Juno Awards recognize metal... 40 years late!

This is going to sound like a gag but earlier today, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced on it's site that for the first time ever, a category for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year would be added to the 2012 Juno Awards!

Yes, believe it or don't, some 40 years after the term "heavy metal" was by first used to describe a style of music by Metal Mike Saunders, the CARAS brain trust has finally decided the time has come to officially recognize the popular form of music. In their shocking press release (which you can download here),  CARAS spelled out that the new Juno category will encompass not just the lame brand of hair metal that gets played on commercial radio but "metalcore, hardcore, heavy rock, thrash metal, death metal and their respective sub-genres including (but not limited to) nu-metal, power metal, grindcore, extreme metal, industrial metal, viking metal, folk metal, doom metal, gothic metal, speed metal, and sludge metal."Astounding.

Eligibility for the 2012 Juno Awards applies to works released during the period between September 1, 2010 to November 10, 2011. For a complete list of Juno Awards categories, eligibility rules, voting criteria and submission forms, go to www.junoawards.ca.
