John Doe's "lateral move in mid-management"

John Doe's latest album Keeper (Yep Roc) is the warm 'n' fuzzy flipside of 2007's bleak 'n' brooding A Year in the Wilderness. While Keeper has a much more optimistic vibe, that doesn't mean the X mainman suddenly wants to fill the world with silly love songs.– he'd settle for a few meaningful ones with deep resonance however. With the studio assistance of his longtime producer/engineer Dave Way (ironically known for mixing huge-selling hits for Christina Aguilera, Pink, Spice Girls, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, etc)  and guest collaborators Patty Griffin, Smokey Hormel, Steve Berlin, Cindy Wasserman and Jill Sobule, it sounds like JD got what he was after on the new recording. That could be why he decided to call it Keeper instead of Tosser.
This past week, our man was out hawking the new disc which unfortunately involves enduring painful interviews with clueless radio personalities curious about how John Doe got his name. On the upside, he also got to play a few songs from Keeper for Portland's KINK-FM who had the foresight to shoot and the good sense to post. Who knew his song Never Enough was inspired as much by reality TV shows Hoarders and Storage Wars as Snoop Dogg's Gin & Juice?

A guided tour of Detroit

You can't talk about electronic music without mentioning Detroit. So Resident Advisor and Bench went to the city which birthed the genre we now call techno for the current edition of Real Scenes below.

"Detroit has always had a creative streak, due in large part to the boom and subsequent bust of the auto industry. Quite simply, Detroit is a city of extremes, and its music reflects that. These days, Detroit's importance in the global electronic music scene is often referred to in the past tense.
"When we visited the city, though, we found a number of artists with their eyes (and ears) firmly set towards the future. After our time in the Motor City, it's clear to us that Detroit will endure and innovate for years to come."  Resident Advisor

One For The Weekend: PS I Love You + Diamond Rings

"I was on the road with the bands mostly for fun but also to document the tour any way I knew how. Most nights, PS I Love You would end their set by inviting Diamond Rings to the stage to play their single "Leftovers." With no clear plan in mind, I started to tape their performances of the single. Halfway through the tour when we found ourselves with a day off, we decided it might be fun to develop a music video for the song while still on the road. Driving from Austin, TX to Tuscon, AZ, we stopped over in a small town called Marfa, TX (pop. 2000) and rented a trailer for the night. Using the song's title as a cue, Paul (of PS I Love You) cooked up an amazing meal for all of us in the small confines of our mobile home, and of course, there were plenty of leftovers."  Colin Medley

My Morning Jacket's Siamese Soul swipe

The first time I heard My Morning Jacket's latest album Circuital, the song Holdin' On To Black Metal immediately stood out for some reason. It definitely didn't sound like a typical wineskin jam from the Bonnaroo bad boys and then it hit me – it's actually a sneaky re-write of Kwan Jai & Jit Sriprajan's E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai (Advice Column for Love Troubles, Part 1)  copped off of the Sublime Frequencies Thai funk archival collection Siamese Soul: Thai Pop Spectacular Vol. 2, 1960s-1980s. When played back to back, it shouldn't be too difficult to spot the striking similarities.
