RIP Amy Winehouse, 1983 - 2011

MIA - "27"
said your all mouth and no brains
all rock stars go to heaven
you said you'll be dead at 27 seven
when we drunk in a English tavern
the owner poured you the Bourbon
and you drunk your self so rotten
so he got so rich he bought a Bentley
and moved himself to Devon
you started dirty dancing
and you bar tended a dozen
i took you to the clinic
to get you clean but you couldn't
said in 2 days ur 27 and and ur destiny was comin
so ur papa passed so sudden
and left you with lil somin
you blew that money on a mountain of drugs
and staged your self a bed in
a month later when i popped in
your still high but the winter set in
i bought you a coffee and a muffin
and you quoted me some Lenin
i wished i was that clever
but thats what kept me coming
your friendship did mean somin
but you left me for nothin
when i left, you befriended a rope
and i saw you both were hanging.

Black Milk discusses his Jack White collabo

"It’s a pretty crazy feeling when you’re going about your regular, every day routine in the studio and all of sudden you get a phone call that Jack White wants to work with you. The email to my manager came from Jack White himself. My first reaction was one of shock that an artist like him, who most people would categorize as a rock star, would want to work with an independent hip-hop artist. My second reaction was surprise that he even knew I existed, even though we’re from the same city. Of course, my response was “Hell yeah! When and where do I need to be to make this happen?” A few back and forth emails led to my band (keyboardist AB, drummer Daru Jones and bassist Malik Hunter) and I taking a trip to Nashville to record at Jack’s home studio.
"Upon our arrival, Jack was the first person to greet us. From our brief discussion about music and things of that nature, I learned he discovered my music through the “Deadly Medley” music video. Jack, a team of his musicians, my band and I wasted no time starting a jam session. I immediately felt the pressure of having to create two great songs in two days. Not only were we able to produce two tracks that we felt were great, but we were able to capture our individual sounds. I was prepared to follow Jack’s direction with the songs, but not long into the creative process it became clear that he wanted me to take the lead role as the producer. For a guy who is so well-respected and musically accomplished to humbly step into the recording room as one of many musicians and to trust me as the producer to do what I do best was pretty crazy and such an honor.
Royal Mega
"The jam sessions were recorded to tape, all on the first day. On the second day, I chose two of them to write to and spit my verses back to back. No “edit, undo” like recording digitally in Pro-Tools. On the third and final day, we toured Third Man Records (the most amazing place ever), shot photos for the project cover and sound checked for our show later that night. It was a great performance for an amazing crowd, but the craziest part of the night was seeing (and hearing) Jack White in the crowd, cheering us on like a fan and seeming to have more fun than everyone. As a bonus, the live show was recorded to tape (Black Milk Live at Third Man Records), and will be released on vinyl.
Brain
"The time we spent in Nashville collaborating with Jack White was one of the greatest moments in my music career. It not only inspired me to continue to work hard as a producer, but also confirmed that staying true to my art, without compromise, can manifest into the type of rewards that money can’t buy."

Catherine MacLellan takes over family business

The new Silhouette album from Catherine MacLellan sounds like her best work yet which is quite an achievement for the PEI singer/songwriter considering her impressive back catalogue of critically acclaimed albums.
Don't believe it? Wait till you hear MacLellan sweetly honour her late father Gene MacLellan by taking back possession of his oft-covered Canuck classic Snowbird. With a harmony assist from Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy,  Catherine's soulful reading reveals the song's aching essence in a way that will make you forget that Anne Murray ever sang it. Props to producer David Baxter for his tasteful touch in keeping things simple and letting McLellan's gorgeous voice take over.
These recently released clips (below) for three tunes from Silhouette should give you a good idea of why MacLellan is among the most promising talents to arise from the Great White North in ages – everything she does looks so darn effortless. Heck, I've seen her bring down the house with a song she prefaced with an admission that it was written on the way to the gig. If she's playing a show anywhere near you on her current tour,  don't dare miss it.

Coffey's on at the Horseshoe Friday

Unless you happened to be watching Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night and saw Dennis Coffey knocking out nasty guitar licks with the Roots, the well-dressed bearded bloke could easily be mistaken for a real estate agent or financial advisor. However, if you've heard the Temptations' Ball Of Confusion, Cloud Nine or Edwin Starr's War, you're already familiar with the scorching wah-wah work that is Coffey's signature guitar sound. Part of Motown's superb studio crew known as the "Funk Brothers," Coffey was the first-call guitarist in the late 60s whenever one of Berry Gordy Jr.'s recording projects needed a heavy guitar boost.
Beyond Coffey's psychedelicized sessions for the Temptations, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes and Edwin Starr, the go-to guitar great can also be heard on unforgettable tracks like Freda Payne's Band Of Gold, The Spinners' It's A Shame, Chairman of the Board's Give Me Just A Little More Time, Johnny Taylor's Who's Makin' Love, Honey Cone's Want Ads, The Sylvers' Boogie Fever, CJ & Co's Devil's Gun, Darrell Banks' Open The Door To Your Heart, J.J. Barnes' Real Humdinger, Little Carl Carlton's Competition Ain't Nothin' and many others. That's not even counting the amazing instrumental joints he cut under his own name like the million-selling breakbeat stunner Scorpio, the hard-hustlin' soundtrack to Black Belt Jones and the super dope Hair and Thangs album. Check out the podcast Constellations – The A To Z of Dennis Coffey below put together by Detroit's DJ House Shoes.
Coffey's new self-titled studio album which the UK-based Strut label released at the end of April picks up where he left off with 1969's Hair And Thangs, updating a well-chosen selection of Detroit productions past  with an impressive cast of guest collaborators.
Fanny Franklin from Cali-funk combo Orgone sweetly overhauls Wilson Pickett’s psych-soul gem Don’t Knock My Love and no doubt even Steve Mancha would approve of the way Lisa Kekaula of The Bellrays belts out 100 Proof Aged In Soul's house-wrecker Somebody’s Been Sleeping In My Bed. Coffey's fellow D-Towners Mick Collins (of the Dirtbombs) and the Detroit Cobras’ Rachel Nagy show up for darkly demented swing at Funkadelic’s I Bet You and the largely overlooked Rodriguez number Only Good For Conversation is competently handled by Scots upstart Paolo Nutini. Even Stones Throw's resident crooner Mayer Hawthowrne doesn't do too badly with Parliament's All Your Goodies Are Gone.
What impressed me most were the surprisingly solid new compositions like Miss Millie built around a pounding groove laid down by Milwaukee's Kings Go Forth and the mighty instrumentals which recall Coffey's work with the Detroit Guitar Band, namely the opener 7th Galaxy,  Knockabout and the cosmically twerked Space Traveller.
There's no telling who might be joining Coffey on stage for his Toronto return slated for the Horseshoe on Friday (July 8) but it's sure to be a memorable event. Tickets are $22.50 advance or $25 at the door but you can win one of two free pairs we're giving away if you're among the first to tell us Coffey's astrological sign. Email your answer on the double to the theperlichpost@gmail..com with "Dennis Coffey Contest" in the subject line. Only the winners will be notified.
NOTE: Winners must be 19 or over and present valid ID when picking up their tickets in person at the Horseshoe on Friday.

When the promotion-savvy folks at Strut come up with the concept of putting together a Dennis Coffey retrospective refresher to show off his considerable contributions to the world of soul, funk, and hip-hop as a prelude to his impressive comeback album, they wisely went to Detroit's House Shoes. Sometimes called "Detroit's musical ambassador," House Shoes is not only well aware of Coffey's extensive back catalogue and how it has been used by hip hop producers,  he also happens to be a better than average mix DJ. On the resulting Constellations - The A to Z of Dennis Coffey, House Shoes covers all the bases, moving from the psychedelic b-boy soul of Coffey's 70's solo material, to the classic recordings he played on as a session ace, the joints sampled for hip-hop tracks, and he even snuck in a couple of pieces (*) from the new album which fit in seamlessly alongside with his old school faves.
