Just in time for the holiday season, the fine Northern Ontario music blog Sound Vat (soundvat.wordpress.com) is bringing attention to worthy under-the-radar Canuck acts by issuing a sweet 23-track collection of Christmas-themed tunes entitled If Jesus Had Been Canadian, He Would Have Needed More Than Swaddling Clothes. True enough.
For some reason – surely it couldn't be the lack of available material – two of the participating artists decided to do We Three Kings. Cold Specks signs with Arts & Crafts

Straight outta Etobicoke, promising 23-year-old singer/songwriter Al Spx aka Cold Specks burst onto the global stage recently with a head-turning appearance on the popular British television show Later... with Jools Holland which you can see below.

Full marks to Arts & Crafts who signed the London-based Spx (previously known as Basket of Figs and The Hotel Ghost) and announced the December 13 release of Cold Specks' debut single Holland b/w Old Stepstone well-timed to coincide her Toronto appearance at the Phoenix opening for St. Vincent on December 15.
Spx sites the field recordings of Alan Lomax and the churchy Memphis belthing of James Carr as key influences on her sound which she describes as "doom soul."
It all bodes well for her forthcoming full-length album currently being mixed with legendary acoustic engineering ace Jim Anderson (Ron Carter, McCoy Tyner, Branford Marsalis, John Zorn) with tracks reportedly produced by PJ Harvey sidekick Rob Ellis who worked wonders for Anna Calvi. Can't wait to hear what she does with the London Community Gospel Choir. I'm guessing you'll be reading much more about Cold Specks very soon. Dance of the Mystic by Nat Birchall

This year Nat Birchall celebrates 30 years of playing the saxophone. During that time he has been quietly working on his craft, slowly but surely progressing towards a style and concept that best communicates his view of the universe. Initially inspired by the great horn men of Jamaica, people like Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook and Cedric "Im" Brooks, Nat found his way into the music of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and the whole world of Jazz, before finding his own voice on his instrument. Along the way he has played in many different musical situations, playing Turkish Folk/Jazz with percussionist Okay Temiz, forming the ground-breaking “Corner Crew” which experimented with elements of jazz and hip hop, and the heavy Roots Reggae of Dubdadda. Nat’s quintet, The Sixth Sense made his debut CD of the same name in 1999. The album was well received and was one of Jazzwise magazine’s editor’s CDs of the year, earning a 4 star review. Unusually amongst UK musicians, Nat’s sound and concept has been favourably compared to John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd. Nat currently plays in Matthew Halsall’s adventurous groups, appearing on his Sending My Love album, as well as performing with Arun Ghosh’s Indo-jazz ensemble, Jon Thorne’s Oedipus Mingus and guitarist Gary Boyle’s quartet.

Although most of them won't be terribly exciting, the wonderful people at forfolkssake.com had the very good sense to invite Caitlin Rose to contribute a waltz-time corker which automatically makes their 12-track For Folk's Sake It's Christmas 2011 CD way above the seasonal expectations.
