What was Funkadelic doing in Toronto?

That's the first question many people ask upon discovering that Funkadelic's fourth release America Eats It's Young was largely recorded in Toronto by George Clinton and company while residing in the Big Smoke. Yes, after the 1971 release of Maggot Brain, Clinton and much of his P-Funk posse moved the base of their operations from Detroit to Toronto which would have a significant impact on the sprawling double album America Eats It's Young and alter their consciousness in strange and unexpected ways. You have to wonder what would inspire songs like Miss Lucifer's Love and A Joyful Process.

Toronto journalist and DJ David Dacks explores what the members of Funkadelic were up to 40 years ago while residing in Toronto The Good in his new audio documentary Funk Getting Ready To Roll, featuring interviews with George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, Frank "Kash{ Waddy, Cordell "Boogie" Mosson, Prakash John and others. Funk Getting Ready To Roll will air on CBC Radio 2 as part of Inside The Music on Sunday, August 12 at 3 pm (EST)  and again on CBC Radio 1 at 9 pm (EST). Check out the teaser clip below.

Incidentally, selecta David Dacks will be spinning as part of the Ghostlight and Eucalyptus double bill at Magpie (831 Dundas St. West) on Wednesday (July 25) starting at 9 pm.

Here's the Funk Getting Ready To Roll teaser clip:

Meet Chattanooga's badass Bohannons

The Bohannons (although often called the Brohannons by their pals) inhabit a musical universe that, while certainly drawing influence from all over, is firmly rooted in their Tennessee home. With Unaka Rising, they are clearly taking their homegrown, handcrafted rock to a new level, and we think they’ve set the bar pretty damn high with this one.

The album’s title references the Unaka province of East Tennessee and western North Carolina — “One of the finest areas in all the world,” insists singer/guitarist Marty Bohannon. The region has certainly fueled the Bohannon’s fire, providing endless stories and situations from which these songs draw.

With a quiver of new material ready to follow up 2011’s stellar Days of Echo EP, the Bohannons spent the better part of the last year tearing up the road between Chattanooga and Athens, GA where they recorded Unaka Rising at Chase Park Transduction, first with David Barbe and later Drew Vandenberg. Have a listen...

Naomi Shelton shakes Harbourfront Saturday

Although Naomi Shelton, like many of her gospel singing contemporaries, grew up singing in church, the Albama-raised belter has also spent some time in New York's soul clubs. Her her late 90s sevens on the Desco label – namely 41st St. Breakdown and Wind Your Clock – were essentially the blueprint for Sharon Jones' recordings with the Dap-kings that would follow.

When Desco folded, the label's founders split up and started Soul Fire and Daptone. Shelton joined Gabriel Roth at Daptone who produced her next single, 2002's Promised Land and then eventually re-released Wind Your Clock b/w Talkin' About A Good Thing in 2009 to coincide with Shelton's long overdue debut album What Have You Done, My Brother? backed by the Gospel Queens.

Gallon Drunk comes roaring back

Older and wiser perhaps, but Gallon Drunk are no less menacing. Following the tragic illness and death of their bassist Simon Wring, the bruising Brit thug rockers have resurfaced as a three-piece with the intense new single A Thousand Years (available via iTunes) and suitably unsettling video (see below). Taken together with the previous single You Made Me – issued in the UK a few months back – it certainly bodes well for Gallon Drunk's forthcoming album The Road Gets Darker From Here now set for release on September 11 after initially being slated for August 14th.

Have a look at the press release:

Recorded at Clouds Hills Recordings in Hamburg during the summer of 2011, produced by Johann Scheerer (Faust/Robots In Disguise), Gallon Drunk bring the considerable power of their renowned live performances to the new album The Road Gets Darker From Here which will be available on heavyweight vinyl, CD and download.

Featuring founding frontman and former member of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds wrecking crew James Johnston (vocals, organ, guitar, harmonica, piano, and bass), Terry Edwards (bass, saxophone and percussion) and Ian White (drums, percussion), the trio have refocused their utterly distinctive musical vision with a collection of impassioned songs, imbued with pure mania, despair and abandonment.

At the state of the art analogue recording studio, Scheerer recorded the band playing the songs live, direct to two-inch tape. This gave a warmth, richness and depth of sound to the recording. Coupled with the band members’ own recent experiences, playing and recording with the likes of Lydia Lunch’s Big Sexy Noise, Faust, Nick Cave, Tom Waits and The Tindersticks, this brought an open minded freshness to the sessions.

From the insistent, slide guitar driven ‘A Thousand Years’, through the exhilaratingly sleazy, deranged rock ‘n’ roll of ‘You Made Me’ (the first single to be released from the album, in the UK and Europe only), the menacing melancholia of ‘Stuck In My Head’ (featuring French singer Marion Andrau of Underground Railroad), to the desperate eruption of guitar fury of ‘Hanging On’, this is classic, unfettered Gallon Drunk. Also including the fever dream boogie of ‘The Big Breakdown’, before the final haunting, enigmatic psychodrama ‘The Perfect Dancer’ - a miasma of hallucinatory guitars, Hammond organs and slinky voodoo drums - the album is an utterly captivating experience.

Midweek Mixdown: The Dirty Nil

To go along with The Dirty Nil's release of the entertaining Karl DiPelino & David Dunham shot video clip for Fuckin' Up Young (below), no-count Hamiltonian hellraisers Luke, Dave and Kyle made some time in their busy schedule of "drinking, playing shows, shooting guns, blowing shit up, breaking limbs, skating, fireworks, drinking, eating french fries, forgetting things, watching movies, fighting each other, going to shows, and drinking" to assemble a four-song Summer Mixtape (including Fuckin' Up Young) to tide you over until their next single comes out September 25th. And yeah, it rocks righteously so you should grab the thing quick because they've temporarily made it available for free right here. On behalf of The Dirty Nil, you're welcome.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo @ Harbourfront Friday!

On Friday night, Benin's badass Afro-funk ensemble Tout-Puissant Orchestre de Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou will be making their long awaited Toronto debut at Harbourfront some 43 years after forming. No less amazing than the fact that the legendary T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo are flying over from West Africa to play a 90-minute show in Toronto with no cover charge is that what promises to be the concert event of the summer is being largely overlooked by local radio, television, print and online media.

Of course, there's a lot going on that same night with J.C. Brooks and the Uptown Sound at the Horseshoe, Iron Maiden joining Alice Cooper for an oldies night at Molson Amp, Diplo getting busy with Skrillex and Grimes at Fort York and don't forget Conor Maynard,  aka the Brit Bieber, will be crooning covers for screaming teens at the Mod Club.

In any case, to get you up to speed for Friday night's Poly Rythmo blast, here's a fantastic hour-long mix of Poly-Rhythmo's classic 70s jams put together for the always on-point Paris DJs site by collector ZjAk and his pal WaaterproOf aptly named 100% Poly-Rythmo.

Tom Waits howls Chicago on Letterman

After a brief discussion of 19th century rat trap technology with David Letterman, Tom Waits and crew – featuring son Casey on drums and David Hidalgo on guitar – tore into a rollicking rendition of Chicago off Bad As Me as you can see below. I'm looking forward to seeing what he's got for an encore on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday evening.

Pandemonium (re)opening party tonight

The Junction's venerable record shop Pandemonium has moved to a much bigger location at 2920 Dundas West. Sliding over just 29 storefronts away from the previous location might not seem like a huge deal but with 2800 sq. ft of floor space, the new locale is a world away from the overstuffed old joint.

The added elbow room around the bins will be a welcome change but the even bigger plus for record hounds is that owner Neil Cunningham can finally display the many desirable vinyl artifacts that he's rumoured to have been sitting on – and perhaps even sell a few of them!

To celebrate the opening of the new Pandemonium, there's a party on Saturday (July 7) which will give you a chance to browse the stock and check out their snazzy sound system. Yes, they now have one of those too.

Señor Vishal's tropical treat @ Turning Point

Recently having returned from another vinyl scrounging adventure in a land far away, Señor Vishal promises to rock A Man Called Warwick's popular Turning Point party tonight at The Garrison (1197 Dundas West) with a bangin' selection of rarely heard Afro-Caribbean joints which seems perfectly suited to the sweltering heat we've been experiencing here in Toronto. To get you up to island speed for this evening's tropical dancefloor session, here's a typically dope Señor Vishal mix for your listening pleasure. Doors open at 9 pm.

Nicolay & Hot At Nights @ Trane tonight

Perhaps best known for his ongoing Foreign Exchange collabo with Little Brother MC Phonte, Dutch producer Nicolay will be making his Toronto live performance debut with the Hot At Nights jazz trio playing two shows at the Trane Studio (964 Bathurst) tonight slated for 7 pm and 9 pm.

Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist Nicolay first threw down with the Raleigh, NC combo – led by 8-string guitar virtuoso Chris Boerner (who plays on Foreign Exchange sessions) with Matt Douglas on sax/woodwinds and Nick Baglio on drums – on the recently released Shibuya Session EP which is essentially a jazz-style overhaul of eight instrumental compositions from Nicolay's 2009 album City Lights Vol. 2: Shibuya. You can check out tracks from the Shibuya Session EP right here.

Tor each of the two shows at Trane Studio, Hot At Nights will open with a short set focusing on the music from their Nice Talk debut album after which they'll be joined by Nicolay on keyboards and synths to explore the Shibuya Session material and perhaps delve into a couple of classics from Nicolay's growing back catalog. Here's what you can expect...

Something completely different from Mike Watt

If you haven't already heard, the always busy Mike Watt has an experimental new side-project called The Hand To Man Band with Deerhoof's John Dieterich, Tim Barnes of Silver Jews and noted avant pianist Thollem  McDonas which doesn't sound anything like fIREHOSE.

Their song The Down Moveables will give you an idea of where they're coming from although you may be distracted by the arresting visuals created by Marcos Sanchez for the video clip (below).

If you'd like to hear more by The Hand To Man Band, their tune First Shallows appears on the Post-Consumer Label Sampler 2012 which you can check out right here.
