It's Caribana weekend... apparently
When the world was beating a path to Canada for Expo 67 in Montreal, Toronto chose Canada's centennial summer to toast Caribbean culture with a colourful parade that grew into the annual Caribana Festival which attracts more than a million people each year.
Once again, it's Caribana weekend here in the Big Smoke, although you'd never know it from the clueless music coverage offered by many Toronto mainstream media outlets.
For some reason, the Globe and Mail decided that the Saturday kick-off of the city's enormous Caribbean celebration would be the perfect time for a full-page stroke piece on Montreal's Arcade Fire despite the fact that their Centre Island show is still two weeks off on August 14.... and that they're, well, an indie-rock band.
Not to be outdone in the contest to find the least relevant musical act to cover this weekend, the people with their fingers on the pulse at the Toronto Star countered with a no less oddly timed puff piece on the Jonas Brothers whose two-day stand at the Molson Amphitheatre is a month away on September 2 and 3. Meanwhile, the trend-conscious hipsters at eye weekly figured this was exactly the right week for that cover story on thrash metal geezers Slayer they'd been itching to run. Amazing!
For those looking for a more topically tropical soundtrack to the Caribana festivities, rocksteady icons The Melodians – who were singing the praises of Expo 67 back in the day (see below) – will be joining reggae star Frankie Paul at Harbourfront Centre's Sirius Stage for a free double bill on Sunday (August 1) starting at 8 pm.
Anyone hanging around in town to recover should check out Brazilian soul sender Seu Jorge with his awesome Almaz crew at the Phoenix on Monday (August 2).
